Default Loot team: Post U19 Eval

I'm assuming that you have seen the hundreds of posts where players are gnashing their teeth, saying "but that is kind of cool" and so on in very strong degrees.

    • How do you think the Update turned out?
    • What updates to the Update are you most anxious for?
    • What do you wish you could have done differently?
    • What are you most proud of?
    • What was your biggest disappointment?

Thank you in advance for your time and attention in responding to the foregoing. I truly feel that some candid evaluation will help your dedicated paying player base better understand the changes and what may be coming.

    Next question:

Post update, do you any change in your favorite build to play?

Completely different question, what is each Dev's favourite build to play now anyway?

Also each update seems to have a general theme for the items in it. High Road felt like everything was more of a Rogues gear setup, all the way back to the first Lordsmarch felt like a definitive Paladin idealism, obviously the 2 expansions were too varied to come to a central idea (though it does feel like a tempest ranger idea. More dual wield than previously done?)

I really do enjoy it. Each Update just feels like it's catering just a touch more toward one class.

The one question I have is:

What were you trying to accomplish with this?

Of course, that question should be followed up with:
    Where is this game heading?

What do you perceive to be the player community's response to this update, and does that match your goals in any way?

Wow, with all of the formatting on "trying" I am going to assume you are just pointing out that you don't expect a reply... If it was something snarky beyond that, my questions were looking for honest feedback, some insights, etc.

Unfortunately the elusive DDO Dev only shows itself 2 weeks before an update. Whilst the community reps are nowhere to be found

"expansion" - you forgot the quotes.

Quests are great, loot is meh, EGH and MoTU were much better.

I see what HAS been done, I see the after effect, I don't need to anyone to give me an assessment on that, I have already gauged it, measured it, and pretty much, could care less what the devs think of what they did, as it will not change my opinion of it.

Much in the same way the people in NW would tell me how Close to the Lore and Game Neverwinter was, and I looked at it and was like "Nope, this is not DnD to me" and really, some community specialist telling me that it is, will not suddenly change my mind on that matter.

However, in this case, unlike with other things, I wonder what they were trying to do with this, what the the motive that moved them to make these changes.

See, in the case of Ghostbane, the move was simple, there was mention that undead were too complex for some people to figure out how to fight, so they consolidated the two effects, of Ghost Touch and Undead Bane into one easy to understand Suffix, and dispensed that like candy to players, hoping that would help the new people figure it all out.

Ok, that's handy and makes sense why they did it. and I thought it was a nifty effect all things said and done.

Personally as an "older "player, only here with the F2P move, a large part of the appeal of DDO was in fact the DR of mobs, that Skeletions took less damage from slash/pierce, and Zombies took less damage from blunt made me feel like I was playing a DnD game. Ghost being incorporial, was another feature. Would I have liked Ghostbane when I stated, as opposed to needing to get out my +1 Ghost Touch Dwarf Axe of Stunning +1, because that was the only ghost touch weapon I had.. Yah.. I would have enjoyed the Ghostbane effect when I was new.

In that regard, I understand and respect their motive to make this change, it's not simply arbitrary, it gives direction to their actions, and shows they are not just doing stuff to do stuff with no real long term thought behind it as to how it will affect the game for it's players of all styles.

Ok, with that put out, and I understand and respect their reasoning, that does not change the fact that Ghostbane hurts named items like "Eternal Rest", in fact, since Ghostbane scales, it hurts a lot of the once very popular named "Undead Beaters", so, the right thing for them to do at that point would have been to then go through all the named gear that was known to be "Undead Beaters" that had Ghost Touch and Undead Bane, and revamp them a bit to make them more desirable, bring them up to speed to the rest of the game, and give the players that ground out those items, a means to trade in the old one for the new one.

    So yes.

With these changes, I am sincerely wondering, What were they TRYING to do here, because there is no lack in seeing what they actually did.

One thing I will say. I am really liking how some named items (thinking First Blood and Skirmisher's Bracers) seem to have random gen effects on them, but have much more powerful versions of them. I've yet to see a random gen item with higher than doublestrike 6%, and the EN version of First blood has 13%. The Bracers I have to admit are an extremely smexy item with their 8%. Makes my rogue quite happy.

As someone who defended the loot design up to U17 (except for FoT gear which was bad), I'm shock at how awful the gear situation is now.

Pointless named loot, extremely limited variety in random loot (yeah there's some good stuff, but it's all so common you can basically pick it up from the pawn brokers, even the best combs are nearly worthless), and continued degeneration of reasons to run raids (essentially none for casters, and just CitW weapons and FoT comms).

The end game feels "smaller" than any point that I've played this game (3.5 years), and it's all because of the gawd awful loot design. It's kind of depressing considering how many really fun epic quests there are.

Pre U19 we had lots of random items with evocative names and unique, interesting effects.

    Annihilating.
    Radiance.
    ... of a thousand suns
    Meteoric
    ... of Blasphemy
    ... of Obscenity

Now we have 'Shock IV'. Yes I can accept that in power, that's comparable to the old Dynamo (arguably it's a little stronger although it depends on the target), but it is nowhere near as cool as A HUGE LIGHTNING BOLT COMING FROM THE SKY and a big '644' appearing on screen.
    I don't have a zerging problem.

    I'm zerging. That's YOUR problem.

This thread doesn't appear to be a legitimate inquiry to a dev, but instead appears to be a backhanded way to try to get a dev to make a statement that could then be used to fuel arguments or criticism. Therefore, it's now closed.
