Lightbulb To future of DDO! My name Xxxgfggg. Get it? Need to evolve creation of char names!

To future of DDO! My name Xxxgfggg. Get it? So pronounces for me to hear! Yes we need to evolve the creation of char names urgently!

Salute to all players and developers.

I love DDO as a unique game which differs by its competitors by forming Teams balanced each with its role in the adventure.
So I would like to alert developers or anyone who manages the game.

CHANGE THE CREATION MODE/ARCHTECTURE OF NAME OF CHARACTERS, AND FAST!

    - Is "the name" is precisely what you will distinguish you from the other characters. "The name" that will bring you reputation among players. "The name" is the most important thing in "creating" the character!

    - Today the creation of a new name for my character or change the name of my old character is absurd. I do not want ridiculous names or none nexus as Xxxxxtggggg or Ggrrrrrruk where neither the right to pronounce. (If I were ork fine, but damn I'm human, lol). OK the conversation is serious!

    - The architecture of the game, today, not let you create names with space or special characters or at least accent. This makes it very difficult to invent a name that I like it and that no longer exists in server.

    - Imagine if the player never get into the game, he created a character named Conan, played by 1pm, barely arrived at level 5, did not like the game and never in his life will play again, this name is unusable by remaining lifetime of the server! I'm sure that many characters have more than 5 years without access!

Fix it it as soon as possible. And do not tell me that does not, If you can not, sorry dude but you are losing new players. No investment / attractions to gain new players you will be cutting the life cycle of new players and if this continue to go that way you lose money, fans (players) and will be frozen in time. There will be no future for DDO, only the glories of the past will be forgotten with time. Ok, I'm dramatizing too but think a little. I will be more objective next!

There are several ways to fix this, follow examples from other MMORPGs:

    Example Number 1:
A certain very famous Korean MMORPG: You can put in your first name spaces and accents. I Might create character names as "Geralt Of Rivia" in the first name, another player who wants the character's name as "Geralt", can create by adding a surname in own first name, or rather, a Middlename: "Geralt The Witcher ". This opens up a huge range of possibilities.

Example # 2: (the best way of naming characters in my opinion)
Also a certain MMO based on D&D: You can create any name you want, regardless if other characters also have the same name. The unique identifier of the player is at your Login name associated with the character.
An example: Character named "Hercules" of player login "Texugo1986" and another character also called "Hercules" of player login "Hexodus" and many other characters with the name "Hercules" when they want, the player who decides and he will never feel limited or get that annoying message that this name already exists.

Example No. 3: (Not very good, but can be used as palliative)
A certain RPGMMO based on Starwars: Accepts accents. They possessed dozens of servers, with the decrease of the players they closed almost three quarters of its servers and migrated the characters of the servers closed to another active server for grouping a greater amount of players on each server. In this migration the characters had migrated to rename the name of the characters, and, where they already existed up that name it creates a new one. This week I received an email saying that the characters under level 30 will be flagged for rename, or other players can create characters with the name of my CHARACTERS. (I can understand their side, after all, how many characters we create, does not pass the level 5 and then never plays, never even)

This information is for you developers / administrators / owners of the game. I hope some developer read these tips, this outburst touch their hearts (lol, yes this was unnecessary), spend some think about it and act as quickly as possible... for the future of DDO.

Do not come to chat that is not possible, the architecture of the game does not allow, I'm a Systems Analyst, I know it is possible, costs money and resources ... but it is possible.

    Tks.

good idea. I always though the character id should be at least "name + surname"

    Extremely simple solution

    Charactername@accountnickname

This way There could be a billion drizzt's, all with a unique accountnickname. Perfectworld does their accounts this way and it works well. Of course even seeing one person name their toon drizzt makes me want to stab my eyes out with a spoon.

Every time a Server Merge thread pops up people bring out the excuse that they wouldn't want to change their character names.

I reply every time that Turbine could remove this issue entirely just by adding an "Of...." to the name.

Lets' take G-Land and Orien as the example:

Marco of Ghallanda {a Dwarf Stalwart} and Marco of Orien {a Human Pale Master} needn't be required to make new names as Turbine could just add that "Of ...." to their Name.

