There are some really great items in the game, but it's really looking like some of them are only obtainable through lottery style odds. I'm not trying to debate the need for Item rarity, especially on powerful items.
What I would like to know is at least a hint on if I'm wasting my time trying to "farm" for an item. If the item is so rare that it's in the 1 in 1000+ or 1 in 1,000,000+ range..I'd really like to know that ahead of time so that I can avoid wasting my entire DDO playing life in trying to obtain what is simply unobtainable.
I'm asking this because I've spent a month ransacking certain chests so that I can get a weapon for a specific "niche" build that I have in mind and after a month x 3 characters worth of weekly ransacking..I've not seen it. Now that's only 21 attempts a week over four weeks, so it's just 84 separate chances. That's rare and I'm ok with that.
But I would really like to know is how rare are we talking here? I will likely stop looking after about 500 tries. Given my characters that would be 6 months of looking for the item. I would really like to be playing my new build idea sooner than 6 months...but I can't find it up on either auction and I check at least twice every single day.
So this has all gotten me thinking...as much as I want to play and enjoy this new concept of mine, i'm not interested in spending over half a year in attempts to start it....so how rare is rare?
Could we get some kind of scale or at least some knowledge as to what you expect is a reasonable amount of time for a rare item to drop? I'm just looking for a little info on how the rare item drop rates are "tuned". If you have some in there that are so rare that you only expect a handful to ever exist on the server....I'd really like to know that so I can give up now and save myself the frustration and false hope.
