Default What is the point to the Underdark?

Sorry if I don't know much of the lore or if this question has been asked before. But per the title: why do we even have the Underdark? A wilderness area full of 1 single quest. Is the Underdark just there for lore? What is the point of going there?

I didn't mind when the expansion first came out, but now that I have TR'd a few times/characters I find myself annoyed more than excited every time I have to make my way from the Kings Forest to the Drow City of Sschindylryn.

My thought is that they wanted to include underdark because of it's popularity among the Forgoten Realms fanboys.

And yes, it would be much more pleasant if you got the portal to Sschindylryn opened once you flagged for the quests there.

My guess is that the Underdark is only currently unpopulated. Seems like forward planning on the Dev's part. It gives them a spot to plug in the entrances to a future updates quests. (Yuan-Ti chain, anyone?)

Its very likely this zone will be a launching point for upcoming content in the works. Probably over a dozen storylines that can be tied into this region for future expansion packs.

    My guess;

Cannot deal with a Drow invasion of FR, Lloth, or Sschindylryn without the Underdark.

Rather have Underdark there then not to save the minute or less it takes to run to the entrance to the City of Portals.

Wow... this is a one time run, then the cavern is open for transport...

I would find something more beneficial?

I am glad it was there - there is plenty I would skip if it were economical to level up more lives...

For me... I have two toons - 3 lives, I am having a hard time deciding TR or just make a third? I do not need to solo EE with just my underwear and an ESOS... I am content soloing all of the EH and doing raid and quests with strong groups on EE...that is good enough for me.

I think the run through Kings Forest can be done in under 5 minutes however... one time... not really a big deal.

What disappoints me is not the design or execution but the lack of use of it. Not just the quest OP mentioned, but once you find Schin... there's no reason to step foot into the Underdark again. Damn shame, really.

I still have some rares to find; but once those are done, I doubt I'll go back in until the next L20 character.

The Underdark is fairly well done. If you have a weak enough character to not crush the place, there is plenty to see and do in there. Some of the rare encounters are more fun than the Sschindylryn quests.

Like all explorer areas, it would get a lot better with the option of a higher difficulty setting.

you have to take a teleport to the outpost and jog a couple hundred yards to it where you pretty much run down a straight path to the city of portals and enter through the city square portal to open everything.

I mean hell it's not even far. Jogging around the ruins od GH or the vale would probably take longer.

I know. I do that every life.

Do you ever go back to the underdark?

I guess they had to include it because it's part of the expansion's name. Menace of Schindylrin (sp?) doesn't have the same ring.

I fervently hope that they do NOT ever add more quests to the underdark. The floors in there don't draw on my machine, so the entire area is an unplayable mess for me. Any quests in there (including the one in there now) are off-limits to me because of this.

I do a full exploration of the King's Forest, the Underdark, Sschindylryn and the Demonweb on my epic characters because these are big areas that bring back DnD memories of hours of exploring. One thing we missed in DDO was huge areas full of DnD lore to explore.

It's also decent XP not like Korthos Island.

Underdark is tremendously well done. Just simply THE best wilderness in the game so far. Yeah, I'd love it if there were more quests in there, but I'd rather s/r/e in UD than in KF ANY day of the week. KF is huge, underpopulated, flat, and boring (not to mention i hate the Darkening). UD is huge, intricate, three dimensionally designed, and FULL of encounters. Love it.

Its sad that most of FR fanboys don't know that Underdark and drow are originally from Greyhawk...

We went to the Underdark because a dark power is emerging and soon will be released with all its power! (or not)
That power comes by the name of Neverwinter.
(or at least that is what i think about why Underdark appear)

    http://ddowiki.com/page/Category:Wil...dventure_Areas

Korthos Island - Slayer, Explorer & Rares total - 8,462 xp
Slayer Max Level is 3 {so just over a quarter of said max level can be earned in the Slayer alone}.

    Devil Battlefield - Max Level 24 - Total XP - 244,510
    XP required for Lvl 24 = 750,000

Korthos isn't so bad you know!

I'm commander BruceTheHoon and Underdark is my favourite explorable area in Forgotten Realms.

More like star trek. Leme see....pointy ear elves that live longer than humans, and split off from their bretherens agenda, became evil, and were kicked out/encouraged to leave, and moved somewhere else vowing to take revenge on their ancestors when the time was right? Yeap.
Advocating repeated nerfs in the name of "balancing the game" then complaining about how DDO is moving away from D&D, is a direct contradiction in logic - D&D 3.5 (what DDO is based on) is not a balanced game. We can either have a balanced clone MMO with homogenized classes, or we can have a D&D game. We cant have both.
