Default Trapper Knight for New Players

Here's an old build concept updated for a post-U29 world: rogue-splashed paladin with trap skills.

This version goes SWF w/khopeshes using heavy armor for Tenacious Defense (+20% HPs); the only downside is losing Evasion and capping your Dodge bonus. Like past builds such as ED37's Evasion Paladin, the extra rogue lvls buy you more skill pts, which you really need, IMO. I also take advantage of rog 4 to pick up Killer at lvl 20, which is a nice boost to single-target DPS; plus a few other DPS perks like Venomed Blades, Crit Mastery, and extra SAs. I take Dragonmark of Passage feat early on to acquire Dimension Door; once you hit epics, you should swap the feat, which also freed the APs I needed for Killer.
    Code:
    Trapper Knight (SWF)
    15/4/1 Paladin/Rogue/Fighter
    Lawful Good Human

    Level Order

    1. Rogue 6. Paladin 11. Paladin 16. Rogue
    2. Paladin 7. Fighter 12. Paladin 17. Paladin
    3. Paladin 8. Rogue 13. Paladin 18. Paladin
    4. Paladin 9. Paladin 14. Paladin 19. Paladin
    5. Paladin 10. Paladin 15. Paladin 20. Rogue

    Default Thx

Thank you for that. I can use this. I am however gonna change it to 15/4/1 pal/warlock/rogue human and use int to damage. But your build was what gave me the idea.

Yes, although since you have to start w/ftr on a PDK, you lose a lot of your initial skill pts.

In its current form: no, because only Swashbucklers can get SWF to stack with shields (bucklers).

If I bought a +2 tome for intelligence, would that allow me to mix in open lock?

Is there any way to modify this build such that I could work in lock picking as well? If I bought a +2 int tome and took it at level 7, would that give me enough skill points to also take open lock?

+2 INT tome gets you +13 skill pts, but most of those will be on pally lvls so it's really more like +8 pts if you spend them all on rogue skills. Nevertheless, that's enough to max out Spot or Open Lock (plus DD/Search/UMD which are the must-haves IMO), but not both. So decide which is more important to you: not having to memorize trap locations or being able to get at all the phat lewt.

And I can't use it before level 7, right? The +2 tome I mean. And one more question! Is there anything I should have in my off hand for this?

In-game tomes can only be taken after you hit the minimum level requirement; the new-ish DDO Store tomes can be taken at any level, with the bonuses applied at the appropriate level as you level. So you could a new Supreme +7 at level 1 if you wanted, but you don't get the +1s until lvl 3, the next +1 at lvl 7, etc.

You can use an orb if you want; otherwise you keep your offhand empty. You take a non-proficiency penalty if you don't have the Magical Training feat, but AFAICT that doesn't affect melee; you just don't get the orb bonuses when blocking, IIRC. Most orbs are geared towards spellcasting (no surprise); look for orbs with useful bonuses like Devotion (Blazing Sun) or Energy Siphon (Golden Orb of Death). You can also make a Thunder-forged orb: something like Devotion 150 / Dragon's Edge (Armor-Piercing carries over to mainhand) / Draconic Reinvigoration (regen proc carries over to mainhand, AFAIK).

Could do some minor changes like picking up shield mastery feats instead of SWF and taking a buckler/small shield to keep the evasion feat running. This would add some (although small) survivability and a great hit to to dps.

Drop khopesh feat, swap SWF for THF feats, maybe skip those extra pts in Balance for more Spot...that's about it, really.

So with the removal of Human damage enhancement how would you change the enchantment tree?

I'm not sure I would; I can't think of anything better to do with those 3 APs. Dual-boosting is a thing of the past, but you still get double the Melee Power Boosts of non-human races for 1 AP. And extra heal amp always helps too.
