Default What do I do with epic Hellfire repeater?

I thought I had a great idea with an Artificer that was also an Arcane Archer. Was going to imbue the bolts. Then found out that I can't imbue bolts with AA imbues.

I went to the trouble to get all the parts for an Epic Hellfire Crossbow and now I don't know what to do with it.

Hadn't gotten the Artificer high enough level to use the Hellfire yet, just enough to test the imbues from AA. Now I'm wondering, do I continue with the AA build or do I do something different?

    Suggestions?

Either go standard arty with repeater & runearm, ditching the AA idea, all-out archer artificer which is certainly viable if not optimal, or maybe as a potential thing to look into for when the enhancement pass rolls around is go with an artificer/ranger using the repeater - ok, it's not great at the moment but DWS should work with any ranged weapon & there could be some interesting synergies

I don't mean to come across as unsympathetic - but I am, so I do.

Well, my Artificer was an AA for a few levels before I went full Artificer. You just lose too much DPS using a bow, even switching on Many Shot only, I was noticeable losing DPS. I used the Windhowler Bracer to give me proficiency (and extra damage) but without STR to damage (Feat: Bow Strength) and having to switch ammo, it just became a cumulative loss of DPS.

Can it work, I would like to think so, but I wasn't able to pull it off personally nor have I read anyone who has.

You could just stick with a standard arty build; however if you still want some sort of AA arty, you could try something like this.

Basically, she plays like a regular arty, only she uses a bow w/Manyshot + AA imbues periodically. There are a lot of challenges for this build, inc. how tight APs get. Rgr dilly provides +8 dmg (STR 26); eventually you'll exceed that cap.

There are a couple of options on what to do with epic feats:
    • If you want to focus on boosting DCs, pick up GSF & ESF:Evocation; or maybe GSF:Evo and Empower.
    • If you want to focus on boosting your longbow DPS, pick up Power Atk+Bow STR and swap rgr dilly for rogue (+3D6 SA). This works well if you go FotW (Furyshot) or SD (Evasion+Incorp+6D6 SA).

I fell into the exact same trap - Elven Arti, intending to use AA. My solution is to just run her up to 20 and then TR her to something more useful

That being said, you can make good use of an Elf if you take a /2 Rogue splash and train points in Bluff. You'll get Evasion, and some Sneak damage (works well with a Deception weapon like the gloves from GH). 18 Arti/2 Rogue is actually a pretty good build for Heroic - lack of Evasion on a d6 hit die class is probably Artificer's greatest weakness. Of course, nothing from Elf really helps out that build except the added Enchantment save (Disco Ball is annoying), but its still a viable build.

First hand report: Epic Helfire Crossbow is the second worst epic crosbow in the game (Epic Storm is worst by not being a repeater). Needle is so far ahead of any other alternative it isn't even fun. However, on the competitive middle, the best ones are Epic Calomel for general DPS, and Slaver's crossbow for anything that can sleep. Epic Doublecross Bow is better than Slaver for having Enervation and naturally using Int to hit, but slaver is much easier to get. Epic Silver Slinger is basically a lich beater (SoS, Wiz-king, Abbot), and worse DPS against any other undead compared with a simple triple positive greensteel.

IMO, a triple fire greensteel repeater is better than Epic Hellfire. It is that bad.
Amossa d'Cannith, Sarlona, casually trying Completionist (12/14) [<o>]
    Almost-never-played-alts: Arquera - Chapolin - Fabber - Herweg - Mecanico - Tenma

I want DDO to be a better game. Those are my personal suggestions on: Ammunition, Archmage, Combat Stances, Deities, Dispel Magic, Epic Destiny Map, Fast Healing, Favor, Favored Enemy, Half-elf Enhancements, Monk Kensai, Monk Stances, Past Life, Potency, Potions, Ranger Spells, Summons, Tiered Loot.

It seems like they should switch the base item of those both around, it'd improve both their usefulness EHC would become a Heavy Crossbow, a simple weapon, and wouldnt be a bad ranged switch weapon with its Precision feat (which any Arti/Mechanic is already going to have anyway).

Likewise, Storm would be comparable to other endgame weapons with a Burst, a Blast, and a Shroud Proc, though the Keen is probably wasted, again, for most Artis or Mechanics.

Thank you all for the help. Looks like best thing to do is just drop the AA idea and run as standard Artificer build without trying to be so fancy.

Appreciate the build suggestion but probably just smarter to stay focused.

Looks like EHC is not really going to be that useful except as a situational weapon. I'll just send the parts over to a different character and settle in on a more useful Arty build.

    Thanks everyone.
