    Default Shadar-Kai Tattoo Design Contest

We're pleased to announce a brand new contest for players of Dungeons & Dragons Online; the DDO "Shadar Kai Tattoo Design Contest"!

DDO fans, it's time to show us your artistic and creative skills: we’re giving you the opportunity to submit your very own design for a facial tattoo which could be taken and implemented into the game as a character creation appearance option for the new Shadar Kai Iconics in the Shadowfell Conspiracy Expansion.

Below you can find the design template to use when creating your unique design. Please note, you only need to complete the design box to complete a successful entry. The character portrait angles are there for additional details on how your design would layout on the face, if you wish to provide that, to help our judges understand your vision!

Click here to download the official design template!

Our panel of judges includes DDO developers and members of the Wizards of the Coast team, such as:
    • Erik “Glin” Boyer, Senior DDO Producer
    • Dan Haard, DDO Lead Artist
    • Dan Gelon, Senior Art Director at Wizards of the Coast
    • Jon Schindehette, Senior Creative Director at Wizards of the Coast

The valid areas of customization on the character’s face include:
    • Forehead below the hairline
    • Eye and nose region, excluding the eyeball
    • Chin region above the neck, excluding the lips
    • Cheek area forward of the ears
    • Color of the design (must be a single color, and 100% opaque)

For some inspiration to guide your creations, please see some of the existing Shadar Kai designs currently planned for Shadowfell Conspiracy.

In addition to having your tattoo design immortalized in the live game, the winning entry will also receive a Shadowfell Conspiracy skinned ORIGIN 800D PC (valued at $3,888.74), a Lifetime subscription to DDO, and a unique community forum title of “Master of Pain”. Two runners up will also be awarded a Lifetime subscription to DDO and community forum title of “Acolyte of Pain”.

Good luck and we look forward to seeing your designs!

An interesting idea, and one I would have probably entered.

Except of course; for those in the United States only.

USA only SIGH. Would have been nice to include all your other players that play this game. Even if it was points codes.

Yeah unfortunately since it involves importing a piece of art directly into the game, the legal peeps were far more picky =/

It is interesting how companies in other countries seem to find ways to purchase the rights to artwork from developers in other countries

    I know, I know - you can't.

Just saying - others can, and do. It's kind sad - so many of us wanted a way to help to develop our favorite game. And your legal department has decided that no no, can't do that. Americans only; they must think there is no legal way to purchase intellectual property from any one other than americans.

This is a very disappointing restriction when you consider that DDO is a game played by people from all over the world.

How a commercial entity can obtain and use third-party artistic works for practically zero cost:
    1. Run an art competition.
    2. Put the following in the terms and conditions:

The terms could be limited to participation only granting a license for use in the context of this specific competition, rather than this brazen all-your-entries-are-belong-to-us attitude so prevalent in such corporate "competitions". They could, if there were the will.

I'm not sure that's even necessary, given the "royalty-free, non-exclusive, perpetual, worldwide license" granted by merely submitting an entry...

Yeah, I suspect this kind of land-grab wouldn't fly in a lot of the rest of the world.

Is it possible to get the screenshots of the character on the design template with no facial markings to begin with?

Also, I didn't see anything about only 1 entry per person.

    Are multiple entries allowed?

Kinda sad/upset/p.o.'d that it's for americans only. I'd be willing to bet that there are many of us in other countries that could design some kick ass tattoos for this contest. Get the legal department back on it. They must be able to figure out a way that others can enter. Please?

    Thumbs down US-only???? Thats discrimination!

Another sad day for DDO. I would have totally loved to participate even without any of those prizes! (Well the forum title would surely be awesome^^) I would also don't care about any right of that tattoo design ... ya do with it what you want ... If I see it anywhere I still know that I created it ... but sadly ... Turbine refuses to accept my ideas *sigh* ...

Would there maybe be the possibility to create a second contest for everyone NOT living in the US? Maybe without monetary rewards? (of what I remember those are the ones creating problems ... not the participation itself) Or maybe with just a forum title as reward? Would totally love to give it a try ...

Then get International laws changed so you can participate.

Until then even Turbine has to follow them.

And by the way, Turbine is NOT discriminating - they are just following the laws put down. Go take your discrimination BS to the people that wrote such laws, not the ones that have to follow them.

Are you a lawyer? I've seen many competition from an USA based company with international participation (well, some exceptions, of course), as an example:

    http://www.sketchup.com/intl/en/comp...own/rules.html

So google can do an international competition, so an international competition can be done, so...

How about a runner up prize where your artwork will be added to the game, no financial reward, non us citizens are allowed to enter.

TP don't have real world value though, so you could always add some of them to the runner up too?

It's a shame that I, as a US citizen over the age of 18, have absolutely no interest in entering this contest (for a multitude of reasons) but there are likely dozens of others who live abroad that meet the age requirement who would absolutely love to give this contest a shot.

Now that forum names are tied to in-game accounts you can't proxy for someone. Sad days.

No, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night....

Contest law varies even more between different countries. If you were to open up a contest to people all over the world, you would have to research the law in every single country on earth, to avoid getting yourself in legal trouble. For a typical promotional contest, this is just too much work. The legal fees for the required research would be much more than the payoff of the promotion. Additionally, there are some problematic legal questions inherent in any international contest. For example, if something were to go wrong, -- say, the prize was lost in shipping -- what court would the contest winner go to? It would be a very tough legal question just figuring out who had jurisdiction.

What it comes down to is that it's just too much work for a company to find out how to cover themselves, legally, in multiple countries and in all states. After all, the typical rules and regulations of a contest running only in the United States take up 20 or so paragraphs. Just think how small a company would have to make the print to cover itself internationally!

So, is it worth it for Turbine to research the law on every country on Earth?

    No.

Sucks for our International players for sure. But that is the way the world works. Now if Turbine had the financial resources of Google as per your example, then it might not be. Not to mention, the prize in your example is for a school district and NOT for an individual.

Turbine is just doing what is in their best interest, legally.

That's a fun idea.... too bad I'm not allowed to participate, like the majority of the world.
