Default Update 45: 64-bit Client Beta Information

NOTE: The 64-bit client beta IS NOT YET AVAILABLE. It'll be available tomorrow when the worlds reopen after the update.

This information is in the Release Notes, but I wanted to specifically call it out here as well to help people switch over if they'd like:

The DDO game client can now be optionally run in 64-bit, which can improve game performance. By default, players will continue to run the 32-bit client unless they change the option in the launcher. This selection can be changed again if desired. A separate set of client preferences (userpreferences.ini) for the 64 bit client will be created to allow players to have different graphics settings for the different clients if desired. Players can select the 64-bit client, or switch back to the 32-bit client, by pressing the Options tab in the game launcher, then finding the selector in the General tab.

Cool. Looking forward to trying it out!

Will this new client incorporate UI scaling, by any chance?

Outstanding, I really didn't expect this to coming into play as soon as it has - will definitely be trialling this option.

No, sorry. That is a whole other pile of work.

    Default Outstanding!

Really glad to see this is finally happening. Curiosity, however - when opting in, do we then get only that version (the 64-bit beta), or will we also retain patched 32-bit binaries as well? Debating if I should make a 2nd copy of my game folder if something goes wrong with the new client.

Lightbulb Update Steam launcher files too

Can you all *PLEASE* update the launcher files on Steam when this gets deployed (and work that into your update process going forward)?!?
Every time I have to reinstall, it takes forever to download the updates and requires multiple restarts of the launcher because the launcher files that are initially grabbed from Steam are so incredibly outdated.

A Dev or GM can give more details, but if it's done the same as it is in LOTRO, everything gets patched together. You're deciding to run 32 or 64, in the same way you decide to run DX9, 10, or 11.
In LOTRO, if something isn't quite right, either the game or something on my computer, I can easily restart and switch to 32 bit if I want. So far (knock on wood) it's been running fine for me over there, so here's hoping the same goes in DDO.

Yes, this is exactly how it will work for DDO as well.

The main difference is that a 64bit client can use more ram than a 32 bit. I believe at 32 bit, the max is only 2gb. So it’s basically just improving the performance of the game... hopefully

Windows 7 in EOL and there is still a market for legacy 32 bit clients. That is beyond sad.

A 32-bit client can use most of a computer's 4 GB of RAM, with the remaining portion of the computer's RAM used to run the 32-bit operating system.

Biggest thing would be that ddo could access and use more than 4 GB of ram if you have it available. (They could also increase the plat cap on a 64 bit client lol).

Yay, the ranged funeral is available soon! Time to play an actual AOE class until time expires.

Also 64 bit programs tend to be faster as they are programmed to take advantage of the additional bandwidth the CPU will have. You can think of a bit as kind of like a lane on the freeway, more lanes the more cars (data) can be processed at once limiting the chance of the program choking.

Me too. DDO looks so good at higher resolutions, but there is no way to play it that way without the UI being scale-able.

Agreed, not playable in 4k because of UI elements made for ants.
