Question Need help boosting search and spot

My girlfriend has a an 8th-level Warforged Monk 5 / Rogue 3, but has been having severe problems with her spot and search skills. These skills are maxed despite multiclassing, and I though they would have been high enough for level-appropriate quests, but clearly they are not. We just ran through Tangleroot Gorge's "The Deadly Package: The Stronghold Key" on elite, which should have been quivalent to a 7th-level adventure, but she was not able to find the traps we knew were there even with a rogue skill boost active (in one case she was able to fin the trap itself but not the control panel). Open locks and disable device haven't been an issue with this character, probably in part due to enchanted thieves' tools.

Here is the breakdown of the relevant skills and associated abilities for this character:

    Warforged Monk 5/Rogue 3

    INT: 16 (+3 item, +2 tome)
    WIS: 16 (+1 item, +2 tome)

    Search: +18: 11 ranks, +3 ability, +3 troubleshooter's goggles, +1 enhancement
    Spot: +19: 11 ranks, +3 ability, +3 troubleshooter's goggles, +2 enhancement

Any advice on making this character effective at spotting / searching for traps? Thanks in advance for any advice.

It's the gear. You should be having plus 7 or plus 10 gear by that time. The plus 3 on the trouble shooter set is only good until you get out of the harbor.

Agreed; it's mostly the skill bonuses. Basically, it doesn't matter on which item you find a +7 to +10 search or disable item - swapping to them when you need them is what's usually done.

Aside from that, there are a number of options to enhance your skills, for example:
    (Greater) Heroism pots or clickies
Good Luck (+1 or +2 to all skills)

A lot of useful information is included in the following Compendium page: Is my (insert rogue) skill high enough?

This page is a bit old, but still contains valueable information how to improve your skills - the information to the DCs is probably outdated, though.

There are many ways to get an item to use when disabling traps - one is buying them at the Auction house, and another one is crafting them. If you cannot craft them yourself, maybe you can find a friendly guy to give your essences to who will do the crafting for you. On which server are you playing?
Toons on Orien: Meinir // Flodur // Twiddler // Thorkar // Impetor // Juliacantor // Minor all Soko Irrlicht

Goggles would be a good bet for spot/search/disable items to swap out. Run with spot goggles on then switch to search ones when you have spotted a trap, then disable once you have found the box. Keep in mind not all boxes are by the trap, Under the Big Top being one low level example.

Prior to Access to Greater Heroism you can use Heroism (Potion/Scroll/Clicky) for a +2 Bonus to skills

When you don't have a +4 or better Attribute item for Intelligence or Wisdom potions/scrolls/wands of Fox's Cunning or Owl's Wisdom will help make up the difference. This is potentially a +1 to +2 bonus.

Find Traps scrolls (2nd Level found in middle of the marketplace) can add +1 to Search for a Rogue and more if playing a Artificer due to their Scroll Knowledge. This is an Insight bonus so does not stack with other Insight bonuses.

Prayer scrolls (3rd level Divine scroll) adds a +1 Luck Bonus to skills. Does not stack with other luck bonuses such as what can be found on the "Voice of the Master" end reward to the Deleria's Quest line.

At level 8 you can have more than the +3 Bonus you are getting from the Goggles you currently have. Don't worry about having them on one item to be worn always. I recommend having the best Spot Item on while moving through a dungeon and then switch to search and then disable when needed as you won't need spot while your searching.

A lvl 5 Elite adventure is NOT the same as a lvl 7 Normal adventure; the former is (or at least meant to be) significantly more challenging than the latter, despite the 2-lvl difference in base quests. So, that's the first thing you should forget.

As others said, it's your GF's gear. You can find +10 gear which is ML:7, IIRC, though it probably won't come cheap. If you have access to Cannith challenges, you two can farm up a ML:8 Spare Hand; it won't help w/Spot & Search, but +7 Disable & OL will still help.

    Default quick bar for search

I set aside a bar with search gear.

Goggles with highest intelligence available or clicky with fox's cunning.
    Bracers with disable device.
    Boots with search.
Heroism potion from the battle box.

Skill boost from enhancements. If the gear is maxed, usually the trap can be found without hitting the skill boost.

...but most monks find traps with their face, so kudos for trying

If you're really looking to max-out her search & spot, here's an idea.

Wear Int +4 goggles, Wis +4 helm, Dex +4 gloves, and Spot +10 on your "switchable" ring. Carry a +10 Search, Open Locks, and Disable Device ring to switch on when you need them. Upgrade them as your level allows.

That should get her to 20 with very few failures as long as she's keeping up her skills.

    as above posters have mentioned.

Gear at level 8 you should have +7 to +10 items. AH usually has available..or better.. Cannith crafted gear may be an option.
Heroism pots.. should allways have a stack of these (upgrade to Greater heroism when you can..level 9+)
Enhancements are also available to bolster your skills.. usually at the bottom of the list of enhancements.

Run Delera's chain for The Voice (+1 luck..stacking bonus to all skills). can also use prayer scrolls/clickie until you get your Voice of the Master.

Carry the best tools you can get +5 tools give a +7 bonus to locks/traps.
Invest more into search than into disable if you are short on points as the tools will keep you in the no fail range
and......You have no chance to disable a trap if you cant find it...

Swap in stat gear as needed along with spot/search/disable/open gear.
    Wisdom is for Spot..
    Int for search/disable..
    Dex for Open Locks.

keep trading up the best gear you can as you level.

Monk stances effect stats.. change them as desired..
    Water for +2Wis/-2Str
    Air for +2Dex/-2Con
    Fire +2Str/-2Wis
    Earth +2Con/-2Dex

Light side monk also has finishers like
fire/pos/fire for +2 stacking skill for 1 minute
and if you took void strikes can also use void/pos/void for a +5 stacking boost for 15 seconds.

Jotmon - Let's not forget why we play these games - to have fun - ~
Guild: Degenerate Matter - 200 (Former Guilds: ChaosKnights, Big Damn Heroes, Shadowfiends, Order of the Drow, Unusual Suspects, Raided R)
Argo-Jotmon(Completionist - before the Otto's/XP pots easymode), Jotmonheals(Clr17/Rog2/Mnk1-Epic Completionist), Whatthetruck.. and many many more alts..

Update 24: Champions... "whew, it's ok, it's only a red name" .. sad day when trash spawn Champions and their one-shot ignore fort attacks instill more party fear than the Red named bosses.

Especially if you can farm it on a high level and pass it in a shared bank

Not much use to a WF Monk/Rogue

Is decent low level rogue skills/armor, but I would not go this route on any monk multiclass types.. screws up monk perks.

Also didn't get the impression they had higher level toons to draw gear from either, so looking at this from a first lifer perspective.

The next time Crystal Cove rolls around, farm for the Treasure Hunter's Spuglass.

Lvl 8 spuglass Tier 2 adds +11 to search + 11 to Spot, +1 to UMD, and a Find Secret Door clickie. It's like the trapper's Swiss Army Knife. Plus you can get them for multiple levels.

LVL 20 Tier 1 _s +15 to search / spot. Add an INT +6 item and a WIS +6 item and you are a trap-popping fiend.
