Pretty much a cookie cutter build, Mechs are solid enough that there's some room to play around with them -

(Assuming 1st life, 28 point build?)

I've run both these builds, both are great.

    o Self-healing Halfling Mech - This is a) a non-human, and b) spends a Feat slot for self-healing.

o Drow w/ Harper tree - Non-Human again*, but w/ the Harper Tree**. Also, this is 3rd life, a 32 point Drow - drop Int to 18 (put the extra 2 points into Str 10), and lose Concentration(?!).

(* If you don't have Drow, it's pretty easy to farm up 400 total favor on one alt to earn it for free (and that's 100 DP more toward Harper!). If you need a hand, let us know what server you're on, someone can probably help you make it happen.)

(** AND it's On Sale now ('til Thurs AM) @ 30% off, for 386 DP!)

Harper tree is great for Int builds, but you could go without.

    Note:
o If(?) you're going on to Epic play (Level 20-30), you want a base 21 Dex by then (21 before any gear/buff mods), for Combat Archery (an Epic-only feat). Start w/ 18, put a level-up point into Dex at Level 12 (or 16) for a base 19 Dex, and get your free +2 (Dex) Tome, and you're set.

o However, if you're NOT going (much) past 20, you only need a base 17 Dex, for Improved Precise Shot! You could drop Dex to 15, put those points somewhere else and count on the +2 Tome, OR any combo of starting points + Level Ups that = (unmodified) 17. Ymmv.

If you wanted to go Human, you'd have to pull the same trick to get 17/19 Dex - start w/ 16/18 Dex, and take one of your Level Up points there. Or more than one, and put the Build Points somewhere else. You'd have an extra Feat* to play with.

Also note that not all builds take Rapid Shot - it's been shown that altho' it helps at low levels, by high Heroics (late teens) it makes very little difference. ymmv.* (If you have a free slot, take it - it helps "some", and makes early leveling a little easier.)

(* The obvious alternative would be Insightful Reflexes, a sure winner for an Int build w/ Evasion.)

And now you know much more about Mechanics (ahem, possibly more than you ever wanted to!)

If, from the above, you know what you want (Race, other specifics, etc.), someone (me if no one else) can give you a personal blueprint using a character planner.

If you have or are willing to buy a +5 DEX tome, then the easiest option is:
    Code:

If you don't have a +5 DEX tome, you'll need to tweak stats and maybe your feat order, since you need DEX 19 for Improved Precise Shot and DEX 21 for Combat Archery + Improved Sneak Attack. Drow is also a viable alternative, particularly since the +2 DEX makes it easier to hit those feat pre-reqs for those without DEX tomes; drop either Rapid Shot or Insightful Reflexes, I'd say.

Harper is optional but recommended; and right now it's on sale for 30% off (~350 points) so it's a good time to pick it up.

You may want to think about inquisitor tree if you have. Although your normal attack will be with non-repeating light or heavy. When you enable no holds, switch to GXB.

But yeah if want to stay GXB full time, I would go something like 16R/2A/2F, 18R/2F, 20R max int obviously. If going self heal with not the. Definitely go arty route and you may want to consider 4A or more and drop F. Mechanic is fun and even more fun in inquisitor tree.

You could use literally any race if you wanted to, but I think he chose drow for the int bonus. Gnome also has an int bonus, halfling has save bonuses and dex to help you along to get IPS, human is good for anything, aasimar have healing hands, etc.

Halfling has the Dex bonus, but doesn't enjoy the +2 Int that Drow has, which adds bonus to damage (and w/ Harper, adds 1.5x bonus). Plus another skill point, which may or may not be a selling point once you're talking a dozen skill points/level.

And Halfling suffers under a 2/3 normal Encumbrance limit on top of -2 Str, which, when you're stretching your build points between Int, Dex and Con, leaves a 6-10 Strength and starts to get extra painful.

Drow's big advantage comes for new players who haven't unlocked 32 pt builds yet. Those 3x +2's are just money with some builds - like this one. +2 Int feeds DPS + Skills + Trapping, +2 Dex feeds (early) Evasion, Open Lock, AC, and meets the Ranged Feat requirements, and +2 Cha even adds +1 to UMD and Social skills - fairly convincing imo.

