Now off that tangent and onto something more worthwhile,

It's not that out of place in the city, I kinda wish they had taken the time to spruce up the textures around it so that it blended in with the theme a little more but on the whole it more caught my attention the first time I ran by it and after that it's just so much scenery really.

I think that if it actually helps people who work at Turbine deal with the events and if it in any way helps the victims of the bombings then sure why not so long as it stays unobtrusive. Where it sits right now I would say is a good balance. reading about the ribbons over the shoulder is really as far as I would hope it goes. Personally I won't bother spending an inventory slot on them but to each his own.

I have no problems with it being there. They are a few blocks from where this happened. I am sure it has impacted them, and props to them for doing this. I hope the memorial stays up and isn't taken down after a few months.

Aww. I was sure the shrine was in memory of VoN6 paratroopers. It's roughly where they land on.

Those of you who landed on the head of the guy/s saying it was for the bombing can start choking and dying on your own words now.

I have to agree though, that I don't see why bring this into the game... we're flooded with this every day on the news...

Pretty sure it happened within like a mile of their offices. Given the number of people who work at Turbine, I'd bet that someone in the office knows someone who's got fewer body parts than they did last month.

Seriously, is it THAT hard to deal with the possibility that the game is developed by people, who have lives and experiences? Look, people don't do memorials like this for stuff they don't care about. No bean counters came in and said "since 99.99% of our player base isn't in Boston and over 99% of them will never have been there, we're pretty sure a big shrine thing about the bombing will increase microtransaction revenue by 5%, someone better do this."

Someone at Turbine cared. A lot. Enough to do the work, enough to push for it to get moved into the live servers in a pretty short period of time. Common sense is that this mattered to someone at Turbine. Chances are really good that the someone it mattered to is a "person", which is to say, a thing which is self-aware and has feelings and experiences of its own. And that, to me, suggests that maybe not being a complete jerk about it and bashing them for having these feelings and experiences, might be the better course.

Show me someone whose creative works don't reflect their lives in any way, and I'll show you someone whose creative works suck.

I don't mind shrines/memorials, even in games. If it was up to me though, I would've preferred a more quiet/contemplative area... but to each his own.

I think it might be meant to mimic the actual site in various ways. But that is just my guess. No boosts of speed art so far.

I'm cool with this, and I'm cool with the free ribbons in the store. But heaven help your immortal souls, Turbine, if you in any way attempt to profit off of this tragedy.

How sad is it that they have come so far down the monetization road that this is something many of us are wondering and I am sure some are expecting.

Personally I will be really surprised if they have fallen THAT far, surprised though, not shocked.

The are making a profit. They are in store for 100TP. The only way they are free is if you ignore the splash in the store, see the splash ad in the forums, and then follow the link to read the details and find out about a coupon.

    Is this really the case?

I happily bought one and assumed that the proceeds were going to a fund for the victims and families.

If my money goes to Turbine profits I want my money back at once!

If they would dare to put money in their pockets on the coat tails of a national tragedy I would be shocked and appalled so I never imagined that could be the case.

I'm sure many would agree that this would show galling greed and insensitivity and find this an obvious attempt to funnel money people might otherwise contribute to a proper relief fund into the pockets of a video game company.

I can really see this as a national news story.

Can we get a comment Turbine?

Where does the money for these virtual ribbons go?

    Edit -

Re-reading the text it does imply but not state that the funds go to "The One Fund".

I must believe that is the case.

    They would never.

    Please confirm though, Turbine.

That's a fascinating question, partially because it's not obvious how you'd define the "money" for them.

Consider. Say I'm a free player, not VIP, not even premium. I quest a lot. After questing a lot, I have earned 100 TP in favor. I spend it on a ribbon.

How much money should go to charity?

    Wow ... just ... wow.

I was wrong, I am actually and acutely shocked, also supremely disappointed.

If they were making a donation or better yet matching donations on all the ribbons sold that would be a good thing but then they would be touting the hell out of that on the boards and in game and rightly so. This is just crass..

I am just not sure if I can reconcile this, I really hope it's not what is going on reading through their release though all it says is that it was added as a support to raise awareness (not funds just awareness).

A player not reading the release (and they have said many times we are a minority of players here) would not know to enter the coupon code and would likely purchase the ribbon assuming they are going towards the fund. For shame Turbine, this is far too low even for you.

At a minimum, you guys got your last gosh darn penny from me though, thankfully I went premium years ago. I think I am going to have to take a bit of a break and let this settle out myself not sure if this bothers me enough to just turn away or not but right now it's pretty damned close.

Quoting the release for posterity here is a link to the page

As many of you know, Turbine is located in the Boston area. Our community was deeply impacted by the tragic events at the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013. In an effort to help, our team has been supporting The One Fund, a charity set up by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Tom Menino to specifically raise money for those most affected by the tragedy at the Boston Marathon.

To raise awareness for The One Fund, the DDO team has created The One Fund Memorial Ribbon which is available for a limited time in the DDO Store. Players can enter the coupon code ‘Boston’ to receive up to ten free ribbons per account to show their solidarity with the victims of the Boston Marathon.

Click here to learn more about The One Fund organization.

    Thank you for your support!

About The One Fund Memorial Ribbon: Raise awareness of The One Fund charity that was formed to help those affected by the tragedy at the Boston Marathon. When used from your inventory in game, this item will display a blue and yellow striped ribbon over your character's shoulder until you log out. The ribbon has unlimited uses and is tradable to your friends.
