Default "Vorpal Queen" Gnome 20 Artificer for U36

Hey all. This is the build I'm using for Life #23 of my main character's neverending journey towards having 3x of every past life in the game - or rather, the Update 38 remix of said build. It's a Reaper-friendly third-life and beyond ranged artificer, optimized for repeater DPS, backup party heals, and massive self-cast Reconstructs.

This build requires the following premium features:
    • Artificer class
    • Harper Agent enhancement tree
    • A +3 or +5 Dexterity tome
    • Third life or beyond for a 36 point build
    • (Optional but recommended) Gnome race

    Additional information:

    True Neutral Gnome

Update 38 has changed so much on this build! The release of Renegade Mastermaker makes the build a lot tougher and much more durable. Converter allows you to Reconstruct a main tank if the healer goes down. Self-healing is now much more viable, as you can get base 100% Repair amp with only two feats instead of three like before. (Until Admixtures can be Quickened, going the self-forged route is NOT a trap.)

And of course, you're still the reigning Vorpal Queen.

The build no longer has to be a Gnome, though that's still the preferred race, with Human right behind. (Take one of Completionist, Past Life: Wizard, or Spell Focus: Evocation with the extra feat, and use excess skill points to top off Haggle and to get some Swim or something with the rest.)

If you have extra Racial AP to spend, get some ideas from the Update 36 version's enhancement spread. You no longer have to confine yourself to light repeaters, though, so keep that in mind. I didn't have enough points to get the SLA Reconstruct in Mastermaker, but that's actually fine. The spell version, RCW, and your Admixtures do the job well enough.

The +5 Dex tome is the only mandatory one for the build. If you don't have one, drop starting INT to 18 and raise starting DEX to 18; this will let you get Combat Archery with just a +3 Dex tome.

    Default Gearing

My general gearing for this character through Heroics was as follows:

Slot Prefix Suffix Extra Augment Versions
Helmet Intelligence Spellsight (ML5), Spot (ML10 and up) Insightful Intelligence Blindness Immunity ML5, ML10, ML16
    Goggles Greensteel ConcOpp (HP/SP) (ML11)
    Necklace Heal Impulse Protection ML5
Cloak Cloak of Invisibility Ghost-Waking Cloak Empty (ML9)
Bracers Mysterious Bracers Strength, Resistance (ML7, ML14)
Gloves Wizardry Potency (ML5), Healing Amplification (ML10) Insightful Dexterity Water Breathing ML5, ML10
Belt Dodge (ML5), Doubleshot (ML10) Strength (ML5), Natural Armor (ML10) Insightful Dodge Good Luck ML5, ML10
    Boots Dexterity (ML5), Spellsight (ML10, ML16) Sheltering Insightful Spellsight Feather Falling ML5, ML10, ML16
    Ring 1 Constitution False Life Insightful Constitution Master's Gift ML5, ML10, ML16
Ring 2 Fire or Kinetic Lore Combustion (ML5), Impulse (ML10, ML16) Insightful PRR Heavy Fortification ML5, ML10, ML16
    Trinket Doubleshot Deadly ML5
Armor Devotion Healing Amp Moderate Fortification (ML4), Heavy Fortification (ML8) ML4, ML8

From Level 10 onward, I used Scales of Avarice for armor (this is why Vitality is not slotted anywhere.) At Level 11, my necklace was swapped permanently to a Torc. At Level 9 and 13, my trinket changed to, respectively, The Blood Stone and Litany of the Dead. At Level 14 I swapped my gloves for Backstabber's Gloves, and at 15 my belt was swapped over to an Outpost Sniper's Belt.

At Level 5, you get +4 stats on crafted items. At 10, you get +6 and Insightful becomes an option. While you get +8 Enhancement/+3 Insightful at 15, I waited til 16 to pair them better with Gianthold augments. This is why the level breakpoints are where they are. Up until Level 5, I simply used whatever lootgen I could find.

Dodge is not slotted past lower levels because between Gnome enhancements, the Grim Barricade tree, and Insightful, you hit your Dodge cap pretty quick.

Runearms used were Flicker (Levels 2 to 4), Strinati's Hand Cannon (Levels 5 to 12), Arm of the Archons (Levels 13 to 18), The Arc Welder (Storm) (Levels 15 to 18), Lucid Dreams (Levels 19 and 20), and Toven's Hammer (Levels 19 to 20), with Hand of the Tombs and The Disciplinator swapped in when Disruption and Smiting, respectively, were needed.

Weapons used were various lootgen vorpals and crafted Light of Bludgeoning at Levels 1, 5, and 10, then Light Boltslinger from 15 and up. Silver Slinger is used from 16 and up as a swap against skeletons and others that have some form of Blunt DR.

I don't have any vids - trying to run DDO and any sort of screen capture program at the same time gives my computer fits.

    Default First-Life Version: "Vorpal Princess"

By request, a first-life friendly variation of the build. It requires Gnome, 32-point builds, Harper Agent, and a +2 Dex tome from 1750 Favor taken before Level 24. Enhancements and Destinies are the same as the ones taken in the first post.

