Default Revisiting the TWF Drow Paladin for New Players (U23)

With all of the recent changes to pallies in Update 23, I thought it would be a good idea to revisit a classic newbie-friendly melee build, the TWF drow paladin. Historically pallies have had good survivability but poor DPS relative to other melee classes, particularly at higher levels; U23 has significantly upped their DPS while keeping their survivability. Strike while we have our moment in the sun, pally lovers!

This build requires having drow unlocked, obviously, which can be accomplished by hitting 400 Favor on a single char. It also requires a +1 DEX tome; if you don't have one and can't afford it from the Auction House, put your first lvl-up pt into DEX instead of STR.

I'll be posting two versions: a pure paladin and a pal 15 / rgr 5 split.
Pros of pure pally: lvl 18 & 20 KotC core enhs (extra light dmg, +10 Melee Power), two extra lvl 4 spell slots (enough for Zeal, Holy Sword, CSW, and Death Ward), better heals from Lay on Hands, Sealed Life (energy drain immunity)
Pros of pal 15 / rgr 5: free feats (which we'll use to add Manyshot for burst ranged DPS), Ram's Might, two Favored Enemies, Tempest bonuses to TWF (esp. +10% offhand procs and Dance of Death, which is much better than it was)

Basically, I expect the pure pally to have better survivability while the P15/R5 split will have better DPS. Neither build has Evasion, so both are expected to wear med or hvy armor for better defenses and Gtr Sacred stance bonuses. Likewise, both are based on rapiers to take advantage of drow racial bonuses.

Power Attack vs Precision: PA is better for low-AC zero-fortification targets, while Precision better for high-AC high-Fort targets (inc. constructs and undead). Ideally you have both and switch between them as necessary. However, due to feat shortage while leveling, you have to prioritize taking one of them first.

EDIT: updated 10/1/16 - relatively little has changed for pure paladins since U23, actually, but I thought it was time to give this build a refresh. Main question marks are what weapons do you use and whether you're going for Dreadnought as your primary ED; and if so, do you want to use Momentum Swing+Lay Waste?

Enhancements and spells are essentially the same for both builds, which is why I didn't list them twice. Main difference is needing PA+Cleave to unlock Momentum Swing+Lay Waste in LD, which makes feats a bit tighter; you will still use Exalted Cleave for actually attacking, though. I designed her to use rapiers, short swords, or heavy picks for heroic leveling, before switching to khopeshes in epics; although you can take it sooner by delaying one of the metamagics instead, which would also let you take Overwhelming Crit at lvl 21.

EDIT: Heroic weapons - Imp Crit:Piercing covers a lot of weapon types: daggers, short swords, rapiers, and heavy picks being the most common. Some worthwhile options are Tiefling Assassin's Blade, Sky Pirate's Dagger, Cutthroat's Smallblade, Cannith air rapier (esp. higher-level versions w/Sirocco), Deathnip (which becomes 16-20/x5 w/IC:Pierce+Holy Sword), Turbulent Epee (the poor man's DR breaker and an easy weapon to farm).

Skills: base INT 10 is enough to max out two of the following: UMD, Intimidate, Concentration, Heal, Balance.

Coming up next: the pal 15 / rgr 5 build (aka the Faithsworn Hunter Revisited).

    Default

The Faithsworn Hunter Mk II (pal 15 / rgr 5)

This build gets a major boost to its AoE melee DPS thanks to Dance of Death; more modest but still useful DPS boosts come from Ram's Might and other Tempest enhs (+10% offhand, +4 dmg, Growing Storm), as well as extra PRR from Imp Parry. I use the free rgr feats to add Manyshot, IC:Ranged, and Imp Prec Shot (req's +3 DEX tome before lvl 27), for a hefty ranged DPS option too. Despite the name, Holy Sword will affects bows as well as melee weapons - sweeeeet.

EDIT: going pal 14 / rgr 6 instead gets you two more free feats (MS & ITWF) and access to lvl 6 core rgr enhs (Exposing Strike is the most interesting option, IMHO, but it requires a significant rejiggering of enhs); but you lose a lvl 4 spell slot (Zeal), so it's a net DPS loss, I think.

For skills I maxed out Concentration and UMD, with 15 ranks of Spot and 10 ranks of Heal for good measure.

Drow already count as 32-pt builds due to their extra stat bonuses; the only way to get more build pts on a drow is to TR.

If you have access to 32-pt builds, you may wish to consider other races: humans get an extra feat & heal amp; halfling can pick up extra sneak atk dmg and possibly their Dragonmark for extra healing; an elf version of the pal 15 / rgr 5 split can pick up Aerenal enhs to boost rapiers & longbows and possibly the Shadow DM for Displacement.

