    Default Saving and Loading UI Layouts

    The recent forced LRs forced me to invest the time in learning how to save and load UI layouts.
    Resetting up my hot bars is a real pain.


    However, I've recently tried loading those saved UI Layouts on other characters, and they aren't loading as per the saved layouts.

    Not all the hotbars I had up, come up. Nor are they placed where they ought to be.

    It seems my screen resolution is the same on both characters. The UI Layouts were saved while the game was in full screen, and I've had the game in full screen when loading the Layouts.

    If I detach a bunch of hotbars, and then reload the UI settings,it gets much closer to what it was supposed to be, but some hotbars are clearly located in the wrong places.


    I've looked at the wiki, but other than how to save and load UI Layouts, it doesn't seem to mention any issues, or further tips and tricks.



    Can anyone here tell me what's going on, and how to make this beastie do what I want it to do?

    That's odd.

    I just did my LR and saved my UI layouts just beforehand.

    When I loaded them back, all were in the right place.



    How old were the saved UI layouts? Were changes made to you hotbars since the save and the recent loading?

    Only thing that comes to mind were changes made 'tween the saving and loading.

    What's "a bunch?" The exact same number? I've never had it work if the number of hotbars weren't the same, and never had it fail if they were.

    Probably 3 were out of place. Perhaps 4 on one layout, and 2 on another, but 3 was the usual number.

    I saved the layouts after LRing. If there were changes, they were very minor adjustments, and were not saved. I tried to import those layouts to characters who's layouts had never been adjusted. A couple bank toons with one bar each.

    well, whenever i load my layout then all hotbars are fused back together again....you can consider yourself lucky to have them all out even though they are not quite in the right place :/

    As near as I can tell the hotbars have to be in the correct orientation to go where they are supposed to. So if some of your hotbars are vertical instead of horizontal you will have to change them before they will go to the correct place. (And it has to be the correctly numbered hotbar not just any one)

    Yup, to make it easiest load the layout, and every one that doesn't go to right place(will generally be in middle of screen) change orientation, the load layout again, should work fine.

    Also if you have multiple computers with different resolutions(like a laptop) it can mess things, but for that save the layout on the lowest resolution and itll be usable on all, tho maybe not precisely where you want them on the higher resolution video.

    The files are saved as simple XML files that can be opened and edited with a text editor. You might be able to open one up and tinker with it to see if you can figure out what the problem is.

    Sometimes the game changes your aspect ratio, even if set to auto.

    You might alt tab, or whatever, and when you come back its 16;9, instead of the other. This *might* make hotbars load into wrong position.

    Try to hard set your aspect ratio, ui layout save then load after moveing them around

    Thanks for the suggestions folks. It's good to know that the bars don't reorient themselves, although it does make the UI saving system seem kind of halfassed if it can't even account for orientation.


    And I'll hard-set my aspect ratio. See if that makes a difference if I ever get to play again.

    frankly many things are halfassed, its just more exciting to make a ton of pointless changes than to work on old stuff that is approximately 75% working.

    It only records the locations of bars that are on screen when do the /ui layout save <filename> command.

    So, it might save:
    UndockedShortcut0_Horizontal_MarkerList
    UndockedShortcut1_Horizontal_MarkerList
    UndockedShortcut2_Vertical_MarkerList

    Then when you do /ui layout load <filename> it moves items to those locations, but only for items that are recorded in the file (so if you had bar 3 in horizontal instead of vertical, it doesn't move it; same if you had bars 4-8 separated it would just leave them where they are since they aren't mentioned in the file).

    I hand-edit my main ui layout file (which you can specify as .xml in the load command so it is easy to see formatting in your text editor), and I included locations for all 20 bars in both vertical and horizontal so it will move any I have open when I load the file.
    Author of Info Blue UI Skin (Really wish Turbine would update the skinning interface and enable all the new UI parts.)
    If you don't have an SSD, you should be using DDOPreload (fixes the slow first login issue)

    Just some things I have noticed when I use it and it may hopefully help out with some of the issues.

    I created a template which I call basic. It has 16 bars in the design.
    6 on the bottom, 4 on the top, and 3 on each side of the screen which are turned vertical.
    I learned the hard way if you do not have the same number or turn the same bars vertical before using the command /ui layout load [name] they will not go into place properly.
    So every time I create a new toon I spit up 16 bars and turn the last 6.
    Then I type /ui layout load [basic] (what I named my file) and voila!
    Everything is where I wanted it to be.

    Drove me nuts when it would not do things correctly until I figured out the number of bars and which ones were flipped horizontally or vertically mattered.

    Hope this helps.

    For the UI load to work properly, the hotbars you use must be separated from the main hotbar and they must also be oriented the same as when they were saved. Essentially the UI load function aligns the onscreen elements and not much more.

    If you don't have an SSD, you should be using DDOPreload (fixes the slow first login issue)

    That's unfortunate. So making a default layout with more than one undocked hot bar wouldn't load properly on character creation anyway.
