    Default Oh I agree

I have two paths I normally follow with loot:

    1. give to someone and that's that. no drama

    2. put it up for roll. roll wins. no drama

Pretty simple and seems to work.

My point to the OP was that by implementing rules AFTER the roll, he was in fact creating the type of drama that he was complaining about in his post. Either state the rules clear PRIOR to the roll, or go the simple way (roll wins, thanks)

Do you mind if I borrow this? I don't have a signature quotation, but this would be a pretty good one if I did.

I think it would be hilarious if we started to see lots of people passing their loot to the party leader and quoting the above. I might try it myself.

The OP had a "need before greed" expectation that is apparently pretty common. He didn't have to really explicitly state that expectation. The roller broke that social convention by rolling for greed or whatever. Since "break a deal, face the wheel" he didn't get the item.

Sure in light of apparently this population of greedy goombas out there in pugland you're right people accustomed to operating with more gamer courtesy should not assume others are operating at the same ethical level and spell-out their expectations.

The game gave it to him. To whom he chooses to ultimately pass it, if pass it at all, is entirely at his discretion...when we get right down to brass tacks.

Heck...maybe pull out a d6 and a d12 and make the roll next to your computer to decide who get something you're choosing to give away, still random. One reason to dig out that old Crown Royal bag if you're not playing tabletop these days.

So, someone had an expectation, unstated, and was disappointed with the results.
Someone else had an expectation, unstated, and was also disappointed.
A bunch of forumites feel their unstated expectations should be followed, and stating them is unnecessary, despite others being disappointed.
A bunch of other forumites feel thier unstated expectations should be followed, stating them is unnecessary, despite others being disappointed.

What a shock that we all don't get along.

My rule of thumb on rare btc items is to put up for roll, but give the current life build for that item a hefty bonus on the roll. For example if say something like Nightmare D100 High wins, but Bastard Sword Proficienct gains a +50 to roll. That way its fair and you don't create any illusion that you passed an item to a friend (even though IMO that is still OK since its your loot). I just think creating some fairness and consistency to loot passing is good for the community. I cannot tell you how many times I would have used a BTC item and friends or guildies arbitrarily pass it to each other just because they are collecting, but afterall it is their loot and they can do what they wish of it.

One time in CiTW, an arcane pulled Anitpode and asked for offers starting 1mil plat. There was only one monk in there and he didnt have the money so couldn't put up an offer. The arcane said he would loot since unless he got an offer. The monk spoke up and said he had 250k maybe. The arcane said that was fine since he didnt have any other offers and couldn't use it anyways. Now you can say that it is his loot and he was right in doing that, but I was in a raid before with this guy and he begged for an item and used the whole "but I am the only arcane in here please give the ring to me", won his case and got a ring he lost a roll on (and without forking over cash). That is just not right. Needless to say he is on my squelch list now.

In a PuG, I say "roll d69 if you are interested in XXX", then I'd decide who to give it to. Make assumptions all ya what about what your roll means, I may simply just be using it to figure out who is interested before I choose (especially if other rolls are going on in chat).

To be fair though, if I said "high roll takes it", etc -- I'd toss it to the winner. If I start wasting peoples time, questioning their motivation/build/whatever, I am just asking for drama.

    Default Good for you Reck

Sorry but I dont read forums often enough to be punctual in adding my two cents.

Well done for A admitting you made a mistake and B doing what you thought was right in that situation.

For situations where I am not governed by my own guilds loot policy I personally would allow those who would use this item immediately first option. TR usage is secondary and everyone else gets sloppy thirds. This seems to be the general sentiment among the more ethical players.

I don't play favorites I want my loot I do not want to be used, not banked for in case.

+1, well ok theoretical +1 as forum wont let me give you any

    Default Nope.

A roll is a roll, the dice decided. You changing your criteria after the rolls is kinda... lame. If I was in that party and won your roll, and you passed it to someone else, or started quizzing me about what i intended to use it for... well, I'd be put out too. Not to the point of lambasting you or squelching you or ANYthing at all really, but i'da still been peeved.
Until the item leaves the chest in someone else's name, I can do what I like with it. Not reading any of the multiple posts where OP stated he didn't realize the fighter/ rogue could use it until the rolls happened doesn't validate anything either. If I roll on something and they then exclude me because I rolled a 4 and the guy with the loot hates the number 4, that's his prerogative, even if he didn't say that when I rolled. I think OP did what any decent person would do, and I am a loot wh*re myself. If I roll on a shiny I try to make sure no one else needs it or if I do roll and win and then something in this situation happened (which very similar things have happened) I don't get butthurt; I shrug and move on.

There are so many parallels to this in RL but all of them are touchy subjects so I won't bring them up but the point is even if you say something, until you pass the loot you can always change your mind and everyone else needs to respect that.

Of course you can do with loot whatever you want before you pass it.
Just keep in mind the Golden Rule, someone in future could not recognize your build and don't pass you item you want.

Not planning to use a b-sword on my monk so i put it up for roll. b-sword using fighter/rogue in party drops his roll instantly, could tell he was hawking the sword. He had a crappy roll but seemed like the only one who wanted sword.

Little late to roll a second person rolls on the sword. Now, after calling for the rolls I realize that this is THE item for this rogue toon and I wanted to make sure secondary person was going to fully utilize the item before I passed it to them. So I asked the second person if they where planning to actively use the sword or if it was just bank space flavor for them. People usually find their citw item long long long before the comm's to upgrade and use it, alot of times ive seen people put weapons for roll with nobody interested in them... So what happened was extremely odd to me. The second person (who won the roll) immediately griped that I was now wanting to pass the item to my friend (i dont know the b-sword rogue very well so that wasnt the case) after first offering up the item for roll. Which is not what I did, and not what I asked. But it was posed to me in such a way that they made it obvious I was doing some underhanded loot passing in their eyes.....BS, and ef you.

I was trying to make sure i didn't screw a true b-sword user out of his dream weapon because someone else thought it looked kinda pretty and might use it some day. If the second person would have replied with anything hinting towards something like "Oh yes, absolutely. Would really love that item" or any flavor or color along those lines it would have been passed immediately....instead he immediately accused me of some underhanded loot practices (plus he never answered the question i posed to him) so the item went to the b-sword fighter/rogue.

I put it up for roll instead of vendoring to help folks out that slogged through that hellish raid with me..not to tease people then just pass the item to my personal friend. Don't accuse me of that unless your sure of the situation. All they did was make me really mad, believe me they didn't teach me any life lessons about raid loot distribution.
Speak warrior 5 hours of raid. kkkkk
I heard you offer, I even like to make you an offer, plus the weather was not nice, so I preferred to stay silent, who would love to have you Falcion dropou, however, the only thing they could have done was give my recommendation and more nothing.
Relax, after 5 hours, people often talk nonsense.
In the next dropagem leaves a bit lucky for me. kkkk
Now I had never been on a raid 5 hours, was tastier suffered in the end.
