    I've been critical of the cosmetic pet system, as something incompatible with D&D, from the beginning. D&D has a perfectly good summons, companion, and familiar systems that could have been expanded to provide functional and legitimate "pets" in the game. But they didn't go that way. They've gone with a useless, cosmetic, freak show that has turned the game into a virtual petting zoo.

    And how many of these pet do you own?
    The better question would be about how many I've bought. The answer is Zero.

    If I could turn the whole system OFF I would.

    Default Flying cats and Owlbears

    I have to say that I love my flying cat. He's a lot of fun and when you make them pounce, the party notices the "RAWR". I finished a CITW the other day and half the party had their cats out making a racket while Anna went on and on with Lolth. Fun stuff, although Mr.Whyskers has received a quite few death threats from some of my guildies. They are also a good way to be recognized while playing different characters because the companions stay the same on all of your toons.

    Yeah it's still wrong even with the disclaimer. The people who create pets are the same people who create:

    3d Mesh
    Textures
    Skins
    Animations
    Sounds

    Thus are pretty much 100% required for anything that you can see, hear and/or that moves within the game.

    That said; rest easy knowing that most of the pets are built on the same basic mesh and animations, the people who made the cat skin and put it on the same mesh as the Imp/Dragon, and the Owlbear that got put on the bear mesh, with a few vertices pulled to change the head shape; are NOT fixing bugs, nor are they coding new cosmetic systems, when they aren't being horribly distracted by pointless pet production

    Yeah gotta say i love those posts, MMO people must be really omnipotent i mean if the guys didn't work on textures they'd definately be out there fixing bugs of the gamecode and when they're done with that they'd actually get back to writing quests cause that's what they were hired for in the first place.
    Hell if i was that good i wouldn't work for the meager salary they probably get paid lol.

    Even better are the people that think the whole art department should be fired and new coders hired cause bugs need to be fixed and when the bugs are fixed you can just fire the coders rehire some art people right ? I mean ithey're only robots anyways.

    Nice dodge of my very simple question. I did not ask how many you bought, I asked how many you own. By the failure to answer that, leads one to think that you do in fact own some of these very same pets you are so against being in game.

    And I particularly do not care for parts of them myself, but I will not begrudge those that do like them and support the game I also like to play. The parts I do not care for are the things like top hats and wizard hats on the pets, that ruins it for me. That is over the top for me. I did want the Chaos beholder, for full disclosure, and did what I had to to acquire it. But I will not 'buy' a pet, but will work for one if it one that I happen to like.

    Well care to elaborate how the pet system, which nearly every game has now since they are pretty popular, impacts your gameplay negatively ?
    I mean what exactly do they do that bothers you to such an extent ?
    I hardly notice them being there in the first place.

    Default Canon, Old School D&D

    It's been said many times, but owlbears and tressyms are D&D icons. (Well, tressyms are more of a Forgotten Realms icon, but you get the picture.) Ever since they brought in Eveningstar I've been wondering when the tressyms would show up since in the Realms the flying cats are FROM Eveningstar. It's been in it's lore since... well at least 2nd ed (probably even 1rst) and it felt kinda strange without them.
    And owlbears, they're as iconic to D&D as gelatinous cubes. They've been a core 'animal' in the setting since the early days, probably before you were even born. I mean, I've been playing D&D for over 22 years now and have come to view some of these creatures as so ingrained with the setting that it made me so happy and thrilled to finally see them around. It was... well bringing D&D more to life by having them.

    So if you want to play Dungeons & Dragons Online you shouldn't really complain when they bring out D&D creatures which makes the people who came to play D&D happy. It's kind of like complaining because there are dragons in Dungeons & Dragons. O.o If anything I'm hoping that it makes you happy that they are working hard to bring us iconic creatures like owlbears and tressyms since it's letting you experience the setting that the MMO is based after. It's giving you more of a feel for Dungeons & Dragons and it's interesting creatures. ^_^

    I would hazard a guess that, because people do buy these pets, pigs will fly before they remove them . . .hey, wait a minute. . .I want my flying pig!

    Default 2nd ed Tressym

    I noticed that most people are saying 'owlbears are classic D&D' and noting that the 'flying cats are cute' without really knowing what the tressyms are.

    Sooo, here is the description of them from the 2nd ed Monster Manual


    Tressym are beautiful, fluffy, winged cats, closely related to the small, feral cats native to the woodlands of the Heartlands of the Realms – the cats domesticated by many in the Dales, Sembia, Cormyr, the Moonsea cities, and the Sword Coast. Tressym vary in the hues and fur-lengths of their coats as much as normal (wingless) cats do. Most resemble a short-haired gray, tabby, or black cat, with two batlike wings at their well-muscled shoulders.

    Tressym wings have feathers. The leathery membranous wings are divided into arc-segments by hollow bones, rather like the elongated fingers of a bat divide up its wings, but the leathery membrane is covered in feathers.

