A good screenshot is one that when I see it, I really really wish that I had though of it.
It should inspire a sense of waht this game can really be: A grand adventure filled with ups and downs, laughter and beauty, and each day you are surrounded by this digital beauty that you should stop and look at at least for a few moments.
Because DDO content is created by hand, some issues cannot be fixed with a global change. We must fix these issues one-by-one by hand with the help of bug reports. This includes:
Ladder issues: please include the /loc when reporting a ladder issue

Hard question to answer but for me it probably has to be a picture that makes me see something in a different manner, making me realize that I've probably not really "seen" the object/view in question before even if I have looked at it before.

    A good screenshot should either

    a) be so incredibly fail, it's hilarious ("An Epic Victory")
    b) show off an impressive landscape: Just the right contrast helps this feeling
    c) show a lot of action: Several people doing different things to achieve a goal. For example, a melee tripping a giant while being healed by a melee FvS while said FvS Leaps over to the downed giant.

All of these benefit from not having something absolutely invaluable to the player: The UI. An otherwise excellent screenshot can have its beauty ruined by 20 thousand hotbars scattered around, the party's HP, Ki, and MP totals, and the chat bars. It's not that they're ugly, they're just distracting from the focus of the picture.

What do you think makes a great screenshot?

I think that had to be two points:

1.- Be beauty, cool, spectacular, amazing, etc
2.- Show how great playing DDO is

Something captivating that draws in attention.
Something that you don't mind looking at more than twice either for beauty or wanting to remember something spectacular.

I think a good screenshot is one that can awaken any emotion, whether it's a beautiful piece of scenery, or an image of hilarity directed at present times.

The hardest part is only deciding which one to pick if many have done this for you.

A great screenshot (like photography) should invoke the feeling intended.

It should have cool subject matter, like an interesting-looking NPC, and great lighting to best show off said subject matter. It also helps when alt-z/crtl-z is working correctly!

I like the epic ones with lots of action. I like to see players facing new bosses in the latest content. I'm tired of Stormreach Harbor vistas.

A good screenshot comes down a lot to originality. We can only be impressed by your character in sunsets/moonlight so many times...

Also a question for you: Is there an unwritten rule where we cannot win screenshot of the week more than once?
Because I had submitted a very cool screenshot of my monk meditating in front that ice sun, and instead a picture of 2 guys standing on a guild ship won that week, which seemed rather surprising.

the best ones are the ones that make me call over my Wife to "come take a look at this!" type emotions (She plays too.)

There is usually some "wow!" aspect to the image. Screenshots are by definition to me, snapshots of game life, not stills posed for amusement. I recall many awesome ones from the End of the Risia test server, based on over the top action in the marketplace.

Scenic shots are nice and all, but generally lack that Wow aspect that turn them from good to great. Great shots tend to be like candid spontaneous photos that capture a moment in time.

I think that a great ss is the one that makes you stare at it, looking deeply instead of just scrolling down, the one that catches your eye and make you feel more like DDO

I guess I'd have to vote for Sunset in Eveningstar; it's quite peaceful, yet the bridge barricade suggests trouble!

Also honourable mention to DemonWeb Ice Sun...

It reminds me of the comet superman spent his toddler years in (in the Christopher Reeve movies).

It's definitely possible for someone to win more than once, we actually don't even connect the screenshot to a user name until after the winner is selected, so you could win week after week if your screenshots are good enough.
Have fun, and don't forget to gather for buffs!

A good screenshot sparks curiousity and makes you wonder what else is out there.