For some reason people ignore this reasoning and simply repeat their gripe even when replying to my posts - I feel they don't trust Turbine to make this change - Why is this?

    Also:

I've asked before why we can't use our Forum Name as a Unique identifier for each player's characters {Forum Names are supposed to be unique right?}.

I feel it's safe to assume that neither of these is a "Simple" Change for Turbine to make as I can't see them not doing it if they were.

However I do feel that after 7 years it's definitely time for Turbine to look hard at their naming conventions!

    Lastly:

    Dead Characters
    ---------------

Any Character of Lvl 5 or Lower that hasn't been logged on since 2008 should have it's name taken from it.
Any Character of Lvl 3 or Lower that hasn't been logged in since 2006 should have it's name taken from it.

Anyone coming back to the game after that long is more than likely going to have forgotten their original log in anyway and even if not should certainly not expect to have kept their character name - Just add a Free Re-Name token upon log-in as compensation.

Almost Every real name out there is already taken.

How many John's, Pauls, Mohammed's, Sarah's, Elizabeth's, Zhang Wei's do you see in real life

How many do you see in DDO?

NONE that's how many because they were all taken 7 years ago and are therefore lost in time.

It's easy to make the "Steal From Fiction" Excuse as you've just done BUT I have no intentions of ever making a Drizz't a Shea or Will Ohmsford {I'll keep the Ohmsford part but I'm making my own characters thank you}, a Legolas or a Strider, a Merlin or Arthur or many many others.

I do have a Lieuk Skywalker and Anaqin Skywalker {Both Monks of course}.
I do have a Dwarf named Biffur on a secondary f2p account - I used to have a Dwarf named Biffur on my main account but he was deleted years ago.

BUT again I don't see the requirement for there to be only ONE of a single first name per server - I feel it's less realistic than it should be as in reality and many fantasy's and mythologies first names are not in any way Unique!

Heck 1 in 3 American TV Shows and Movies seems to name it's Lead Character either Jack or John - Stargate SG-1 had Jack O'Neill and Atlantis had John Sheppard for a start.
How many Jack's or John's has Harrison Ford personally played? - Answer is 4 - John Book in Witness, Jack Trainer in Working Girl, Jack Ryan in Patriot Games and Clear & Present Danger and Jack Stanfield in Firewall.

Some names are inherently more popular than others and it's nastily restrictive that DDO does not allow for this.

I still say using more than a first name over complicates tells and mail

Here are some of my names

    Uska
    Kasu
    Auks
    Suak
    saku
    Kothosn
    Toggle
    ShatterStone
    Claranett
    Kisska
    Denial
    Dharc

see its easy I can go to any server and make a name very quickly and I am sure most have a better imagination than I do. I will say though any character older than lets say 3 years old should be archived and have its name made available

    thats actually a good idea.
I would make it level 7 and 2010 though. If they didnt get to that level 3 years ago then they arnt going to any time soon.

Just awestruck, wether it be a Dragon flying overhead Stormreach, that glowing character who just zoomed in'n'out of the Pub, or that i can drink a Beholder under the table and best of all rescuing Damsels in distress.

I don't want any changes. I have absolute zero trouble coming up with great sounding, roleplay names, and having to think hard about it makes nice named players all the more unique to see. I also don't want changes in the simple and good /tell system we have, just so that people can name themselves something stupid like "Hercules" or "Tom".

In the past 1 year I came up with several names for my toons with ~10 minutes of thought, such as Theklore, Talinthor and Khaldern.
They all sound just fine, and fit their respective characters. It's not that hard, just got to dedicate your mind to it for a couple minutes.

If you want to use your real life name for a Warforged, or name a Fighter "Hercules" or "Batman" then you deserve to be barred from doing that, on account of trying to play a fantasy RPG with zero imagination.

I make new alts all the time. It's one of the things I like best about this game, and coming up with a name that suits the build I have in mind is one of my habits. Is it hard? Sometimes. Impossible? Hardly.

Thesaurus.com helps, as do some other sites, for those who are having issues.

