    Default Spell Penetration Guide

    The other day someone asked me about spell penetration and asked how to increase it. So I though I'd put this out there. I've been sick for the last week so my apologies to them for the delay.

    ------------------------

    What is Spell Penetration? A Spell Penetration check is made any time a spell is cast on a target that has Spell Resistance. If the spell resistance is higher than the spell penetration then the spell will have no effect and players will see a blue shield appear over the target.

    Once spell resistance has been bypassed the target still gets to make their normal save against the spell if there is any.

    Spell penetration items have a level qualifier. For example the Epic Torc of Prince Raiyum-de II has Greater Spell Penetration VIII. This means the Epic Torc gives +3 to spell penetration checks to all spells level eight and lower.

    This guide has expanded to include raising the caster level and some spell DC's which effectively increase a caster's spell penetration. While I did not include all items that increase spell DC's, I did include Spell Focus Mastery which increases DC's for all schools.


    Spell Penetration Formula
    Caster level + feats + enhancements + items + past life (if any)


    Minor Spell Penetration gives +1 to spell penetration checks
    Spell Penetration gives +2 to spell penetration checks
    Greater Spell Penetration gives +3 to spell penetration checks

    Description: Grants +2 to spell penetration

    Sorcerer Savant
    Description: Sorcerer Savant raises your caster level which effectively raises your spell penetration. Sorcerer Savants get +2 to their caster level for each rank of Savant they take for a total of +6 to their spell levels in their school. However, none of the Savant school spells are affected by spell penetration that I am aware of.

    Stormreaver's Napkin
    Description: Spell Focus Mastery +1
    Location: Possible end chest reward in The Reaver's Fate. Can also be found in the 20th rewards list.

    Mindfury Symbiont
    Description: Spell Focus Mastery +1
    Location: Possible end chest reward in In The Flesh

    Magewright's Expertise set
    Description: Spell Focus Mastery +1
    Location: (1) The magewright's Cloak can be found in the end chest of Power Play
    Location: (2) The magewright's Spectables can be found in Stellite's Chest in the House Cannith Manufactury

    Epic Staff of Inner Sight
    Description: Spell Focus Mastery +2
    Location: Epic version of the Staff of Inner Sight found in Chains of Flame



    Stacking
    - The spell penetration and greater spell penetration feats stack with each other.
    - Spell penetration items stack with feats.
    - Spell penetration enhancements stack with feats and items.
    - Spell penetration items do not stack. The highest value is used for the spell level you are casting.
    - The Favored Soul past lives grant +1 for each life and can only be stacked a maximum of three times for a total of +3 to spell penetration.
    - The Wizard past lives grant +2 for each life and can only be stacked a maximum of three times for a total of +6 to spell penetration.
    - The Favored Soul and Wizard past lives will stack with each other for a maximum total of +9 to spell penetration after three of each past life has been taken.
    - Scholar of the Twelve spell penetration bonus does not stack with any other spell penetration items
    - Max int, Sp

    Also, this last bit seems a bit confusing might want to rewrite it for better comprehension. Maybe split the two class PLs up and note that you get +1 (max of +3) from each FvS PL, +2 (max of +6) for each Wizard PL, and that they stack with each other.

    so, just out of curiousity i decided to calc MAX Spell pen

    lvl 20 elf wiz: 22+4+9+7+3=43

    22 CL (arcane augmentation IX)

    04 both spell pen feats

    09 3x FVS pl, 3x Wiz pl

    07 Spell pen enhancements, elven arcanum enhancements

    03 Greater spell pen item

    = 45

    Also note that Arcane Augmentation items will increase your spell penetration, for Arcane spells.

    Here is screenshotted proof of the spell penetration increase granted by the Arcane Augmentation IX on the Epic Staff of Arcane Power.


    Also note that there is the named Robe of the Magi, and there are also random lootgen Robe of the Magi items. They have the same name, but vastly different effects.

    arcane augmentation is an item effect, not an enhancement.

    IIRC, Savant PrE for sorcs also boosts CL, which would also increase spell pen for those types of spells (FtS comes to mind for a Earth Savant)

    Sortof yes. I fixed up the enhancements to change it to sorcerer savant .and also added Angel of Vengeance since it lowers spell resistance.

    I added it thanks, although as we all know it's mostly useless Perhaps some new characters that lack gear can take advantage of it however.

    Not really a "spell pen raiser", but I think you should mention Shattermantle as a way for the party members to help reducing the enemy SR (thus, indirectly giving a +3/6 Spell Pen to all casters on party).

    Good point, since I included the Aura of Menace earlier which is a debuff to SR then there is no reason not to include shattermantle. It's added now thanks.

    I assume you're talking about this thread. It's a good resource but I think it might discourage some people because it mostly talks about Wizards. I'm glad to link to it here, but I'm going to leave it off the guide.

    Thanks again to everyone who helped me to fix up the guide and pointed out missing items and mistakes (copy/paste = bad!).

    Yes they are.

    Also note that I need to update this guide and others with new items, Epic feats and Epic Destiny stuff as well. I'll get to it as soon as I have time which is quite limited lately.
