    Default Centered Paladin?

    So, I'm on my bajillionth life, and was looking a doing another Paladin life, since for some reason I really want to. That being said, paladins are lackluster in the anything-but-surviving category. I remember my first life through it being able to kill anything, eventually. I couldn't hurt them as fast I could in other classes, but I was effectively unkillable. I'd like to upgrade a bit, so I threw together a few builds, largely centered around Ellis's build ideas and ideas from that thread. I like using the pally high saves with evasion, so both builds factor that in.

    The first is centered shortsword-wielding (since I have an EE Rebellion and Celestia, so may be fun). I couldn't quite think of how to spend feats, so thoughts here would be appreciated.

    I'm not married to either of these ideas, but the saves and spell-healing appeal to me. I primarily run EH content, and periodically EE. Also, looking for something which would be fun to level up. I have capped EDs, 1 level of colors of the queen, plus whatever EPL I take when I ETR this week. (Constructive) feedback appreciated.

    How do you stay centered in the second build? The first build I can see with some Ninja Spy, but the second build using Gaxe or Gsword would require at least 8 Fighter levels and a top tier enhancement in Kensei.

    I have a pally/monk who is very survivable and deals solid damage. I've actually been impressed as the build exceeded my expectations as far as damage output goes- I mostly intended it to provide a lot of survivability while getting by on the DPS end, but I'd say it is at least comparable to many other survivability DPS builds out there, and of course really shines versus evil outsiders.

    I actually went 14 Pally and 6 Monk, and went with a DEX build. I'd highly recommend the dex build, as it boosts the heck out of your AC and reflex saves. My particular version is drow since I can get extra dex and cha and I like the SR, though you could easily do any other race you want and get more build points. My version uses WSS and uses longswords (because I have a pair of Tinahs and Oathblades which I use), though a shortsword build would actually save you two feats (and give you better synergy with drow if you went that route). The build relies in getting extra crits from tier 3 earth stance (basically giving overwhelming crit to a centered build with no need for STR), exalted smites, divine sacrifice, and fists of iron. I have shadow veil from ninja spy for 25% incorp, and ninja poison which actually seems to damage EVERYTHING (even undead, strangely) and stacks up to quite a bit of DoT damage. Feats through 20 are I think IC: Slash, the full TWF line, power attack, master and grandmaster of forms, wpn foc: slash, WSS, and one other monk feat (might of even taken deflect arrows for the extra damage mitigation, but not sure, I'd have to check). I'll admit, its nice to laugh at beholders and casters (due to sealed spirit), dance through spell damage (due to evasion and high reflex), shrug off CC spells (due to SR and high saves), heal a ton with amped spells, LoH, and Unyielding Sov, and have 600 hp at 22 with almost minimal epic destiny progress or twink gear on this toon yet. So, while I think pure pallys are king of dead nowadays, you can still make a great splashed pally monk.

    Yeah, the second one isn't centered. I threw it out there as another option.

    Leclaire1, I like that idea. I'm working on drawing together an idea of it

    Edit: Threw something together below. Enhancements are very tight, and couldn't even squeeze in everything I wanted. About 2-4 points short of where I'd want to be.

    Nice, its fun to see a human variant on this build posted here. Enhancements are definitely tight, which is why on the drow version I didn't take almost any racial enhancements, which allowed me to take Divine Retribution and a few other goodies. I also took some shintao stuff that upped my offhands and increased my physical resistance in earth stance, and the basic sacred defender stance (which provides benefits even without a shield) to get another 15 PRR and +3 saves. All in all, I think I ended up with 45 PRR before any equipment bonuses, which I forgot to mention in my first post. Doesn't seem too bad for an unarmed build. Nonetheless, if I were human I'd definitely invest in the dragonmark of passage as that is useful indeed! The extra feat also helps. Thanks for putting this together.

    The main problem I had with this was that many of the feats you want (ITWF, GTWF, IC:Pierce) are not martial arts feats, and have a BAB requirement. The only way to take ITWF before 9 is to have first 6 levels be paladin, but that gimps you in a few ways. You also need 3 levels of monk to use shortswords properly (damage + to-hit). You also want to have your 6 levels of monk before level 12 so you can take master of forms at 12, since it's a big jump up in dps.

    For that reason, I'd probably either be running with either Carnifex/SoS until level 12 or doing handwraps. There's a real lack of decent short swords at low levels. What I see using are:

    Level 1-11:
    Handwraps/greataxe/greatsword.
    Maybe if I want to push it, make a screaming of bleeding short sword, but a lack of STR makes nearly no difference at these levels

    Level 12-15:
    GS Lit 2 - (need to craft) - Or maybe enervation? That would push it to usable in epics
    Vamp Fury shortsword - (If I have ingredients, otherwise make something else?)

    Level 16-19:
    GS + Envenomed blade

    Level 20-24
    Epic Garos?
    GS still?
    Star of Day?

    Level 25+
    Celestia
    Rebellion



    I also redid the build to take your points into account. And that I realized the poison exploit thing was a dark monk ability, not the "Sting of the Ninja" ability. I'm wondering if I should be taking more in that tree, but it's real, real tight on AP. I ended up pulling alot of points out of ninja.

    You are correct that the feats are tight in the lower levels. If I recall correctly I did the first 6 as pally and the second six as monk, and then paladin all the way up, which got me tier 3 earth stance at level 12, though I wasn't able to take Greater TWF till 15. Thankfully the low level game is fairly easy, so I think I just grabbed a two-handed weapon and heavy armor for the first six levels, and switched to the centered, unarmored focus when I got evasion at 8. This definitely begins to come into its own at 12 and gets more powerful as you move into the upper heroic levels. The stretch from 14 to 20 through the most challenging heroic content was pure delight though, and surviving and contributing in epics is a breeze, so I'd say it was a worthwhile trade off.

    So, as an update on this build while I'm at 15, holding 16.
    1) I thought dex would be more viable than it is. I took a few level ups in Dex, and given doing this again, would lower dex to 15 and spend all level ups in CHA or STR. Right now divine might goes a long way. At 120 seconds per, and with 15+ of them I never really run out of them. More STR would be quite nice as well since you keep getting uncentered because everything throws ray of enfeeblement.
    2) Basically unkillable once you get sealed soul. Main downside is you can't take tier 5 stuff until level 12, which is just lame. I would have loved it while I was doing VON3 beholders. At 15, without even trying kicking around at 37 PRR, 40+ in all saves, 450 HP, 19% dodge.
    3) Needs potions at lower levels. Gets better when you get empower heal. Even at 15 empowered cure light with the 4 LoHs you get does a pretty good job of holding over. Without torc/Con-Opp, this would be tough. I have doubts this build would even be viable un-geared.
    4) I didn't take the Human DD enhancements until about 13. I had them in periodically, but I respecced my enhancements quite a bit. APs are very, very tight.
    5) While early leveling I pretty much went wrap-using. Devotion (wraps) are fantastic at level 6, and screaming of bleeding goes a long way. At level 8 I went shortswords, since I pulled a mastercrafted acid burst of draining, and a holy of draining shortswords. Still mixed in wraps, and even at 15 I toss on the mabar wraps for alot of undead.
    6) Overall, survivability of this is very high, but dps is less than I would hope. Perhaps it would get better, but comparing to my last life of monk/druid, this dps is much lower than I'm accustomed to. That being said, in every group I am by far and away the last one standing and have often killed everything which wiped the rest of the party, then rezzed everyone.