    Combat: Tressym stalk and pounce on prey, scratching and biting much as normal cats do, but with the added ability of flight, which makes them far more deadly to birds (and insects) of all sorts. They do not, however, seem to attack nestlings or despoil eggs. In battle, they are cunning – scratching at the eyes of opponents, for example, and learning danger quickly, so that a tressym that sees a wand fired by a wizard knows about the danger of sticks of wood held by humans for the rest of its life.

    In addition to their 120’ infravision, tressym can detect invisible objects and creatures up to 90 feet away. Tressym can also detect poison; through scent, taste, or touch, they recognize substances that are deadly to the intelligent races of the Realms. Tressym themselves seem to be immune to all known forms of poison.

    Habitat/Society: Tressym are found on occasion in Eveningstar’s streets and trees. Northern Cormyr is the only place where they seem to breed and gather, although individual tressym, both wild and domesticated, may be found all over the temperate Realms.

    Villagers in Eveningstar feed tressym and try to prevent the worst of their vandalism and aerial catfights. At the same time, they try to prevent any large-scale or magically-assisted trapping and capturing of them. The locals value tressym for their owl-like rodent control in the fields. Most of the flying cats lair in nearby Starwater Gorge and hunt the farm fields night and day, avoiding local cats and dogs rather than fighting or tormenting them.

    Ecology: These cute, mischievous little terrors are semiwild and thought to be the result of some long-past wizardly experimentation. They are known to live 20 years or more if they do not meet with misadventure, and are free to take shelter from, or fly away from, the worst winter weather. Tressym mate as often as normal cats and do not mate for life. They sometimes mate with normal cats, with whom they are fertile, but only 10% of such young will be tressym; the rest will be wingless. Tressym are quite intelligent and have been known to form strong friendships (and hatreds) with creatures of other races, such as humans and elves. Tressym have even been known to sacrifice themselves for those they love.

    A few mages have sought these creatures as familiars. At least two wizards of Eveningstar (Lord Tessaril and Maea Dulgussir, who still conceals her magical skills from locals and visitors alike) have done so successfully. As familiars, tressym combine the sensory advantages of a cat and an owl, and have additional benefits: they are intelligent enough to carry and manipulate complex and delicate items (to an extent – they don’t have opposable thumbs); they can observe and report events diligently; they can concentrate on a task at hand even when hormones or instincts provide strong distractions; and they can communicate to their masters the identifications of poisons – even harmful gases not intended as an attack. Tressym cannot confer or transmit any immunities against poison to another creature. They are not strong enough to fly with even a halfling aloft. They can fly hard enough to slow a halfling’s fall to a 2d4 damage affair in descents of 90’ or more, but can’t lessen the damage suffered by any larger or heavier creature.

    Tressym tend to get along with others of their kind when they meet, but they rarely lair or hunt together. They also peacefully ignore bats, griffons, and the like, but are the deadly foes of stirges and manticores (against whom they will gather with other tressym to fight). Some tressym enjoy teasing dogs, but usually not to the point where either animal could be truly endangered.
    These guys have been around for at least the 22+ years I've been playing D&D, and Owlbears are nearly as old as D&D itself. I'm thrilled that DDO is working hard to bring these creatures to life. ^_^

    While I don't "hate" pets in MMOs, I don't appreciate them in "heroic" MMOs. Its one thing to have cute kitties and puppies in Wonderland or Hello Kitty MMO, but in Warcraft or DDO I'm supposed to be a powerful hero out to save the world. "But let me bring my tiny pet along into this dark dungeon filled with creatures and traps trying to kill us". It further removes the "RPG" from the MMO. Again, apparently a lot of people like them so I will deal with them. But if I had my choice to turn off viewing them I would.

    You know, I totally get that with questing. It makes me wonder if there should be an option so that pets can't be summoned (and are dismissed) in dungeons. If I think they'll be distracting I try to remember to dismiss them when in a party, but when I'm soloing, or it's just myself and my husband running around I'll tend to keep my pets in dungeons with me just for fun. ^_^

    Since edit isn't working second post.

    I'd be ok with a "Show no pets" button but i have doubts about that being feasible to implement.

    You DO realize that Tressym (the actual species name of the flying cat) and owlbears have been in the monster manuals for D&D since at least 2nd edition that I know for fact, and probably first. I'm not sure on the tressym being in first ed or not.

    So no..they're not making fun of their players at all, their giving a nod to the players who actually know old school Dungeons and Dragons with ambience.

    And hating owlbears?The owlbear is depicted as a cross between a bear and an owl, which "hugs" like a bear and attacks with its beak. Gary G. created the owlbear, which was inspired by a plastic toy and introduced the creature to the DnD world in the 1975. It has been in every version of DnD since. It has changed shape at least 3 times.