Human, otoh, has to scrape to get both a high Int and that 17/19 Dex requirement, BUT enjoys an additional Feat (and sim to Drow, the extra skill point is gravy on this build).

All 3 are good in their own way, all 3 have their individual drawbacks, all 3 make great Mechanics. (So do regular Elves (Displacement SLA) and Gnomes (Color Spray SLA), btw!)

If you do have 32 point builds, then Halfing or Human may(?) be better than Drow simply because then you have 4 extra build points to start. (@ new(er) Players - remember, Drow don't get 32 points until 3rd life!).

    o https://ddowiki.com/page/Drow

Bottom line, you can make any of those work fine.

I saw this in one of the builds I cited - I'm guessing this is for... in-combat scroll use? Does +3/+11 Concentration help at start/end-game? I'd think the DC's to cast if injured would be too high - or is this a case of "It helps some" and it's better than Listen?

    Update 42:
"The Concentration Skill's DC check now only uses 1/10th of the incoming damage to increase its DC."

    Ddowiki:
"When you take damage you roll a D20 + your Concentration score against a difficulty class of 10 + one tenth of the damage received + the level of the spell you are trying to cast."

    d20 + conc.score >= 10 + X(spell level) + damage/10 ---> [d20+ conc.score -10 - X] x10 >= damage without interruption

This means that every +1 point in concentration increase the damage you can endure without being interrupted by 10. With a concentration of 30 you can scrollcast Heal without interruption while taking 150-340 damage depending on your d20 roll. (Some1 with maths affinity confirm plz :P)

This skill seems to be useful again.

"FOUL MONSTER, YOU MAY KILL ME BUT I WON'T BE INTERRUPTED! MUAHAHAHAHAHAA"

    About OP's build

    - Being gnome of halfling also has a nice side effect: since you're smaller than other races, you can more easily shoot through small monsters with improved precise shot.
    - Human race has access to a very nice feat: Dragonmark of Passage. It gives a free 25% striding buff and from racial enhancements, dimension door, or even teleport, if you spend enough ap there. And they have an extra feat slot...
    - Listen is a good skill, spotting a dark silhouette of a dark elf in a dark cave may be hard, but if you see a blinking red dot first, you can focus there and now easily see the dark silhouette of a dark elf in the dark cave. :P

Okay, suggested blueprint, based on the requirements of the OP (some of which are not listed in this thread), namely...

    o Pure Rogue
    o Halfling
    o 32 pt build
o only to 20 and TR
    o not interested in DM
o not sure about Halfling+low Strength Encumbrance issue
    o not Tome-dependent (i.e. casual play re 1750 favor by Level 15)

Posting here for general QC check.

    Notes:

o re 28/32 pt build: This is up to you - no single "right/wrong" move on this, imo, they all "make sense", purely personal. Myself, I hate being encumbered. Hate it. Having to screen chests for heavy objects before I "loot all" fuels my hate with a great burning hatred. And that Encumbrance is made worse by no visual notification that it's happening (unless you notice the -5% movement speed, which I don't always do.) So ~I~ would put those 4 points into Str 12 and never look back, esp on a race that already has a 2/3 encumbrance penalty (also helps vs. Ray of Enfeeblement, breaking free from Webs, etc.).

BUT many Vet players insist that between +2 Guild buffs and a +Str item, it's never a problem for them, some even w/ a 6(!) Strength. Ymmv. If you don't want +Str, add +4 to Wis, for +2 to Spot & Will ST's. Or split the diff, +2 Str & +2 Wis (as shown above). (You could also go Int 17 & Str 9. Int is your combat stat, so that helps get more bonus earlier. Throw the few additional Skill Points into more Swim.) Your character, your call. GL.

o re Skill: Concentration: This is for using scrolls to self-Heal (or Raise party members!) while in combat. This (only recently) is now much easier to do (and thx again to those for pointing that out!) o7

o re Feat Rapid Reload > PBS: At low levels (1-2), most targets are small, so "more shots" is better than "bigger shots". Imo. Swap them to traditional PBS > Rapid Reload if you hate it. Level 3 comes fast enough, so it's a small diff either way.

o re No Rapid Shot?!: It's been shown that Rapid Shot helps at lower levels, but becomes almost unnoticeable by late Heroics. Dumping it moves all other feats up by 3 levels. Yes please, thank you.

