    Default Need archer build a dummy can follow

    Hello all, I am an old guy, 50's, who plays with my family. My wife, 2 sons and daughter all play. We all started about a month ago and are all having fun. I was trying to figure out arcane archer but since I am new I keep getting feats and stuff messed up. We are all VIP and are about to buy the 32 point build so I wanna get the build right. I really liked Sithali but its too complicated for my old brain. I will just go 20 lvls of ranger if that is easier. I know its asking a lot but if someone can tell me where to put everything at each lvl I will GREATLY appreciate it. Play style, pulling agro, and such means very little to me since I only party with the family, we tick each other off all the time...part of the fun. Thanks heaps in advance.

    I would personally stay away from that build. I will try to get the character planner up and do two builds, a basic 20 Human Ranger build and a more advanced 12/6/2 Build. But need to eat dinner and others may provide links/builds before I am done spending time with the family.

    There is nothing wrong with tihocan's build and for a person who plays exclusively with their family and friends it is probably a great introduction to arcane archer. The information tihocan presents is a little bit busy because it tries to cover all of the race choices -- something that might be a bit over-the-top for Dad -- but the build itself is very serviceable (again, especially in a family setting where a person knows they have a group to support them).

    Too often people try to give advice to new players without considering that player's circumstances. Dad laid it out pretty clearly in his post and, IMO, a simple, straight-forward build is precisely the prescription being asked for.

    Concerns like best weapon choice or gear selection -- even issues like monk splashing for 10K stars -- are unnecessary complications. All that is needed is a build that gets the core feats in a timely way so that the benefits of arcane archer can contribute to the family group's dungeoning success.

    IMO tihocan's build achieves that.

    Anyways, a couple reasons for why I did what I did.
    • Starting Wisdom 8. 8 (base) + 6 (item) = 14; you are able to cast all spells. Add a +2 Wisdom tome along the way and you have more flexibility. You are grouping with others so your ability to cast/not cast should not effect the group/family.
    • All level ups into STR. With gear, you should not have a "to-hit" issue especially past 20.
    • Level 15 amd 18 Feats could be changed for Dragon Marks of Passage for 2/Day DD ability. Not needed but it is an option.
    • Skill ups - Other than UMD and Spot there really isn't anything great. Sneak and Hide are nice. Jump skill should cap with gear and spell but I placed 5 points into anyways. Balance is a skill I like, if I have points to spare. You can place points into Haggle over Jump. No need for concentration unless you do a lot of scroll casting during combat.
    • If they ever get the Feat fixed, 18 Dex (base) + 3 (tome) will give you +1[W] to weapons at 21+. That is if they ever get the Feat fixed.
    • Human Versatility for +damage vs. Orange(+) NPC's or heavy group of casters
    • No capstone. The increase in attack speed/DPS was really horrible, even for 2 AP points. You can take it if you like though. Possible they fixed it and I missed the post also.
    • If you go any other race, you lose one feat. Move Toughness from level 1 to 12 and drop Quicken.
    • Maximize is for your healing spells so they are not so anemic but can take at 24 if you go with Dragonmarks.
    • With the enhancement pass, I know one thing they were doing was trying to make Dex builds more viable. Therefore, this build is for 18.2 update and no future update

    Why I did what I did (and probably made a few mistakes along the way )
    • +4 level-ups in Wisdom.
    • You need one level-up into Dex to qualify for IPS; 16 Dex (Base) + 2 (Tome @ 7/8) + 1 (Level up @ 12) by level 15. +3 Tome by level 15 works also but trying to be realistic.
    • Technically you could get to 21 Dex with this build if they ever fixed "the feat" for the extra +1[w] damage but I didn't plan on you finding/acquiring a +4 Dex tome.
    • You can take Artificer 1 & 2 at the beginning instead of 1 & 20. After second thought, I would probably do 1 & 2.
    • My Enhancement path is "borked" and I know it. Thankfully they can be reset.
    • Feat selection is also more restrictive. Others may be able to offer different suggestions but this is a basic build path.
    • You will have to melee to build Ki for 10k Stars. Monksher Build for the blue print for this build. I remember there being a 32 pt. build with this split (my posting)but couldn't find the specific one I was looking for. Once you build ED's though (w/twists) this is no longer true (that you have to melee).
    • You can also use 2 fighter vs. Artificer; You gain a feat but <meh> and haste boost Decide if you want Haste Boost x 5 or UMD (Very nice to have) and Open Lock capabilities (Very minor). Honestly most people choose the 2 Fighter, especially with 34 and 36 pt. builds. Just want you to know your options.
    • This is definitely a more complex build which also requires Tomes but at least you have both end's of the spectrum for choices. And I prefer choices.

    Bare in mind with the coming Enhancement pass, a lot of what makes that 12/6/2 'Monkcher' build work so well will be changed. Stick to the pure 20 Ranger if you don't expect to cap a character within the next month (certainly sounds like you wont) as it is a far more futureproof build, aswell as being easier to follow. What it falls shorter on in power now you won't notice, but come the Enhancement pass, it will get stronger as the Monkcher gets hit with the nerf bat.

    Yeah this is a bad time to be learning a new class...just as you finally 'get it', they're going to change the whole game.

    That being said, you probably wont get to L16 playing casually, let alone L20....so you can just go full Ranger still, and once the EP hits, you can ask what to do with the final 5-6 levels, since a pure Ranger probably wont be as good as a multiclass splash.

    Its a really bad time to be starting a new character - I cant really stress that enough. Post-EP you're probably going to want to go with a full-dex Elf archer, but pre-EP that's a seriously gimpy build, and its not quite close enough yet where you can just "tough it out" till it hits...and you might not be able to change your race, once it does hit.

    Just wanted to add that as a VIP you don't have to buy 32pt build, you can unlock it with favor which doens't take too long.
    Also, I went with Arcane Archer, which confused me at first too, but using DDO wiki was a big help. Basically tells you what
    the requirments are.