Due to starting with 6 Strength, you should either get or craft the best Strength item you can find right at the start, or use Bull's Strength scrolls and wands if you are starting at Level 1. For a 34-point (first TR) version, increase Strength to 8 to relieve some of the early encumbrance issues.

If you did not want to burn a heart could you make the build work with 1 wiz level?

Just curious if it would kill the build or add a couple of features. I am just looking for a couple of DG past lives and have run a few crossbow lives so have a bit of gear.

    cheers

Sorry for taking so long to get to this, I've been out of the game for a few days to try to avert burnout.

Since the bow is such a major component of the build's DPS, losing the capstone and its +1 crit multiplier hurts a lot. You also lose the automatic Implement bonus, which shaves a little off of your spellpower for your runearm shots and your higher-level spells. It will end up working decent in late heroics, and be every bit as effective as an Arti with the old version of the Battle Engineer tree in Epics, which is to say not very.

You also have to rework the feats slightly due to BAB restrictions, meaning no IPS at all until 17. Move Maximize to 9 (8 Arti) and use the Wizard bonus feat on Quicken, or take Maximize at 1 with the Wizard feat. (Sadly, it won't be of much use that early.) Luckily, the other BAB-dependent feats are taken with Arti bonus feats, meaning you only have to deal with the natural one-level delay instead of doing some massive shuffling.

I'd go with a more caster-oriented Arti build if you're just looking to knock out Deep Gnome lives and can't burn +1 hearts.

If your goal is just "Deep Gnome + Arty PLs w/out LR +1" then you could probably tweak slarden's build to be arty 13 / ftr 6 / wiz 1. That way you keep +1 crit multiplier (Strike w/No Thought from Kensei) and gain a couple more feats to boot. Caster DPS takes a big hit compared to pure arties, though, so this would effectively be a ranged-only build.

Saving the old version of the build here for posterity. It's still viable, but doesn't take the Update 38 changes into account - and they do a LOT.

It's based on the Dubbell O'Seven build, but made fleshy. While I take this build in a different direction in Epics, without it as a starting point, I wouldn't have a place to start in making this build.

This build requires the following premium features:
    • Artificer class
    • Gnome or Deep Gnome race
    • +1 Lesser Heart of Wood (if Deep Gnome)
    • Harper Agent enhancement tree
    • A +3 or +5 Dexterity tome
    • Third life or beyond for a 36 point build

As far as the feats are concerned, since I'm not using the Magister twist for extra Evocation DCs or an Epic Spell Focus feat, I use Completionist and Past Life: Wizard as more well-rounded substitutes. The Spell Focus feats are still options if you lack the past lives. My Epic feats are also completely different, focusing more on ranged damage. Even with doubleshot only proc'ing a max of once per volley, it still helps with DPS, so I max it.

With this build, it is imperative that you use light repeaters whenever possible to get maximum damage and to-hit. Luckily, Update 36 added two very good options to the Gnome Arti's toolbox - the Light Boltslinger and the Legendary Light Boltslinger. Other good options are Needle, Quill-Slinger, and the Epic Doublecross Bow. In low Heroic Reaper quests, you will want a Vorpal repeater. Fishing for 20s isn't so tedious with the rate of fire of a repeater. Vorpal effectiveness starts tailing off in high Heroics, and by Epics you will want to be focusing more on straight-up DPS, or crowd control procs with the Doublecross Bow. Thunderforged and LGS also have plenty of options to help the build - remember: LIGHT repeaters!

The +5 Dex tome is the only mandatory one for the build. If you don't have one, drop starting INT to 18 and raise starting DEX to 18; this will let you get Combat Archery with just a +3 Dex tome. You can also use a Deep Gnome instead of a non-Iconic Gnome (with a +1 LR heart to remove the Wizard level) and largely keep the enhancements the same since Deep Gnomes also get the Gnomish Weapon Training line.

    Epic Gearing

I've finally gotten a version of this build back to cap, and I can list off some of my gear choices now.
(Includes gear up to Update 38)

Eyes: Legendary Garstone's Lenses (Insightful Rune Arm Focus +4, Greater Auto-Repair, Magnetism +202, Devotion +202, Blue Augment Slot)
Head: Legendary Unbreakable Stormreach Guardian's Helm (Constitution +19, Vitality +67, Fortitude Save +16, Fortification +202%, Trace of Madness (crafted: Delirium), Green Augment Slot)
Necklace: Legendary Chains (False Life +68, Seeker +17, Tendon Slice +14, Quality CON +4, Green Augment Slot)
Cloak: Legendary Phasecloak (Evocation Focus +8, Quality INT +4, Wizardry +412, Intelligence +19, Yellow Augment Slot (Evocation +2 slotted))
Belt: Legendary Outpost Sniper's Belt (Doubleshot +11%, Speed +30, Quality Distant Diversion +6, Insightful Dexterity +8, Yellow Augment Slot)
Hands: Legendary Hands of House Jorasco (Heal +22, Healing Lore +29%, Insightful Heal +11, Equipped Healing Amplification +40, Trace of Madness (crafted: Paranoia), Yellow Augment Slot)
Feet: Legendary Flightfoot Greaves (Freedom of Movement, Speed +30, Natural Armor +19, Reflex +16, Yellow Augment Slot) (I'm waiting for the boots to drop from DoJ)
Wrists: Legendary Construct Champion's Bands (Rune Arm Focus +8, Repair Amplification +80, Reconstruction +202, Deadly +16, Green Augment Slot)
Ring 1: Legendary Keylock Ring (Search, Spot, Disable Device, Open Lock +22, Blue Augment Slot)
Ring 2: Legendary Ring of Nightfall (Insightful INT +9, Insightful Deadly +7, Reflex +16, Physical Sheltering +50, Green Augment Slot)
Trinket: Legendary Symbol of the Slave Lords (True Seeing, Insightful CON +8, Lesser Displacement, Blue Augment Slot, Green Augment Slot)
Armor: Platemail of Strahd (+15 bonus, Deathblock, Ghostly, Physical Sheltering +52, Profane Well-Rounded +2, Blue Augment Slot, Green Augment Slot)

