Thx Demon, forgot about that Panther.

Still, I will wait and see. While I do want to have one, like most people, my money is far more valuable to me to waste just for that pet alone.

I will take my chances and play the waiting game. If I can get with TP, great! If not, no big deal to me as it's use would only be for cosmetic purposes and flavor.

Anyways, Standard pre-order made today and happy with that choice.

You know, I am in the same boat for the most part. This game is my hobby, and frankly my expenditures on it are not bad since I go VIP and other than the expansion I don't shell out extra cash. My one concern is that with 3 accounts that expansion cost does tend to skyrocket. I do wish there was some sort of recognition of that player type in their pricing model. Something like pay 100% on the first pre-order, 85% on the second, 70 on the third, or something like that.

I don't mind spending a little cash once a year, especially since it is around my birthday, but it does feel a little that I am being penalized a bit for how I've structured my subscription(s.) In essence, I have to pay 3 times what everyone else does for the advantage of a couple extra character slots and XP tomes. Meaning, if all my guys were on one account I'd get all of the "per character" stuff with one purchase and what I get with 3 purchases are two extra "per account" items.

Well, technically USD 69.98 since if you really only want the hireling why bother with the Collectors Edition?

    So, basically the prices are:

    Basic Edition .................. USD 29.99
Basic Legendary Edition ........ USD 69.98
    Collectors Edition ............. USD 49.99
Collectors Legendary Edition ... USD 89.98

The way it is worded though makes it sound the Legendary Upgrade will remain available after the pre-order goes away for USD 49.99. Still sounds a little steep to me, but I don't really care much about hirelings anyway.

Then again, if other games can get away with charging upwards of USD 30.00 bucks for a single mount, USD 50.00 for a hireling, cosmetic armor kit, Pseudo Dragon creature, cosmetic hat with cosmetic creature companion and a bunch of tomes and elixirs doesn't sound all that overpriced anymore.

To me the value in the LU comes from:

2 Pack of +3 Skill Tomes per character (More)
5 Sovereign I XP Elixirs (per server)
Lesser Tome of Epic Learning per character

So it really depends what each of those items is worth on their own, particularly the skill and epic xp items.

    From the purchase page:

Get the Exclusive Shadowfell Conspiracy Legendary Upgrade with a 20% off discount during pre-purchase only! A $49.99 value for $39.99. Includes an Owlbear Defender

Permanent Hireling, Lesser Tome of Learning per character, & much more! Offer only available at checkout with Shadowfell Conspiracy purchases.
What I'm understanding from the above.

    1) The legendary upgrade is only purchased alongside buying the shadowfell conspiracy.

    2) If you order it now, you get 20% off the price.

    3) If you buy the shadowfell conspiracy after the launch date, you can still get the legendary upgrade then, but at full price.

So the hireling is available after launch date, but for a few more bucks.

Hmm maybe I missed it but I never saw those panther hirelings go on sale in the DDO store except for the packs.

I'd suppose his theory is based on:

If a company says you can purchase a specific product in June only, it won't be available anymore in August (ie: Panther), but
if a company says you can purchase a specific product in June for 39.99 instead of 49.99 it could mean you still can buy the product in August for 49.99 (Legendary Upgrade).

I can agree though a developer clarification couldn't hurt.

Thinking back, the panther hireling was a perk as part of the pre-purchase collectors edition of the MOTU expansion, yes?

The owlbear hireling is not. It is part of an upgrade that is an optional purchase when buying either the standard or collectors edition of this new expansion.

    Different scenarios.

The price on the upgrade is not clear as of yet. You don't see the price for it until selecting it in check-out, I don't see it on the DDO Market as an item.

This sounds accurate. They knew if they put the Panther in the store people who bought the Collector's Edition of MotU would cry foul (and for good reason.) This time it looks like they made sure the owlbear moneymaker was a part of something that could continue to be offered well after the pre-orders.

Speaking of which, what is the Owlbear hireling? That is, the Panther is a 20th level fighter. What is the Owlbear?

I can't imagine it being anything but another fighter type. http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/owlbear.htm
Maybe it will get some form of "grapple" that immobilizes a single enemy temporarily?

It's also labelled as an Owlbear Defender, which also sounds like fighter. So people with Collector's Edition MotU and this will end up with a 17, 20 and 24 fighter perma hireling.

I wonder if you can have the level 17 and level 24 summoned at the same time?

Having a druid running around with all 3 plus the wolf + another summon from a spell + another from epic destiny would be amusing even if it's not likely to be effective at level 22+.
