this vague guide pales in comparison to the experience in game

not only could houses be placed anywhere on the server within limits you could place almost unlimited items inside your house.

I know that someone was very derogative towards Minecraft players, and I just want to say, they are the legions of coders that are going to help the developers fix this badly wrenched game. . .the devs can only do so much as the game gets larger, more eyes and more hands are GOING to be needed. . .they are the torch runners that are going to help keep this game running and functional!!

So, if you are not a fan of this game long term. . .then yeah, try to attract the Warcraft crowd and watch this game die a fiery death. . .from my experience, the players of Warcraft know only how to hack the game to create their own private servers to play the game for free.

I am not saying that does not require experience. . .the problem is that with access to multiple zones and tiered branches, I would rather have a cadre of people that understand permissions and like to design things. . .

Most Warcraft players just want to know enough information to get it for free. . .

So, if you don't want the long-term health of this game to mean anything then yeah. . .you could ignore Housing. . .

But if anyone feels that way, then THEY are the one that doesn't need to be here. . .in DDO, lots of loot is BtC. . .I can think of no better segway to break them of the hoarding habit than an engaging game where you don't always get to transfer gear from character to character. . .if they aren't the kind of talent that DDO can rely on. . .then they will at least purchase all the Shared Bank space they can hold. . .simply out of habit. . .and we can wish them a fond farewell.

Either way, Housing should serve the entire player-base. . .not my ideas. . .it just makes sense to use a place that no one cares about. . .I don't even think that it would break the Teleport spell if they used Portable Hole, they could always tie it to the Favor reward for the Twelve that we don't have. . .and there is always Greater Teleport to get around with.

No. Fix what's broken, that's where development time should be going.

who ever said no one cares about the Portable Hole its the best place to go to gear up with arcane scrolls without traveling to every shop in the land.

what your saying is you don't care about Portable Hole.

and what the majority here are saying is they don't care about housing UNLESS it provides storage.

the long term health of this game does not hinge on housing

    Default Impact Minimization

I did not say that no ones cares about the Portable Hole. . .you missed the point or only half-read the post.

I said that no one would mind if the Portable Hole was unavailable due to development bugs because they could very easily shift the inventory that is sold in the Portable Hole to another vendor and nothing would be lost. My point was the impact was minimized.

There are existing scroll vendors. . .the point is, what happens when they lose guild ship functionality trying to implement Housing. . .is not gonna be as nice as not having access to scrolls from a centralized location.

The best place to keep development time to a minimum would be the Portable Hole. . .it is already linked to public transportation via Teleport spell, it already has a maiilbox, spirit binder, barkeep, a couple trainers, and General/Potion/Scroll Vendors.

The Portable Hole also already has it's own chat channel. . .and is not readily accessible to new players.

I am not sure how I feel about the last two points though. Does Housing need to be readily accessible to new players or require it's own chat channel? I strongly believe to keep cost down with code refactoring though. . .

By continuously improving the design of code, we make it easier and easier to work with. This is in sharp contrast to what typically happens: little refactoring and a great deal of attention paid to expediently adding new features. If you get into the hygienic habit of refactoring continuously, you'll find that it is easier to extend and maintain code.
    —Joshua Kerievsky, Refactoring to Patterns

I think it would be easier to start with the existing Portable Hole code and in the beginning just adapt the Clan Gnashtooth Kobold Shaman Contract (maybe with different skin) to be able to interact with your Housing.

The Portable Hole Housing would just be the "introductory" option. . .each one could be a re-work of instances that already exist! That way people have multiple choices for Housing. . .

For additional amenity slots for Housing like the Castle from "Storm the Beaches", or the Mansion from Haunted Halls of Eveningstar, that is where you could get additional amenity slots and add your creature companions into the mix of hirelings/other contracts that you might possess.

I will reference physical housing in the next post. . .

While I wouldn't be opposed to housing, your concept is far, far more complicated than it should be.

I am going to say I'd rather more content, races, classes (in that order) than housing.

    Default Physical Housing

In reference to physical housing, I would absolutely like to have Housing in King's Forest and raid the Underdark but aren't there physical limits on how many Houses you can place there?

My point is, UO seemed like they had a different amount of landmass. . .an update in 2000 doubled the size of the world and then in 2003, they introduced housing. The explorer areas are definitely getting bigger in DDO. . .but not sure everyone would be able to have a House. . .demand for a very few slots would certainly drive up the price. . .but why would someone run all the way through an Explorer area to reach their House?

I still advocate adding new quests/raids close to existing adventure packs/expansion portals that are easily accessible from Housing (obviously, you still need to own the pack).

We need to challenge Lolth on another battlefield. . .it's one thing to trounce someone when they are trying to settle down for an evening snack. . .it's another to take her out back in the middle of the night and beat her on her back porch. . .if we had Housing in King's Forest to facilitate an Underdark raid that would work for me as well. . .

You still banging on about this? Go play LOTRO, it has what you're asking for, or as close to it as you're going to get.

Nobody is buying the development time sink that you're selling. We'll all stick with Guildships.

Not selling anything, once again. . .we have been asked to decide what we want, and how can we possibly decide till we hear from Turbine in the matter. . .

There are so many possible iterations it could take. . .I am creating ideas as to how housing MIGHT work. . .and I will continue to do so until we hear from Turbine about what Housing would be intended to look like.

You are free to decide what YOU think Turbine means by Housing. . .again, we aren't able to decide between a mystery meat and pork unless we know that the other choice is chicken OR steak.

