Default RIP Summon Monster IV's usefulness. (At least in Rainbow in the Dark)

    From the release notes.

The environmental lighting effect from Lantern Archons has been removed due to the lighting effect's potential to impact game performance.
Now I'll have to memorize the dungeon for my non-caster lives in there

At least now I know who to blame for all the lag. Damn FvS's.

    NOOOOO!

My lantern archon was the best buddy ever in the underdark, in rainbow in the dark, in the drow city, and everywhere there was slightly low light.
I am seriously bummed about this.

Just ran out to Rainbow to test my FvS's flashlight and it still lights the place up.

    What is FvS' flashlight?

bs..we all know you are full of .... when you say you this is why you are "fixing" ths
... there was no lag or performance issues when this was working.

    Fun while it lasted.
Now I guess I can throw away all my stacks of level 4 scrolls of summon monster I kept on toons runing vale stuff.
Now to figure out how to get my pet or hirling to carry the wand when soloing on a melee.
I've always just bite the bullet and use it as a weapon. The quest isn't that hard once you know it.

Angel of Vengeance Summon Archon. I've heard it called a flashlight pretty frequently.

Weird is definitely a good word for the mindset of the Turbine developer if they think we'll fall for their claims that this will somehow affect lag. I cannot think of a single instance where I have seen a player use the Lantern Archon summon outside of Rainbow. Considering they fixed the rock pile in Let Sleeping Dust Lie, this is clearly an attempt to force players to stick to the quest mechanics.

I feel that them ignoring the Favored Soul archon was merely an oversight and I wouldn't be surprised if they changed that too.

I'm not sure. Since it's an enhancement it should probably be more powerful than a regular summon.

Shadow walk (scrollable) is still useful in Rainbow.
As a drawback, you have to recast it every time.

But the Lantern Archon also piked a lot, made irritating noise and died all the time with a long cooldown to summon another, so not a big loss.
    I don't care...

This change came out of an investigation into ways to improve performance in the Thunderholme raid area. The Lantern Archon was indeed having an impact on game performance due to its environmental lighting effect. We were well aware that some folks liked using it as an alternate light source in Rainbow in the Dark, but the overall impact of the effect on the game necessitated its removal.

Really getting sick and tired of you guys taking things away when something new comes out and is bugged.....the light form the sholder cannon is a big part of the fun.

Are you actually suggesting players are using a CR 4 summon in an end game raid area? I could understand Rainbow as you can't simply turn up gamma or brightness to see better, but actually Thunderholme? Is there some amusing benefit that completely slipped past me?

It's not just the summon, there is the FvS SLA in the Angel of Vengeance tree that causes an archon to appear on the user's shoulder. That also lights up the surroundings.

No, I'm not saying that. Rather, the trail that began with looking into performance improvements in Thunderholme eventually led into the discovery of the impact that the summoned archon had on game performance. Unrelated, except for the process that led to its discovery.