Rune Arm: Machination of Madness (Bee Shot, Knife Shot VI, Taint of Chaos, Rune Arm Charge Rate +30%, Impulse +159, Natural Armor Bonus +15, Insightful Repair Amp +31, Insightful Evocation Focus +3, Yellow Augment Slot, Green Augment Slot)

Weapon: There are many good options here. Great Crossbows can work well during Fusillade, while Repeaters are better for longer quests.
    Volley, Arbalest of the Damned
    Divine Artillery
    The Epic Fatal Flaw
    Legendary Heavy Boltslinger
    Legendary Light Boltslinger
    Needle, Quill-slinger

Thunder-Forged, Legendary Green Steel, Morninglord's, or Nightmother's versions of a Great Crossbow, Repeating Heavy Crossbow, or Repeating Light Crossbow can also work extremely well until you find That One Weapon that fits how you play.

I would suggest a starting Int of 20, a starting Dex of 16, and put level ups for Levels 12, 16 and 20 into Dex. Same cost, identical stats at Level 20 so you still get the Dex you need by then, but your starting skills and DPS are both (slightly) higher.

I had thought of that, but the build is practically swimming in skill points as it is, and doing too much of a levelup stat split can be confusing (even one can be too confusing, but it's a necessary evil here.)

Is there an alternate gearing that uses the Avenger set? It'd only provide HEavy armor for a WF/BF because docents but if you're staying at ranged...

Here's what I cam up with:
    Avenger Set:
    Armor: Avenger Docent
    Belt: Cutchord
    Cloak: Twisthallow
(Dex / Ghostly / Qual Dex / Ins Dodge / Fort / PRR / Blurry / Qual Dodge)

Wrist: Construct Champion’s Bands (RuneArm Focus, +Repair SP)
Goggles: Garstone’s Lenses (+Impulse, +Devotion, Ins Rune Arm)
    Boots: Flightfoot Greaves (Speed/FoM/Natural Armor)
Ring: Nightfall (Ins Int / Ins Deadly)
Ring: Prowess <=> Keylock (Consider slotting Spot/Search someplace just for when you don't need the full +22) (This can also be a Slaver's ring with accuracy in the 2nd slot).
Helm: Tiara of Madness (INT / Wiz / Sunder)
Gloves: CC: Doubleshot / AP / Ins Accuracy
Necklace: Slaver's Con / Seeker / Tendon Slice / Qual Int
Trinket: Slaver’s (Ins CON / TS / Displacement)

    Rune Arm: Anything.
    Weapon: Whatever

This setup is missing dodge and resistance, but I think that's about it.

You're definitely on the right track in fitting in SA set as it's probably the best archetype set in the game since the items aren't fluff and the bonuses are great. Personally though I'd skip on warforged and stick to medium armor since you can easily get around 15% dodge. I'd probably also skip the u38 Arti items unless you're going for the set, and honestly I'd probably still skip them anyways. The runearm/bracers are very limiting. I also agree that wearing keylock is wasteful with item swapping for traps is so easy.

Does anyone know if the RuneArm Focus effect stacks with Evocation focus?

The Legendary Tiara of Madness seems like it was made with an Artificer in mind. Int and Sunder and spell points and trapping skills. And the Legendary Executioner's Helm is also tailor made for repeater artis with a pile of Seeker, some quality Sunder, to hit/sneak and +5% damage.

It should, but you can't see it so it's hard to know if it actually does anything.

Do you have a breakdown of enhancements to take by level, or some general guidance for point spend priority?

I have 3 racial points to spend, which could cover the 3 Gnome points, would put the extra points in the Gnome tree or another?

Thanks, I look forward to trying this build.

    I know how it starts...

Race to Harper 11 for KtA & Int to Damage. (Once you have Insightful Damage (Lvl 3 spell) you'll respec this back down to 8 AP).

From there, I'd lean toward Battle Engineer (the main DPS of the 3 trees), but grab the low-hanging fruit of the RM tree. Once you hit Level 12, respec and grab all the Tier 5 Enhancements in BE, then backfill what you just lost.

If(?) you can scratch 3 AP off something else, grabbing Colorspray asap (8 AP total in Gnome) could only help.
