Default Is it too late to get in on this?

I'd like to attend. Is it too late to get my bard entered?

Ahhh, twas glorious indeed. Many excelent bards, many excelent songs and everyone was awarded well for their efforts.

Thanks much to Music Man and the kind soul who donated the prize Gabriazar won, I am exteemly pleased with it.

Big thanks also to my posse and my sexy dance team, and my volunteer streaker.

All the other bards were equaly excelent, some great songs, I especialy liked D&D Dance.

For those curious, here is the song Gabby sang... Eye of the Khyber

Rising up - back in the quest
Got my sword - got my armor
Killed by kobolds, now I’m back on my feet
Just a bard and his will to survive!
So many spells, it happened too fast,
    You wanted treasure and glory
Don’t kill the prophets on your way to the end
It’s so hard to keep them alive!

It’s the Eye of the Khyber
It’s the quest of the night.
Sneaking past all our dreaded kobold rivals.
    And the last kobold prophet
I will just have to kite
If I want the gem that they call...
    Eye of the Khyber

Face to snout - down in the dark
    Looking tough - acting sneaky
So many kobolds are now following me
If they catch me I will have to revive!

It’s the Eye of the Khyber
It’s the quest of the night,
Sneaking past all our dreaded kobold rivals.
    And the last kobold prophet
I will just have to kite
If I want the gem that they call…
    Eye of the Khyber

This is it – I’m at the end
Had the guts, got the glory
Took that gem, but I’m not gonna stop
I will not let any kobolds survive!

It’s the Eye of the Khyber
It’s the quest of the night,
Sneaking past all our dreaded kobold rivals.
    And the last kobold prophet
I will just have to kite
If I want the gem that they call...
    Eye of the Khyber!!!!

    Talking

It was fun. I hope to see more non-hack-and-slash activities for all classes. This is the song that won 3rd "Free to play Warforged":

There are those who think that warforged are only taking chances,
A host of unholy horrors to direct our half-strength cures.

    Our planet’s playthings,
    We fight on the strings
    with powers we cannot conceive
    The stars aren't aligned
    Or the gods are malign
Blame is better to give than receive.

You can choose the human race with their celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
    You can choose from darkened drow and kindness of the dwarves;
    I will choose a path I feel-
    I will choose warforged.

There are those who think that we were dealt a losing hand,
The cards are stacked against us- we weren't born in Lotus-Land.

    All preordained-
    A prisoner in chains-
    A victim of venomous fate.
    Kicked in the face,
You can't pray for a place
    In heaven's unearthly estate.

You can choose the human race, with their celestrial voice
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
    You can choose from darkened drow and kindness of the dwarves;
    I will choose a path I feel-
    I will choose warforged.

    Each of us-
    No cells for awareness-
    We’re imperfect and incomplete.
    No Genetics.
    Our uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt that's far too fleet.

You can choose the human race, with their celestial voice
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
    You can choose from darkened drow and kindness of the dwarves;
    I will choose a path I feel-
    I will choose warforged.

    Default Comments / Evaluation

Its been a few days & I've got my thoughts about the event all sorted out pretty much. Thanks for everyone who came to perform, watch, cheer, & otherwise support any of the competitors -- your help is appreciated.

First off, really fun -- the bards were really entertaining either in their songs or in their performances. It was great & I hope more of you make it again next time. At the bottom I have screen shots of each of the bards performing.

    For next time:
I think I would find a different location, possibly inside the main house of House P (which would be House P... does that sound redundant to you too?).

And the major change is the voting system, the way it was for this event was essentially a popularity contest which is what most battle of the bands really are, but I would like to see something more fair for next time. Due to a lack of judges I gave anyone there from the start voting privileges, which I think is still a good idea & will stay -- signing up to judge in advance will still help out a lot though. In order to eliminate the unfairness of a single vote contest I will make the next contest a point system. Everyone who is judging will send me a /tell detailing their choce for 1st,2nd, & 3rd. For each /tell i recieve for 1st place the bard recieves 3 points, 2nd gets 2 points, and 3rd gets 1 point. I then tally the total points for each bard & the three with the highest points get 1st, 2nd, 3rd places respectively. This will allow a much more diplomatic & honest competition.

Another comment I recieved was how we could make the competition more performance orientated -- I've beat this idea around a bit but can't come up with much... if anyone has any suggestions please share them either by reply or PM. thanks.

Well that is about all I have to comment on for now.

actually next battle is in planning, trying to find a date & get more loot... though i might not be able to find enough valuable loot, so the bards might just have to settle for bragging rights & top-of-the-line-everyday-loot.

could do just a flat out cash pot? I held an event on EQ once where everyone who wanted to enter put in like 100pp, and the winner took the prize at the end.

But if you dont wanna go that route of the contestants having to offer up money - and i could understand why - could always just see if you can find 'sponsors' to donate $$ for winners of the events?
    Thank you all!

Information for BoTB #3 Has been updated!!

Note the changes to judging & also performing. Also, be on the look out for Musicman's Treasure Horde in the Thelanis Market, so you can get a sneak peak at the prizes (this thread hasn't been made yet -- I must inventory my junk first.)

If you do not know about the Alias Function I recommend you learn it & create a series of alias strings for your song --> It will greatly increase your ability to rock as you perform (by which i mean perform odd stage antics like flips, spells, costume changes, & the like).