While I can see changes to the way names are encoded would be helpful - I think that it's not going to happen for a variety of reasons.

For those of you who say its easy to come up with names:

I like names that are uncommon or even exotic in real life, but that do exist. It would really bum me out if I couldn't use Casper or Ethelred just because some other guy got to it first. And the thing is, these characters have history for me from other games. If I have to change the name -- even just the spelling -- I'm basically not playing the character I want.

I like the idea of prepending the forum/username to the character first name. It works well in other games I play.

A-HA! You come up with a name that suits your build? That's fine.

But sometimes I like to come up with a build that suits the name I have in mind.

My paladin is named Victory Greatheart. It perfectly describes this halfling's personality; how could I possibly improve on it? But since "Victory" is a real word, it wouldn't have surprised me if someone else had used it first. What would I have done then? Call her something less cool?

i had many of my first name choices. then the european servers were closed down and i had to join a new server that had already been running for years. many of my first name choices were of course taken, often by low level characters that hadn't been played in years.

so i just had to roll with it. thunderfoot is now thundafoot, karg is now kargitus. i've got about 30 chars between 2 servers so i'll just leave it there.

despite that, despite being in the game early enough to bag my fav names i'm now running on alternative spellings. yet i still don't think we should change the naming scheme in DDO.

i don't like seeing Gandalf:234762 running about, nor would i want my paladin to be called Venric:ReaperAlex. it just doesn't sit right with me.

the main alternative is to use surname for the unique name, that would look just fine. but then we'd have to type:

    /tell "thundafoot shenanigan" hi!

and mailing items would be even more prone to typos.

i guess if there had to be a change then that is the one i'd be happiest with, though they would need to back it up with a character search box everywhere you might type a players name in. eve-online does that, but then they don't split the game into different servers, so from day 1 they had to cope with a massive number of unique names.

I am all for some kind of name update. I am already sick of the "gggggaasdafa" or the "XXXnameXXX". I have some pretty cool names but I do not mind seeing a few others out there of the same name. Heck I see different spelling variants of myself from time to time as is. Personally it bugs me more that they misspell the name then the fact that I am no longer "unique".

Default Tks players for the answers!!!

Hi, tks players for all the answers , is great to see that you spend time writing their views about. Make me think too that some problems eventually may appear but still will bring more benefits than problems.

Years ago when I was still playing Pen and Paper RPG the "Master" let me choose any name I wanted.

Of course he first suggested the names described in the books that are most common to every race but you had complete "freedom" to choose the name that you wanted. By the way, RPG is a place of "freedom" and "fun"! My "Master" simply allowed us to play with other races. I played with Satyr and Azer sometimes and another players with others races. And he allowed us to play with two char when the group was small.

The problem is not the lack of creativity simply because the name that I choose for my characters is not nobody's business (even if it not pleases you, and by the way, you will has the right to do the same with the name of your chars) and what I am triyng to show to you players is that we need "freedom" to put the name we wanted. (of course following the existing rules of D & D to not have names bad words or pornographic and whatever...)

A small portion of "freedom" is enough. A simply underline will do "miracle" with the names. And yet I assure you "reactive players" that this small change will bring only benefits.

There is so much ways to fix/improvise that, so much ways... i only gave 3 and the other post's players gave others examples of how to fix that is cool too.

"So Master(turbine), give me freedom!!! Please let me choose the name I want for my char! lol"

    Players that agree with some
type of update in the name System = 7_______ Reactive Players = 4

I have nothing against evolving the system, so long as doing so does not break anything. And, Turbine's record is less then sterling on that point. The naming system is not one I'm sure I trust the Devs to gamble with at this point.

My point was and is -there are still plenty of good names out there, it just takes a bit more initiative to find them. The low-hanging and mid-range names may be largely gone, but that in no way means all the names are taken.

Why do you even want to have the same name as 10 other toons? I would prefer the devs spend their
time working on others areas of the game. Coming up with a name for our toons is our job.

I will agree on deleting the backlog of toon names that haven't been in game for years, but not
to the multiple toons with same name proposal.
