Thanks for all the comments everyone!

I'm enjoying the rogue / ranger build that Nibel posted (especially dual-wielding fintan's bite and having almost constant bodyfeeder boosts), and thinking of a Drow Cleric build (http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=332212) once I get 400 favor to unlock.

Any thoughts on the trapper cleric build listed (though I do see that Ellis already posted in that thread )?

I see that overall warning against dual splashing, but wouldn't a pure cleric have issues with traps and spellcasters due to no evasion?

You can fix the old links simply by rearranging the URLs.

I started playing about two weeks ago, and my favorite explorer-build is a (planned) Wizard 12 / Fighter 8. Due to sentimentality because I loved playing both Baldur's Gate an BG2 with one Fighter/Wizard and to try out if it's viable in DDO too :-)

I'm Level 4 now (Wiz 3 / Fighter 1), wielding Great Axes or twohanded swords and it makes a lot of fun. I choosed Human and took the Dragonmark of Finding as a Feat which sometimes is really useful in Elite-Quests, especially in the sewers where these oouzes generally destroy my favorite weapons. In this case I just take the found temporary weapons which they can eat unscrupulously because it doesn't matter. This build has no selfhealing nor trapskills, but I like it. Perhaps this will change in the higher levels, but if this happens I guess I'd go through precisely because of that.

Some traps have already killed me, but since I took Resilience (+4 to all saving throws) as a feat along with Nightshield it helped a lot to survive most of them til now, and also against some annoying attacks like knocking down or saving throws against poison effects. I do not cast ranged offensive spells, but buff myself instead with shields and other useful things. Doing quests for the first time on elite was a bad idea, but their difficulty varies a lot. Some were doable, others not. Luckily I found a Composite Bow on Korthos, so unreachable Mobs or Rooms with too much of them to melee at the same time are no problem - as long as I know that they are there (which usually requires "knowledge by death in the first try" about what awaits me there).

I also tried other classes with selfhealing, but I didn't have enough time to heal myself or just couldn't figure out my appropriate playstyle yet, so I let this mainly do the hireling and drink potions if needed (although this only happened on Elite difficulty level).

A lot of good advice here so far, but I'll add in my own opinions:

Tempest Trapmonkey is probably the best bet for a F2P solo character. Covers all your bases (self heal, traps, decent DPS, and decent defenses with Evasion). Plus, dual wield melee is great DPS, you have a workable ranged backup with Manyshot, and most importantly, its not too expensive for gear or consumables....it doesnt require any special named weapons, doesnt require extensive use of potions or scrolls, etc. You can get by nicely on lootgen, AH, and work on your crafting as you go. Once you hit L10 and you can get a pair of Disruption, Banishing, and Smiting weapons, plus a pair of decent pure-DPS weapons (ie XXX Scimitar of Greater Bloodletting, which works on everything), you're golden.

WF Artificer is another option, but requires some investment to unlock. All of the same benefits as above, except no Evasion as a pure, and its a bit more active with spells and runearms, rather than just hack-and-slash melee.

I also had a lot of success with a WF melee Sorc. Again, requires you to unlock WF, but its versatile, and extremely poweful, especially in the upper levels, where Trapmonkey and especially Arti can start to flag. 1 Barb/19 Sorc, specialize in no-save spells like DOTs (esp. Acid) and self-buffs, get yourself a nice Greataxe (the Cannith one is the cheapest and among the best at L16+), self heals too.

Barb also gives you Sprint boosts, which as a solo explorer is immensely helpful in speeding up many missions. I cant stress enough how awesome it is on any mission where its not a purely linear faceroll - which is more missions than not. Tempest Trapmonkey gives you Sprint boosts too, of course, so another point for it there.