    Default Event Sponsor

Prince Toni would like to be a sponsor of the event. Let me know what would be good/appropriate loot, and I'll go hunting for the event.

Who knows maybe I already have something.

    http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=119873

PM me Musicman, and let me know if you'd like some assistance.

Prince Elvis would also like to judge if possible. Although Elvis was king, this Elvis is only a prince.

Default An Example of Describing the Music and of Color Coding your Lyrics

This post is to serve as an example of how to describe the Music of your song for the Battle of the Bards contest.
The song I am using as an example is "Snow (Hey Oh)" performed by the Red Hot Chili Peppers... if you are not familiar with the song, I recommend listening to it here, so you can better understand what I am describing.

As you read these lyrics notice a few things about how I have prepared the song.

First you'll notice the use of the emote function (/e) to describe a bit about how the song sounds before the lyrics begin (in most songs you here music before words). Later description of the song, marked by **, does not happen through emote (it would be weird to see these sentences pre-empted by Musicman, so instead they are delivered via /say -- which is a bit less odd)

Next notice, the use of the color code function. In game the code used in the example appears as a (red-green color of some sort --I forgot which I'll update this soon). Both the Red & Green values have been set to full (AA & AA) but there is no Blue (00).

You can also see how I've used " / " to divide the lyrics and give a sense of how they are delivered vocally, in addition to this you can see the groups I have broken the words into, which keeps like lyrics and themes together.

    ____________

Red Hot Chili Peppers: Snow (Hey Yo)

/e begins with a harmonious riff, accentuated by hammer-ons and pull-offs. He adds a soft drum beat by stomping his foot upon the wooden stage.

<rgb=#AAAA00> Come to decide that the things that I tried
were in my life just to get high on /

<rgb=#AAAA00> When I sit alone come get a little known,
But I need more than myself this time /

<rgb=#AAAA00> Step from the road to the sea to the sky /
And I do believe that we rely on

<rgb=#AAAA00> When I lay it on / Come get to play it on /
    All my life to sacrifice

    <rgb=#AAAA00> Hey oh -- listen what I say-oh /
I got your Hey oh /
    Listen what I say-oh

<rgb=#AAAA00> When will I know that I really can't go
to the well once more time to decide on /

    <rgb=#AAAA00> When it's killing me / When will I really see /
All that I need to look inside

<rgb=#AAAA00> Come to believe that I better not leave before I get my chance to ride /

    <rgb=#AAAA00> When it's killing me / What do I really need /
All that I need to look inside

    <rgb=#AAAA00> Hey oh listen what I say-oh /
Come back and Hey oh /
    look at what I say-oh /

/e drops “drum beat” and continues the riff into a falling rhythm.

<rgb=#AAAA00> The more I see the less I know /
The more I like to let it go... /
Hey oh -- whoa oh oh

/e kicks up the beat again with a soft passion.

<rgb=#AAAA00> Deep beneath the cover of another perfect wonder /
Where it's all white as snow /
Privately divided by a world so undecided /
    And there's nowhere to go

<rgb=#AAAA00> In between the cover of another perfect wonder /
And it's all white as snow /
Running through a field where all my tracks will /
Be concealed and there is nowhere to go

/e eases the rhythm back to the tempest of the hammer-ons & pull-offs.

<rgb=#AAAA00> When to descend to amend for a friend /
All the channels that have broken down

<rgb=#AAAA00> Now you bring it up / I'm gonna ring it up /
Just to hear you sing it out

<rgb=#AAAA00> Step from the road to the sea to the sky /
And I do believe that we rely on

<rgb=#AAAA00> When I lay it on / Come get to play it on /
    All my life to sacrifice

<rgb=#AAAA00> Hey oh listen what I say oh /
I got your Hey oh /
    Listen what I say oh

** The stomping subsides once more to let the song carry on the melody of the lute and vocals.

<rgb=#AAAA00> The more I see the less I know /
The more I like to let it go... /
    Hey oh whoa-oh-oh

/e brings back the driving force of the beat and propels the tune into a new dimension.

<rgb=#AAAA00> Deep beneath the cover of another perfect wonder /
Where it's all white as snow /
Privately divided by a world so undecided /
    And there's nowhere to go

<rgb=#AAAA00> In between the cover of another perfect wonder /
Where it's all white as snow /
Running through the field where all my tracks will /
Be concealed and there is nowhere to go

** Through the magic of song, Musicman steps up the fervor, and a smooth echo takes over the open air, creating overtones and harmonies with the vocals.

    <rgb=#AAAA00> I said hey yeah /
    Oh yeah /
    Tell my love now

    <rgb=#AAAA00> Hey yeah /
    Oh yeah /
    Tell my love now /

<rgb=#AAAA00> Deep beneath the cover of another perfect wonder /
Where it's all white as snow /
Privately divided by a world so undecided /
    And there's nowhere to go

<rgb=#AAAA00> Deep beneath the cover of another perfect wonder /
Where it's all white as snow /
Running through the field where all my tracks will /
Be concealed and there's nowhere to go

<rgb=#AAAA00> I said hey oh yeah / Oh yeah /
    Tell my love now

    <rgb=#AAAA00> Hey yeah /
    Oh yeah
