    Default What is a "DC caster?"

    Yes, I really am that clueless. I see the term referred to everywhere but never explained. Which tells me (a) that it's a Basic Concept and (b) I apparently struggle with DDO basic concepts.

    While we're at it, and before I litter this board with basic questions, what other Level 0 terms are used in discussion without ever being explained?

    Maybe most importantly: are there any newbie guides that begin at Level 0? I've found a lot of guides that are for "new players" that turn out to assume a certain foundation of knowledge (maybe from playing other MMORPGs?). I need a truly Level 0. Like, an online DDO for Idiots Guide.

    dc caster - means a caster that casts spells that rely on a target failing said check - usually but not always with necro spells

    umd = use magical device

    sp = either spell points or spell penetration

    ^ This.

    The reason the term exists is to differentiate builds and styles from a DPS caster that focuses on causing damage rather than counting on failed saves.

    The DC caster will select items, feats and enhancements to increase the chances of their spells landing (Spell Penetration, Spell Focus, etc) and will often take Enlarge to allow them to cast these spells at distance. Finger of Death, Mass Hold, Otto's Ball and Charm Monster are common DC spells.

    The DPS caster will select items, feats and enhancements to increase the damage output of their spells (Maximize, Empower, etc). Fireball, Wall of Fire, Magic Missile and Acid Rain are common damage spells.

    As a side note, the latest spell pass (last week?) increased the power of damage spells but didn't touch DCs.

    Hobgoblin covered most but I would like to make a clarification

    DC Caster is a general categorization of a caster that "primarily" focuses on spells that require a save

    While Necromancy is a school that comes to mind first for most with its Save or Die spells, there is still the Enchantment school.

    It is not that these casters don't use DPS, it is just not their primary spell types they cast.

    Thanks to all. This is very helpful.
