    Default Exchange a necklace.

My ranger has "Open Locks" and Disable Device" listed under skills but is unable to do either of those things. They are marked with an asterix indicating they are cross-class skills that cost twice as much to train. Neither skill is listed when levelling so it is not clear how to do this.
At the end of the Korthos quests I chose The Troubleshooter set which indicates it will give three additional points in both of those skills but it actually gives nothing .
Is it possible to exchange that necklace for one in a set I can use?

Certain skills (Perform, search, open locks, disable device, and use magical device iirc) have the 'trained use only' tag, which means that you have to have skill points put into the skill to attempt it.

Though search works slightly differently. To use search to find traps with a DC of higher than 20 (i.e. most traps) you need the 'trapfinding' feat, which is granted by lvl 1 or rogue or artificer (or by the divine spell 'find traps').

Assuming you have some skill points put into disable device or open locks, you also need the 'thieves tools' gear to attempt these skills. The tools can be bought from the harbor vendors, from the free agent favor vendor, or from the auction house. The best tools are the +5 tools, and are found loot / AH only. Having 150? free agent favor allows you to buy +4 tools from the favor vendor.

And for Disable Device and Open Locks you also need to be an Artificer or Rogue to put points into those skills.

As for exchanging the necklace, you only get the necklace reward once, so no. If you have the Devils Assault pack you could run the Chronoscope raid to get the Gem of Many Facets, which is all the Korthos necklaces in one, but that's a long way to go just because you picked the wrong necklace. Don't worry about it too much. The +2 to hit is nice, but you're not going to be useless without the right Korthos set.

You aren't allowed to put any skill points into open lock or disable device unless you have at least one level of rogue (or artificer.)

That's a once-per-life choice, but you can also get those necklaces as chain end rewards for phiarlan carnival and sentinels of stormreach. (I'm positive about carnival, only pretty sure about sentinels.)

I wouldn't stress out about the korthos necklaces too much. If you're vip, sure grab em from a quick run through carnival chain, but it's not worth buying those packs just for the necklaces.

Thank you for the information, Jingweismule, but that is what Iwas trying to do. The Troublshooter set indicated it would add three points to "Open Lock" and "Disable Device". The problem is that it added no points at all and its main features are not usable by my character.

Clearly, the mistake was not mine, Frotzme. Turbine erred when they put those skills in the Ranger's skill list when a Ranger can never use them. The skills do not progress at half speed as the text suggests but cannot progress at all because they can never start. This is what I call a "gotcha" which is a small uncorrectable flaw that reduces enjoyment but doesn't break the game.

This is an irritating little issue, Ellis_Dee, like the +1 arrow problem but not all that stressful. What I was hoping for was a work around for Turbine's mistake but my character is still playable without the ability to open locks. Too bad there is no standard rogue hireling but I guess they are aware of this omission.

Oi, I meant "wrong" as in the necklace turns out to not be the most useful for your character, not assigning you blame for making an error, sheesh.
The skills showing "n/a" also have a tooltip which states "Cannot use until trained", which means you have to put skill points into them, train in them, before you can use them at all. Yes, it is under-documented which classes can actually train in those skills, but every character can take a level in the appropriate classes and so no skills are forever forbidden to a character.
However, for opening locks and disabling traps it's most desirable to take your first level as a rogue for the boatload of skill points at first level, and then proceed with your ranger (with high enough Int to keep all skills up that you want even with the cross-class penalty, which applies when putting skill points into OL and DD on Ranger levels). See "Tempest Trapmonkey" builds.

No, it isn't an error. It's intentional and by design. Only rogues (and artificers) can trapsmith, meaning unless you have 1 level of either you can't do them at all. Much like Perform requires 1 level of bard.

Well, if you are still in Korthos and bugged with that small detail, re-roll, erase your toon and start over.

Anyway, nobody promised a ranger he could do traps, so its useless to get an item for that purpose.

You need to pay attention everywhere to these class-thing business.

Since you are still in Korthos as already suggested you could start a new character and then you could start with say 2 Rogue levels (lots of skill points for trapping etc and Evasion at an early level), Rangers get Evasion at level 9 but since doing traps I would advise getting it earlier. Skill wise put max points in to Search, Disable Device, Open Locks, Spot and UMD you want to put as many points as possible in to these at each level. Jump is also handy but only get about 10 levels since Rangers get the Jump spell which adds up to 30 points to the Jump skill and it maxes out at 40 anyway.

    Hope this helps
