It is magically reformed as soon as the lights go out. If you could be inside the quest while it was being reset, you would see it. There is an entire kobold clan of ninja artificers whose sole purpose is to maintain the permanent mending spells on breakables across Ebberon. Were they to stop doing this, it would be total catastrophe.

Faerun has a different explaination. The reason Elminster is to busy to do anything actually important except take credit for things players do is he has to be ready to repair barrels at a moments notice. It takes much of his time and is the real reason Lolth hates him. They used to date, but his obsession with fixing things drove her a way. It is a tragic tale really.

Default Where does it all go?

What happens to all of the wood and metal left behind by adventurers who like to break crates and boxes?
What do you think the bands of Kobolds use to build those little hovels in the sewers? Or burn in their cook fires? Kobold gonna have fresh rat tonight!

What I want to know is who is storing so many boxes and barrels in the sewers and why?

    Default Debris Remains

I shall answer your question by asking one of my own:

What's the difference between "ignorance" and "apathy"?

    (A: "I don't know." and "I don't care.")

"...At least it tells us they understand our language; they're just not willing to speak to us in it. -Who knew they were French?"

All that smashed wood! All that twisted metal! Where does it go? What could it be used for?

The gnomes (who have yet to make a public appearance) are secretly hoarding the wood and the metal and taking it back to the golem factories to construct an army of wood golems and iron golems!

Will the gnomes be allies or enemies? Only time will tell...

Retired adventurers that did not save for retirement come around and make some beverage money by turning in the scrap to local blacksmiths for recycle.

"Introducing the Tinker Gnomes. The gnomes of Mystara were originally described as typical "rock gnomes": they're "excellent metalsmiths and miners" and they "love gold and gems, and have been known to make bad decisions just to obtain them." But then Dragonlance (1984-86) came along and changed D&D's perception of gnomes, turning them into tinkers and magic-machinists. Those ideas began to influence Mystara in "Earthshaker!" Though these gnomes aren't quite the crazy tinkers of Krynn, they nevertheless are the ones responsible for controlling the mighty Earthshaker machine!"

All of that is completely salvaged and 100% recycled, and then it is used to create new boxes and crates for new instances of quests. Rate 1 smash - 1 new smashable object. For players from Kobold Union.

PS. Kobold conjuration specialists are completely unrelated to this 1-1 rate.

The wood and metal is retrieved by the House Cannith clean-up crew. Where do you think the materials for making Warforged come from?

    Why I thought Everyone Knew!

The Dungeon Fairy comes along and repairs them all, then adds some random goodies inside them ready for the next set of adventurers to come along and smash!

First, that pic should be the loading screen of Breaking the Ranks. Add it to the patch.

Second, obviously, the wood melt down and is never seen again.

It's collected by the deity responsible for the inanimate object portfolio: Crateos. He collects their parts and marks down adventurers who have slain them and stolen their loot so that may suffer retribution at a later date. At least, that's what my barrel friend says.

Scrag the Kobold gathers them and sells them to House Cannith, where they are recycled into various items. Reduce, reuse, recycle.

In each dungeon there is a wormhole to Krynn. Gnomes from Krynn swarm in - rebuild all the chests and barrels, reset traps and scrape all teh goo from the walls and floors. Due to the nature of wormholes, they can do this within a time bubble which means you can leave and come back 5 minutes later and all is brand new.

What happens to the metal and wood?

Well that is quite the cycle to explain. DDO's underground echo system (as any seasoned adventure would know from Nyx) is that all kobolds (since they do remember Waterworks and hate us so much) have formed an underground guild. The sole purpose for that is to get back at the Kobold Union for making the Kobold's work for us.

As such, after every adventure, the kobolds go through all the quests steal all the wood and metal. The wood they keep to make their own armors and the metal they give it to Rust Monsters and Ooze in return these creatures would randomly appear in the same adventures (given promise by the new-secret-underground-kobold-hates-us-clan that they will find more). It is a win-win situation really; the kobold's get wood for their stuff, enemies to get back at us. The very proof to that is that quest in House K where you try to break any barrel and mobs spawn to beat you.

The messy habits of adventurers are the reason why Eberron has so many oozes. In fact, one theory holds that adventurers and oozes actually exist in a symbiotic relationship. The undesired rubbish adventurers leave behind feeds the oozes, and the oozes also eat the adventurers.

What? That's not how symbiosis works? Better tell the oozes.

The wood and metals were secretly taken by the Lord of Blades to act as spare parts for missing Bladeforged limbs, fingers, etc. on Eberron.

As for what they do at Cormyr: they are used as firewood to warn against drow incursions and attacks. The Netherese also stored as spare firewood to burn during the harsh mountainous travel from the North.

Of course they won't tell you they are using to make Golems of Mass Destruction in an undermountain factory!
