    Default Bladeforged Build Questions

*Update* The MK. III, while decent for a pure class and a decent starting point for newer players, is not quite as optimal as multi-class options. The MK. IV (Found at post #18) deals with a Fighter 2 splash (for extra feats such as the automatically granted shield proficiency, which opens up DoS over the MK. III).

Here's the MK. III. Build started from Junts's Paladin Creation Guide, and modded from suggestions found on this thread.

I'd like to thank everyone who has commented so far for the advice.

    Suggestions are still welcome.

    Junts's Starting Guide:

Also, my intention, in case if I didn't state it (or if I deleted it accidentally), was to create a pure Lvl 20 Paladin build. However, at this time, as the inevitable "soon" comes around to true reincarnation of iconic characters is drawing nearer, I would also be interested in seeing some multiclass build ideas.

Speaking from MY bladeforged you've done the starting stats wrong. You can actually have 17 str, 14 con, 17 charisma, 8 wis. Just so ya know
Two, that thread OP was 2009, much has changed.
My bladeforged went Defender of Syb (only cost one feat, meh) for a bit of str, some saves and hp... you did say survivability.
You took no feat at lv 6... Could take something boring like tower shield prof (none help much) and go defender of syb! Get 'dat hps
Skill-wise, I went concentration (or else all repairs in combat will fail c and intimidate.. Not that I'm made to tank, but if I can get agro and save that caster, why not?

I'll try to address what I saw as the main points of your response.

Concerning Junt's Original post: Point taken, but while browsing through some other paladin threads that were made over the course of the last month, quite a few of them made reference to Junts's thread still being a decent starting point.

Abilities: Did you leave the Dex at 6 instead?

Feats: Should have been a Power Attack listed there. With that in mind, what would you suggest taking out for Tower Shield Proficiency?

Skills: How would you have split the Con/Intim?

PrE: Originally, I was going to go HotD, then decided on KotC after noticing the large amount of "evil outsiders" in later content. While DoS does provide that pump for 20 seconds at a time, DM, while it might stack, provides a similar strength boost for a minute, without the added increase in threat, which is something that I'm trying to avoid. (Three things I learned from other MMOs: Don't stand in the fire, try not to out-threat the tank, and a dead DPS provides no DPS.)

Character is live at the moment, and I am eagerly awaiting for the ability to LR, which was promised with the ever wonderful "soon" in the Dev. Diary, at the very least to fix the Dex/Con issue and skills. Might even try DoS and see if it works any better in the meantime, as well as to see just how much it affects my threat.

    Thanks for the input!

Yes, I left dex at six. Pallys get enough saves, and DoS gives more saves, thus allowing me to focus on hps.
In regards to DoS/tower shield prof, I dropped greater THF <-- picking that up at 18, but in the meantime I get 4 str, 4 con and 15% hp. Yes, threat gen on a non-tank isn't great, but it's not that bad. You won't go splat, and if you're taking agro, heroic won't be an issue (few quests aside), whereas epics... Well. Depends on group I guess.

I found 512 hp (iirc) to be enough to take agro and not die (With starter gear/enhancements only), and seeming I solo alot, threat/hate doesn't bother me. Still, you can self heal, have lay on hands, various little things here and there, and aren't a soft little fleshy thing. Show them what a true Paladin of the Lord of Blades can do! :P

Drop the full THF line as mentioned, instead of the other two feats pick up cleave and great cleave. At level 21 grab overwhelming critical. Level 24 I'm not sure but maybe greater str if that helps you get an even number.

Also I'm not sure I'd go dos. I'd be more tempted for hotd for extra hamp. You don't get the extra str but the extra hamp will help, and there are some undead at cap now. The reason being the synergy of smite evil and adrenaline, since adrenaline is a rage effect it won't work in dos stance and you lose the main benefit of dos.

Instead of the tower shield prof you could then pick up stunning blow.

You might want to try different starting stats... I wouldn't dump wisdom too much or charisma

    Str 16
    Dex 6
    Con 16
    Int 8
    Wis 12
    Cha 16

Forget Shield and go THF. Feats can be changed later if needed for Epic Feats.
    Admant Plate
    PA
    Toughness
    IC Slashing
    THF
    ITHF

Build ups in Strength. Skill Intim.
I like Divine Might even though it doesn't last long. Hopefully in future this will be increased to 5minutes.
    KOTC build...

