    Default 12-21-12- Calm down

If the Mayans were any good at predicting the future, there would still be Mayans.

(Found on Facebook, but so good, I had to share. )

Yea, the funny thing is they actually made no prediction at all.

That counted dates, made a calander and the cycle, I think its a 5000 year cycle or something, ends soon.

There is no doomsday prophecy predicted, they didn't say what would happen, they didn't even suggest ANYTHING would happen.

Really, its like going into Clinton Cards, buying a 2012 calander then assuming that, as its last date is 31/12/12 the world will end once you get to the last picture of Justin Beiber

    There still are Mayans.
There are an estimated 7 million Maya living in this area at the start of the 21st century.[1] Ethnic Maya of Guatemala, southern Mexico and the Yucatán Peninsula, Belize, El Salvador, and western Honduras have managed to maintain substantial remnants of their ancient cultural heritage. Some are quite integrated into the majority hispanicized Mestizo cultures of the nations in which they reside, while others continue a more traditional culturally distinct life, often speaking one of the Maya languages as a primary language.

My demands are simple. Ducks, penguins and tortoises as pets. I'll buy hats and bow-ties for them all.

"The overarching term "Maya" is a collective designation to include the peoples of the region who share some degree of cultural and linguistic heritage; however, the term embraces many distinct populations, societies, and ethnic groups, who each have their own particular traditions, cultures, and historical identity."

Thats in the paragraph above the one you quoted.

I would say that modern Maya are very different from ancient Maya.

I could say that I am the same as the ancient Britions too, that wouldn't make it true though.

I be careful with those "fail" accusations :0 its really just interpretation. I agree with the OP, Maya as we associate with "prophecy" about to happen, is clearly relating to an ancient civilisation.

I wouldn't employ a builder PURELY because he was Italian, and hey, everyone knows the Romans were great builders.

For roughly 151,600* people it will be the end of the world. Maybe more due to people actually believing that the Mayan calendar accounted for leap years.

*Just an average, there could be zero but highly unlikely.

And this would be awesome and also horrific :

I used to make a little calendar in my little notebook keeping track of what watches I was scheduled for and I threw in underway/inport periods. I didn't bother making it out past my EAOS. The world didn't end, I just wasn't on the watch rotation anymore.

One could argue that the FIRST picture of beiber was a sign of the end of the world. The rest were just rubbing salt in the wound.

Actually, there still are Mayans alive, and according to the interview I saw they seem to be amused as heck at all the hubbub.
