Sometimes us old folks can forget how confusing making a trapsmith can be for someone new. I've seen several folks try, but fall a little short and I thought I'd try to get some info up on the easier to find board.
To the compendium trapsmith article:
Also know that the specialist forum below has the rogue threads in it.
Now a few quick tips from the above to help get started:
1: max out the skill Search and Disable. Some people like to memorize where the traps are, but I would recommend also maxing out Spot. Unless your dex is super high, Open lock is also nice to max, but not required for traps, just doors and LOOT!
2: Get the highest INT item you can find. You don't have to wear it, but have it for searching and disabling. INT potions are +4 and are also good to have until you have a +4 item.
3: Hero potions give you another +2 until you get yourself a greater hero clickie (which will be a while if you are new.)
4: Luck item. I think the first one will be from delera's. There is +1 on the voice of the master along with the 5% xp boost. Great quest chain and a good item for starting out.
5: Tools: +5s... should be cheap on the auction house. These can cover other inadequacies at low levels. Guildmates can probably give you tons of them from their high level alts as well.
6: Search and Disable items. You should be able to find Level -2 fairly easy (i.e. if you are level 7, you should be able to find +5 items.) Make sure your INT item is not in the same slot as search and disable, you want to wear them together.
7. Spot. I like spot. It finds traps and bad guys both. Wisdom is the applicable stat and you will need to keep your spot item on. Odds are good that after you "spot" the trap you will swap this item for either your search or INT item, but that is okay. Once you get the "danger sense" message, you don't need spot. Stand still, swap to INT and SEARCH and locate the trap.
Can I do elite as a new trapsmith? Yes, yes you can. BUT! (lol) you will need most of what I mention above to spot, search and disable. Ranks alone will not be enough. (You can even do it by splashing a level of rogue or artificer, but you need to plan your INT to be high enough to keep your skills max'd.)
Trapsmiths can be a lot of fun to play. This set of skills is a really nice bonus onto what your character is otherwise. (i.e. DPS or assasain rogue, ranged dps artificer, tempest ranger etc WITH full trapsmith skills.)
Good luck and I hope to group with you soon!