o re Level 18 Feat: He's got everything he "needs" (and earlier than some other builds), so your choice here, whatever you think he could use for the final push to 20. Insightful Reflexes (if Int is much bigger than Dex), Resilience (if it's not, for +4 to all ST's), or Toughness (+21+ HP) all jump to mind.

o re "83 points" in AP's: Your first AP goal is in Harper for Int to Damage, 12 AP, so you'll have that by the end of Level 3. At Level 6, 1 AP in Mech Core 6 will give the same with Crossbows only*. Respec Harper back to 8 points for Know the Angles, which saves 3 points (12-4+1=9) for 80/80 total. (If you feel you the need, keep some AP short-term in Magical Endurance for more spell points for KtA, and/or grab a Spell Point ("Invigorating") item off the AH.)

(* yes, and Thrown Weapons, n/a to this build.)

o Simple AP goals: After the first 12 AP in Harper, all AP get spent in Mech*. Once you max Tier 4 (and are waiting for Rogue 12 for Tier V), which will be ~about~ Level 7 or so (and after the Harper respec, described above), that's when you start on other stuff - Assassin SA, TA for Fast Movement, etc. When you hit Lvl 12, dump Assassin and grab Tier V, then start to fill Assassin back in.

(* This is a first-life alt, so (probably) light on elite gear. If you're missing Saving Throws, grab Halfling Luck (+1 all ST's) early for 1 AP.)

o If/when you do hit 1750 favor (and you like Ranged builds), consider taking a +2 Dex tome - it will make 19 Dex that much easier next time around.

B/c 1 & 2 are only to get to 5 AP, so he can take Tier 2 stuff. Don't need 3.

(If(?) you think you won't have good gear, you can take 3 (and/or Mechanics 1-3 also), which helps weaker gear. You'd delay everything else by that many AP, and also have to lose some good stuff off the end of Assassin, though.

If, later, you feel your gear is good enough, you can "respec" those enhancements, spend some PP and change the way your points are spent. Easy, and not too expensive.)

When you hit Level 18(!), you stop taking levels when you can and "bank" to 20 - all the way to 1,899,999 XP (or very close). Staying at 18 lets you join Level 16 quests (+2 = 18, so you don't break Bravery Bonus), and 17, 18 & 19. (If you took 19, you would not be (as) welcome in Level 16 quests, b/c +3 levels over would break Bravery Bonus - and that's a lot of XP lost!).

When you do hit "cap" (max out on your XP), then you take 19, and do one more small thing to then immediately take 20. Once you are Level 20, you start running level 20 quests, and collect "Tokens of the Twelve". Usually you get 1/quest, but if you ask sometimes others will pass you theirs from the Epic End Chest (big purple thing, can't miss it!).

(If you had Epic Destinies, you'd do that too, but you don't, so don't worry about it for now.)

Once you have 20* Tokens, you trade those in for either a Heart of Wood (for TR) or Heart of Blood (for Racial Reincarnation), do your reincarnation, and start with your next build.

(* Some people will also detour and farm stuff for gear/etc. while they're high level. Maybe chase 2500 Favor for Favored Soul class, or 3000 Favor for Vet II status. ymmv.)

1st Reincarnation (your "2nd life") you're 34 points, 3rd life and later are 36 points.

If you TR (Heart of Wood) you get a Heroic Past Life - in this case, a "Rogue Past Life".

If you were to Racial Reincarnate, you'd get your 1st (of 3 possible) Halfling past lives. The first Racial PL gets you +1 to a skill, the second (for the same Race) gets you +1 to an Ability, and the 3rd (and last) gets you +1 free Racial AP that you can spend on later Racial Trees (so you have more than 80 AP total!). You can do this for all races that you own.

With this build, if you have good gear (near Level +2 in skill), you will be able to do all the traps. Get the best Tools you can (see Free Agent favor), and good Ability items (Int for most trapping). Problem at Level 1 is that you have no Trapping Gear to start, just some (very bad) Tools. Check the AH, and/or run Misery's Peak (and Sacrifices) and get the Troubleshooter's Set, for +3 to all Trapping skills.

For specific target numbers, see this Wiki project:

(You'll want to check both the Spot/Search values, and the Disable/Open Lock values.)

Yes, they "persist", or last through reincarnation - they are there, waiting for you, on all later lives. \o/