You really don't want more than 8 starting wisdom on a pally since a +6 item will let you cast all spells. You're better off even leaving wisdom at 6 and eating a +2 tome to make it 8 for the gear to work. Then you could put the points into int and get concentration and umd which are more useful. Intimidate is useful for a few conversation options and for tanking. Even so most things that need tanking have such high values that you will not meet on a pally. I think that ee lob and ee demon queen are both over 100 for a successful intim. Concentration for that oh **** heal if you were out of hands is going to be useful way more often. UMD for raise dead scrolls, heal scrolls, teleport, fire shield and displacement is even more so.

The THF line is really underpowered, it will not add as much dps to a build as going for cleave, great cleave and overwhelming critical. The THF line only helps glancing blows and they are not a major part of total dps output.

Advocating changing feats later is expensive either in plat and shards, or astral shards and should be avoided if possible. Especially since bladeforged can't lr at the moment.

The weapon specialization is a very low impact feat and probably not worth the feats as it's only + to attack and you'll be hitting just fine without them.

Since you have 2 feats there to play with if it was me I'd replace them with stunning blow and improved sunder.

Stunning blow cc's a mob and increases your damage, improved sunder will lower mobs fortification and lets you twist in sundering strikes (I think it's the name of it from legendary dreadnaut) The lower fort really helps vs high fort bosses such as the truthful one so that you can crit more and that equals more dps for the entire party.

    edit*
specialization is damage oops focus is to hit. It's still a lower use feat and outside of kensai fighters it really probably isn't worth a feat, if it's not a prestige requirement.

I went with 2 monk/2fighter/12 (I just leveled) paladin, for evasion, the bonus fighter feats, and defender of syb2 (which not as great as syb3, still is reasonable).

While that does indeed seem like a good plan, the original goal of this post, which might have gotten deleted when I posted the Mk. III was making a pure, level 20 paladin build, without any multiclassing. Well, either that, or I simply forgot to explicitly state it when I first made the thread. OOOH! LOOK! DOGGY DOGGY DOGGY....

Where was I? Oh yes. Pointing out that while multi-classing can get you more net feats, you can miss out on some of the higher level (and capstone) enhancements, like DoS 3.

However, I'm interested in your feat, skill, and enhancement choices, as I might consider DoS if/when we can TR.

I like the MK 3 build. Thinking of going that route with my Bladeforged. When it comes to gearing what are somethings that should be upgraded as in weapons mainly. I'm going to assume Greensteel at some point.

    Thanks

Gear-wise, I'm not entirely certain what to go for, aside from Greensteel items, and ensuring 100% fortification and deathblock at all times. I'd most likely prioritize Strength, then Charisma, then Constitution. Make sure that your Wisdom stays at or above 14 to keep the ability to cast your spells. Make sure your Dex bonus is at or below your max Dex bonus from gear. I would suggest using the Holy Greatsword more often than the starter if those are your only two options, depending, of course, on the content, similar to how I'd suggest KotC for devils and outsiders and HotD for undead.

Greensteel is probably not something to bother with, you can't tr and unless you're making a cha skills item for umd or various other clickies, it's probably not worth it on an iconic at endgame.

Default The "Long Awaited" MK. IV (Paladin 18/Fighter 2)

While I am keeping the Mk. III as a reference for those who want to use a pure paladin, the MK. IV has been developed (read as "Yes, I finally got down off my high horse about a pure class build").

I decided to go with this build simply because of the overwhelming suggestions of a DoS build vs a KotC or HotD. The beauty of this build is that it can follow any of those three paths, at least until the enhancement changes.

    Default A Slight Juxtaposition

So. I was just randomly wondering to myself one day what would happen if I switched the Paladin levels with the Fighter levels, and went Fighter/Paladin 18/2. Yeah, I loose out on all that sweet reconstruction healing that I can't boost via enhancements. But I still get to keep LoH, though only at once per rest. However... this opens the door for more damage through more combat feats. So, without further ado...
