Working on druid life 2 and getting ready to TR to druid one more time before doing monk lives x3, and back to druid on life 7.
On druid life 7 I'll have a lot of the benefits augment offers to a first life druid and free up a feat slot.
At that point I'll be torn between getting quicken or maximize.
I got dressed down in a raid yesterday for not having quicken on my melee wolf druid. I can understand that this guy thinks he knows everything but I could tell he hadn't done the analysis, nor played a melee druid to level 25.
Quicken enables your 10 second cast time for reincarnate to be reduced to 5 seconds, which still sucks. Sure it gives you no-fail casting too, but I have no trouble self healing without it even when fighting bosses, so I think maximize is the way to go.
At level 25 you really don't fail casts much even with 15 mobs beating on you. I've been there, done it, had quicken, never turned it on, and didn't fail casts often enough to care. Naturally I maxed out concentration.
In a fight with stuff beating on you, even with a 5 second cast time, casting reincarnate will get you killed because you are defenseless. Lets face it if things are going so bad that a melee druid needs to cast reincarnate to res a healer, he's probably not going to get that healer up with or without quicken in epic elite.
He'd be better off grabbing the healer's stone and snow sliding a mile away to get him up.
People say it's required for casters, but a melee druid is a melee toon that happens to be able to cast. I don't consider them "casters" in the traditional sense of the word. This is one of those instances where you need to stop playing druid like you play your wizard or cleric.
Quicken is a waste of a feat on a feat starved class for a melee toon, except for ressing people after part 4 of shroud. Not worth it. At least you get useful DPS out of maximize and when you have doublestrike maxed, power attack and IC Bludgeon, that's the most additional DPS you can get for a single feat slot, assuming you have +10 seeker somewhere on your gear.
Maximize is 100% additional dmg and also works on some positive energy spells (cure serious, mass greater vigor) so it's a win-win over empower/empower heal since a melee druid is all about dps, not healing, though the additional healing provided by even a melee druid without empower heal, can really help. Maximized greater vigor with eminence of life is ridiculous.
All this being said, I let the guy run his mouth and didn't argue. I know how useless quicken is in end game for a melee druid (indeed through the druid's entire career). He obviously doesn't and is stuck in play-druid-like-a-wizard-mode.
You simply won't have 5 seconds to get a reincarnate off in an epic elite quest with mobs beating on you. You'll just die because you are defenseless and move like an elephant in 4 feet of liquid tar for the 5 seconds it takes to get the quickened reincarnate off. In that situation, 5 seconds is still a lifetime, just like 10 seconds is.
... and epic elite is the only place where you are going to need to res a healer where you can't simply kill everything then get the healer up.
So if someone gives you grief because you don't treat your melee druid like a wizard and waste a feat slot just to beat a timer and get people up in shroud, /squelch
They can get their chests after the quest is over.
So before you go running your mouth telling a melee druid he's gimped without quicken, check yourself because you are flat out wrong. Quicken doesn't offer enough of a benefit for me to forgo maximize or 6% of my melee damage. Just shaddup and mind your own build.
