half-orc barbarian - wait for new ravager prestige.
two handed weapon+power attack, cleave, critical....
    or
    human
    dwarf
fighter is good if you wanna specialize in one weapon (more dmg), + two weapon fighting, oversized t.w.f.

a 28 point dwarven barbarian as laid out above is the perfect point to start. it's clean and simple and doesn't need any investment to shine. it will work great at end game just as it will all the way through.

sure you can get better, you can pay for the half orc class for more raw strength (also comes bundled with VIP). or you can unlock 32 point builds to boost your secondary stats. but if you want to start playing today with a character that will still be pulling its weight years into the game when you have every other fancy option unlocked then a dwarf barbarian is a solid bet.

if you really don't want to be a dwarf then swap it for any other race. yes, even a halfling (penalty to strength) or an elf (penalty to constitution) will still work. why? because when you have butt-loads of STR and CON a few points here or there aren't going to stop a barbarian from kicking ass and chewing bubble gum in an era that doesn't have bubble gum (so you might not be able to do any chewing, but that will just free up time for more of the kicking). follow the build above and you really can't go wrong.

18/2 Druid/Monk - Race Human,H-Elf, H-Orc. H-Orc if you have gear/TR'ing into the class. If from scratch, I would go H-Elf (Rogue Dilly)/Human in that order.

"The Juggernaut" (16/2/2 Artificer/Monk/Ranger WF) - Not sure how the build makes it past the enhancement pass/ED pass (i.e Update 19). It's strength is mostly in ED's and there is not as much discussion about that

Most of the "current" melee/hybrid builds are dieing in approx. a month thanks to the enhancement pass. Probably the best pure melee build I have seen was the 12/7/1 Monk/Druid/Rogue (or Artificer) (Sorry forgot race) but that build died thanks to the versatility of "Juggy." There is another melee build but I have not read up on it, or can quantify it, 8/8/6 or some such thing.

On Lama I had a lot of success with a WF 15 Dru/3 Clr/2 Fig split, Fire Elemental form, THF with LD cleaves twisted into FotW. But, really, anything with enough Druid levels to get Heal, plus THF/Cleave enhancements, is going to be more or less the same. Beguile is going to be a gamechanger, and Druid gives you self heals, buffs, and DOTs to complement your melee DPS.