You already have access to most AA abilities with rgr 5, so there's not really any need to unlock the racial AA tree. You can shift APs from, say, KotC to AA or DWS if you wish to beef up ranged DPS; that's up to you, as resetting enhancements is pretty easy.

This build is based on drow because they're easy to unlock (just 400 Favor) and +1 DEX tomes are relatively cheap, thus making it a more newbie-friendly option. For 32 pt or more builds with access to better tomes, I would probably go human for the extra feat, heal amp, and racial Dmg Boost, which will stack with either Tempest Haste Boost or KotC Melee Power boost. But elf is also a reasonable choice; pallies are strong enough now that you can pick the race you want and not feel like you horribly gimped yourself.

7d6 light damage from the pure pally build per hit from the KOTC capstone sounds pretty tasty for TWF. The 15/5 version would have only 2d6 or 3d6. Also there's the 10 melee power from said capstone, the good damage flag and the +4 charisma. Is dance of death really that good now?

For AoE DPS, no question DoD outperforms Avenging Cleave. The pure pally may hit for more dmg per hit, but the rgr/pal is going to hit way more often on mobs of two or more.

For single-target / boss DPS, I'm not sure: +10 Melee Power and +4d6 light dmg (avg +14 dmg per hit, scales w/Melee Power but doesn't crit IIUC); vs +6 base dmg (2 from Ram's Might, 4 from Tempest enhs) which is +18 on crits (Holy Sword+rapier), +10% offhand (~+4% DPS), d6 SA from DWS, Growing Storm. [+4 CHA from KotC capstone -> +2 STR from Div Might vs +2 STR from Ram's Might - so that's a wash.] I suspect the +10 Melee Power gives the edge to pure pally, but it's really close.

If only we had the Drow Tempest racial PrE that I seem to recall was mentioned as a possibility in ages past. However I suspect that the bad example set by Monkchers makes it unlikely that we will ever see another Racial PrE.

The problem I have with drow Venomed Blades is it costs 18 APs to max out and you have to take a lot of filler to get it, particularly if you're not planning on drow racial weapon bonuses. I suppose 10 APs in the cores for +6 Spell Pen +2 CHA, 3 APs Venom Lore, 2 APs Darkfire (or some other filler), 3 APs Venomed Blades?

But the other downside is Venomed Blades is just not that much extra DPS unless you've got a ton of Melee Power and/or other abilities which exploit poison dmg (see this blog post for one example).

BTW, which feat did you intend to drop to take khopesh prof?

I understand, poison vulnerability is needed to increase the damage os venon blades. Maybe a centered 14 pally 6 monk with short swords?

The feats of the pure pally drow would be: PA, TWF, ITWF, GTWF, IC slash, precison, khopesh (7).

I actually have a very old 13/3 drow paladin/rogue I going to LR the levels to monk and into something like this with. Now if only I could find the seals/shards for 2 envemoned blades and a poison quiver. Only downside is you can only get one level 4 spell and no capstone.

I considered using SWF to for the melee power boost, to bad there isn't a good orb for poisons =).

What do you all think of this build. I have a Drow I took to 28th as Ranger 6, Rogue 2, and Monk 12. He took all feats and enhancements geared towards TWF with short swords.

As I'm getting ready to TR him, I want to try out Favored Soul, but stick with Short Sword TWF. On this build I gave up being able to get Resurrection for taking two levels of Fighter for the feats and Kensei Enhancement Tree. The six levels of Ranger were taken singularly for Tempest enhancements.

With this build I should have +17 to hit and +16 to damage, and a starting PRR of 20.

Please tell me what you think and where you think I could make improvements. (note, I'm not interested in picking up ranged feats and enhancements, pure melee and casting)

(note, I'm not interested in picking up ranged feats and enhancements, pure melee and casting)

a lot of things i find are don't match up in your build (no offense meant)
1 why take dodge feats + dodge enhancements ? (common practise is to either go Evasion or hvy armor; you don't get Evasion with These class Combo, and you don't Need either dodge feat nor dodge enhancements if you want to use heavy armor .....
i would probaly go either 3 pal or fighter / 5 Ranger / 12 Fvs or scratch DoD and go 3 pal / 4 Ranger / 13 Fvs (to get bb + heal spell)
enhancement wise your sacrificing all your spell casting to get a measly + to hit / dmg more ....... ( if you want to make use of FvS casting you Need to spent some in AoV tree ..... as well as i would take at least quicken + maximize ; if you can fit it in also empower )

feat - wise (must haves for a melee / caster FvS :
    * maximize, quicken
    * twf, itwf, gtwf, power attack or precision , impr. critical
    * nice to have empower

skill - wise : conc, heal, spellcraft are each pretty important (might get away with only some pts in conc, since you take quicken feat)
jump, umd, Balance if you have pts to spare
