    Default New Player Build Check?

So I'm way new, but I hate the games pre-made builds. I tried my luck with this character build and will attempt to build/play it later. Any suggestions? Please note that I don't have any paid content, and certainly not tomes. (Also, if this doesn't format right because I'm just copying and pasting, I am sooo sorry. D

    some thoughts.

you are missing 2 feats - your level 3 feat and your level 18 feal

u dont need to pick rapid shot. you get that as a level 2 ranger.

so that leaves you with 3 feats.

i suggest power attack cleave great cleave.

yes i know you are a ranger that shoots things all the time and you dont want to put down the bow and tangle with the enemy.

try it. its fun! (and a lot quicker when many shot is on timer)

    that being said,

i would also raise str, not dex. you have bow str why not use it?

so lower your dex by 2 - raise str by 2.

with 5 level ups that gives you a 21 base str and you can take overwhelming crit. very nice feat that increases your damage.
if you pull tomes its even easier, as you can put 2 levels into dex and take combat archery as you wanted.

    just some thoughts

Two things off the bat - there's no need to show automatic (granted) feats, nor skills - just makes it harder to read your feat choices.
And I prefer enhancements done at level 20, because it a) shows you the full tree+options, b) makes it easier to read and keep track of them for the reader.

Lv 2 ranger gives rapid shot. You didn't take a level 3 feat, I recommend power attack. Weapon focus range isn't needed for anything these days (irrc, could be wrong), so you could drop that. Power critical is a fairly bad feat - might be worth picking up Improved Critical slashing. Even if you don't use melee often, you do get GTWF for free - no reason to disregard it completely. Also missed lv 18 feat.

I also think you missed favoured enemies, but my head hurts too much to double check - however, avoid FE: Ooze. Ew.

Epic dext is also fairly bad, skip that imo. Epic mage armour is also terrible.. not that there's many good options.

I'd personally swap to str based, take PA at level 1, cleave at 3, great cleave at 6, IC: Slashing at 12, then Overwhelming critical at 21, instead of epic dext.

That's just me though - yours will work fine, albeit a bit sub-par. (Although, all pures are missing a bit)

the 'code' tags are used to keep the formatting of things you post. That's why the character build you put up says 'code' at the top.

    Here's a quick response:

Comments: the mark of passage is handy to have if your build is not very strapped for feats, you get 25% striding at low levels without using an equipment slot, you get the handy dimension door ability, and you can teleport to various places, rather than run there. Plus it gives you something to spend points on in the human tree to get greater heroism and 30% healing amplification.

Precision feat works with ranged combat and allows and gets you 25% fortification bypass against things like raid bosses, constructs, and undead. The main competitor to precision is power attack, and since you won't be using that most of the time, you might as well get the bonus from precision.

Then why take the power attack -> cleave -> great cleave chain? so you can take the overwhelming critical feat at level 21. AFAIK, the epic combat archery feat is still not working properly. If it does get fixed, a build with more dex to take it might be worth looking at, and replace power attack with something like mobility -> spring attack, and I dunno, maybe toughness.

Empowered healing taken at level 24 on the assumption that you'll eventually be twisting in Rejuvenation Cocoon.

    Favored enemies:
    Undead
common from levels 1 to 15, so best taken early.

    Giant
Trolls and ogres are common mid level enemies, and useful again in gianthold

    evil outsider
not as important as it used to be, but it's still a large category of enemies covered by this one

    elf
    for those pesky drow

    construct
or player's choice. Plenty of random constructs to fight, and they are a popular choice because so many other forms of bonus damage (sneak attacks, criticals) usually don't work against them.

    ----------

You generally don't have to worry about your to hit rolls, so things like weapon focus: ranged and attack boost aren't worth taking.

The two action boosts you want are damage boost (human tree) and maybe haste boost (tempest tree)

Unless you are somehow getting DEX to damage with bows, you are better off raising strength for more damage (plus you need a high strength to be able to take overwhelming critical.

    ----------

One piece of gear I'll point out to you that might not be immediately obvious is a 'deception' item that doesn't take up your weapon slot. This makes it much easier to get your sneak attack damage on monsters.

    Examples of 'handless' deception items:
    Backstabber's gloves
    Ring of Lies
    Ring of Deceit
    Seal of House Avithoul
    Golden Guile

I wouldn't go DEX-based on a human rgr; either STR-based or switch to elf if you really wanna be DEX-based, since elves can get Grace (add DEX to dmg with elf racial weapons). I would skip WF:Ranged & Power Crit and invest more feats into melee; likewise I'd spend some APs on DWS & Tempest, rather than focusing solely on AA.

BTW, last time I checked, the rgr capstones are bugged, so there's little incentive to playing a pure rgr until they're fixed. Have a look at EllisDee's Tempest trapmonkey for one alternative.

You could also stay dex based it you spec for scimitars and put a few points into tempest for dex to hit, scim as light, and scim damage.

You get Bow Strength as a Ranger so going STR based seems more logical but if you are after flavor follow this ^

Also, the Combat Archery (? Think this is the correct name) seems to elude programmer fixes sense U14
