Default Will DDO ever support Windows 10 and DX12?

I upgraded and DDO doesnt work. I guess I should have expected that

So I google it and DDO is too old, yet there is no official solution I can find from the actual developers. I must now trust random internet people about installing software on my computer to make the game run

What new player is going to go through that nonsense?

What exactly is the issue you are trying to raise?

    DDO won't install?
    DDO won't start up?
    DDO Graphics not working correctly?

I have Windows 10, Dx12, and no issues similar to what you are describing. Old installation and Fresh installation.

The only thing is I can't get Dx11 features on unless I update a Fresh installation of Windows 10 with the Dx Webinstaller to update Direct X first. Is that the issue you are having? Or completely something else? More info is needed to diagnose.

I was gonna offer to help, but I'm feeling so random today!
(this is a Microsoft arrogance backwards compatibility problem with DirectX, not a DDO problem, btw)

I finally solved it - my problems is no official instructions for the developers that I could find, on how to make their old game work on new systems. Also seems suicidal business practice not to make you game work out of the box with latest windows, but hey its not their first choice like that i suppose

I too think this is silly/unfortunate, but I do have a solution (at least one that works for me and has worked for many others). I have posted my solution a number of times (and may very well be the, or one of the, random people mentioned above regarding a solution involving downloading something... though I will say that what I link to is not some random 3rd party software but actual official patches from Microsoft).

Below is a copy-paste of my most recent post on a different site relating to DDO vs Win10/DX12...

Windows 10 comes with DirectX12, and despite advertising also having DirectX11.3, it will not show up in the DDO Graphics Options menu as an option. (it will actually be greyed out, not allowing any changes at all)

Why is this a big deal you ask? DDO and DirectX12 have ... issues. Particularly when alt-tabing to a different window (or clicking outside the game when in windowed mode), your game will instantly crash.

In order to fix this, you must manually install an older version of DirectX. Once that is done, the game will detect older versions and ask if you want to use that older version. Say yes to that!

First though, you have to download an older version. Follow this link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down...s.aspx?id=8109

Click the big red download button.

SAVE it to your computer. (you will have to create a folder for it. I used C: DX but you can make it anything and anywhere)

Once it's finished downloading, do NOT run. Instead, open the folder yourself, find the DXSETUP.exe file, and double click it to run (or right click to open/run as administrator)

    Follow it's prompts.

This will properly install older versions of DirectX, allowing you to choose 9, 10, or 11 to use with DDO.

Start DDO and when it detects that you have older versions of DirectX, tell it to use those versions instead.

Options > Graphics > Graphics Hardware Level (dropbox for DirectX of your choice)

I've been using DX11 with no issues. I can check my emails, look up the wiki, brows other sites, and open multiple instances of the game all at the same time just fine. No more crashing for me (and hopefully for you too).

note: if you do not manually do this as detailed above, your computer / the web updater will detect DirectX12 on your system and cancel the download/install, because you have something 'better' already.

Default DirectX 12 work around- downgrade to 11 error

Thank you for the detailed response! Any help would be appreciated. I Have Win 10 with DX12. The PC is new, as in 2 days old, so there is not much other than Win 10 on this machine.

I Downloaded the older version , however when I run the installer it crashes with a "Internal error" refer to log... which says...

Way to solve it and be mad at others for not helping out, then not telling anyone how you solved it.

I shut off my Windows Firewall protection, app and browser control options and core isolation and still received that error. Is there more areas to check/turn off UAC in Win 10? I am new to 10. I have WIN 8 on a different PC.

The only other things I have installed on this PC are; Battlenet, Chrome, Dropbox, DirectX Viewer and Call of Duty Black Ops 4 (which works).

So I just purchased a brand new top of the line gaming laptop and ran into the same issue regarding access denied on attempting to install older versions of directx. I spent half my weekend trying to get it to work and ultimately couldn't short of reinstalling windows, after which it worked. That is a little extreme though.

    Possible solutions include:
    • Run as Admin
    • Disable antivirus/firewalls
    • Run it in safe mode with networking (Make sure to have your password set and memorized first because you cannot use your pin and there is no way back without the password or reinstalling windows.)
    • Editing the registry
    • Reinstalling windows.

I don't know the source of the bug, but ultimately I had to reinstall windows to get it to let me install the directx sdk with the 2005-june 2010 update, after which it runs perfectly. However, if you do not want to reinstall windows, set DDO via your user preferences file to run in windowed mode or fullscreen windowed. This will stop it from crashing whenever it loses focus, and it will run otherwise fine and you can change other graphics options as you wish. It will not however let you use any dx10/dx11 features. This was where I was at before deciding to reinstall windows since it was a brand new machine and I didn't have anything to lose.

This is a two-fold issue as best I can tell. Some sort of install issue with windows itself that denies access no matter what to installing these older versions of directx, and the fact that the ddo installer doesn't include the versions of directx after 2005 as a part of its prerequisites. Though presumably if you are having the issue with the former it would remain an issue even if ssg fixed the latter.

I just downloaded installer from Steam after updating to win 10 and it worked without any issues.

For some reason it isn't a universal issue. I had a friend who likewise had no issue, just installed it and it worked. Last new pc I had it worked without issue. This time though, boom problems galore.

I'm not very tech savy at all. Just built a new PC and did a fresh win 10 install. I had an issue at first, but I Just had to install directx again. It really wasn't a big deal. Maybe I had to "run as admin"? I don't really recall as that would definitely be the first thing I'd try if I got "access denied" and it wouldn't strike me as memorable.

I took your advice and reinstalled windows 10 and low and behold I was able to install DX11! Same files I was tryuinbg to use prior to the install, I just moved them to a thumb drive so they would be the first thing I could install after the Windows reinstallation.

Downloading DDO now. I'll update after that is completed.

Updated: OK now everything works. Just needed to reinstall Windows....

Glad you got it working. I wish there was a better solution. (Or knew the exact cause)

I recently upgraded to a new comp with 10 and it worked with zero issues. Did you do the standard or high graphics version?

I installed an older DirectX, but at first saw similar (access denied) errors, so I logged onto the hidden admin profile, and installed it there.

Then I logged onto the regular user admin profile and installed DDO.

    1. Type "Command Prompt" into Windows search or Cortana
    2. right-click on the Command Prompt result that appears and choose "Run as administrator"
    3. After the command prompt opens, type: net user administrator /active:yes
    4. Double check to make sure the command is entered correctly and hit Enter on your keyboard.
    5. After running this command, the prompt will respond with: command completed successfully
    6. Switch to the hidden administrator account by clicking control+alt+delete, then click switch user, and choose Administrator.
    7. Install DirectX 11 (or whatever older DX version you use)
    8. Switch back to the standard user admin account by clicking control+alt+delete, then click switch user, and choose your Windows account.
    9. Install DDO.