They want us to decide here, in post #24:

    http://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread...06#post5066206

They said, and I quote, "We have to choose where to invest, so if raids are really the thing and housing is useless let us know. Raids get a lot of forum traffic but not necessarily the player usage."

    Producer Rowan

I would like to ask Producer Rowan how we could POSSIBLY decide without knowing what they propose to do FOR housing. . .information is great, but not when you put the cart before the horse. . .I will continue to throw out ideas. . .the next one has to do with Breakables that I am still formulating until they decide to give us more info. . .again, unless they can do Housing better than Warcraft and Neverwinter, I wouldn't even bother. . .if they don't think they can garner support from these or other players (like Minecraft) with Housing then they shouldn't even bother.

It's cheaper to buy character slots and just create some mules. . .we don't need an "inventory tax". . .though I agree that inventory should BE a part of housing. . .but only as they add other functionality. . .it should not be the only thing. . .take crafting up to 200-250 and let us craft our OWN scrolls from the Portable Hole. . .tell those vendors they aren't needed anymore and that the Coin Lords/House K have united with the Tower of the Twelve. . .to provide pocket dimensions to everyone. . .or perhaps they built outposts beyond the forward area of King's Forest. . .so they have a staging area to ravage the Underdark in a raid against Lolth again. . .perhaps it will not be so easy with the help of Shar and some Shadows. . .

I am sorry but we don't need Raids, we have them already and some are very rarely (if never) run anymore. . .we need a loot update on existing raid gear. . .then add another raid after level cap is increased to 30. . .take the raid items that got heroic commendations and add the final tier of upgrades at the same time as level cap increase.

    *** are you talking about?

You want houses to clutter up Kings forest? NO FREAKING WAY!

    NO!

That and your idea to allow people to to visit other homes would mean turning the Forest into a public area.

    Again, NO FREAKING WAY!

Unless you want to limit visitors to your group only, then what is the point?

There will be NO homes in a landscape for players.

You want to turn this instance based game into some other game.

    Go play that other game.

You keep saying that like this is going to happen.

As you can read, or maybe not, people do NOT want housing - they want storage.

Since they may want to know what we think, as you can read, housing is in a vast minority. They will listen to the majority - that means no player housing.

If you don't understand the need for extra inventory space to deal with BTC items on characters then you're not qualified to voice an opinion on anything.

    Imma keep it simple.

You know that quest The Church and the Cult? I'd like that first. Also when bringing that back- I'd like the caveat that NO OTHER QUESTS BE SHUT DOWN (a la Baudry's Chain).
I'd like to not have to get stuck on ladders. I'd like for Garos to not be bugged half the time. I'd like Combat Archery to actually work. I'd like my hirelings to not get stuck.

I'd like Expansion Packs to INCLUDE more content (ie Raids).
    Oh yeah- and fix raids.

All that before housing. I have my ship- she's good enough for me.

Just goes to further prove this person is not playing the same game that the rest of us are.

I cannot honestly believe he posted that nobody would care if the Hole was shut down. Amazing.

After that bold statement, IMO, he is not qualified to speak for any of us or have a clue on what the rest of us want. Cannot even grasp the fact we do not want housing.

This has now just become a laugh.

Considering that Producer Rowan has already indicated that Raids get plenty of forum traffic (probably because they are Free to VIPs), people that would rather not spend money for Housing will obviously choose Raids. . .people that want Raids are in the vocal minority because they feel slighted by the last expansion that they had to pay for. . .

Rightly so, but I for one would rather hear more info before I decide. . .I like to keep an open mind.

I would like to hear more information about Housing. . .does any find harm in hearing the details before we decide??

Or are we afraid that public opinion might sway when we actually hear the proposal??

I did NOT claim that no one would mind that the Hole was shut down. . .not what I said at all.

I think you need to reread post #65 again.

I said that the impact would be minimal. . .hence the title of the post. . .Impact Minimization. . .you need to read the first line apparently.

The scrolls can VERY easily be shifted to any of the other vendors. . .are you saying for some reason that the vendors in the Portable Hole are somehow special and that their wares could NOT be sold anywhere else??

They are not sold anywhere else so it would be easy to find in the code base. . .they are the only ones listed in relation to vendors and not as loot. . .they can JUST as easily move them from one vendor to another scroll vendor, as there are several. . .

In the meantime, move the Teleport/Greater locations to somewhere else needed. . .I am sure if you think, you could come up with many. . .the least being House C. . .

*shrug* Some of us do want housing. But other then that, I agree 100% with you.
(and I wouldn't mind for the house to be in a wilderniss area either; several of them already have houses that are just decoration atm. Others might want to live in GH, or the marketplace, or even Korthos. This would not clutter up the area anymore than all the hundreds of guild ships clutter up the sky, just 1 door leading to various instances same as with the door to the guild ships.)

In fact, I am not the OP, I am just asking for details about a proposal that Producer Rowan has put forth. . .I am throwing my ideas out so that the devs have more fuel for the fire. . .

I just want to hear what they propose. . .so in essence. . .if you think the Housing idea is bad. . .you should turn to the devs. . .I am just putting forth my ideas for something THEY suggested. . .never have I posted on Housing before the Devs mentioned it. . .

I am only the person who created the thread. . .not the OP. . .don't you find it interesting that devs jump into threads often but just as quickly jump out and are silent. . .I would be willing to guess it is because of negative people that accuse the OP as having some secret agenda to ruin the game. . .you really think that is what I am trying to accomplish. . .that is a little disconcerting. . .lol
