    Default ripped off part 2

Dear turbine, i was just scammed by someone misrepresenting themselves as an alt of a friend, i gave them over 60 epic scrolls 2 dozen assorted small and medium ebberon shards and 3 large devil sclaes. This is probably the same person wwho has been harassing her before, rolling toons with names similar to here I cannot believe that you can not make this right, i have been a VIP player for 3 years, and my reputation as a fair and honest player speaks for itself. I cannot believe that turbine does not place more value in its customers and is unable to fix situations like this. This incident and an inability on your part to make it right smear your company's reputation and sour players towards you. Yes i know its my fault for making the trade, but they were mirepresenting themselves as a bank toon of a friend who i have been playing this game with for 3 years. I did submit a ticket as soon as i knew what was going on, while the imposter was logged in and in party with me.
Your inablilty to correct such an egregious violation of the EULA is making not only myself, but friends and guildies re-evalute our desire to keep paying to play this game. We feel like we are not valued as customers or a community.
As a company if you dont take care of your regulars then you will soon have none.
Please reconsider this and make it right, make us proud of you turbine,
    sincerely yours,
    Tonyclifton
update: I find it ironic that my original post was pulled down within an hour of going up. It appears turbine is more than willing and able to police the forums, but not the servers. I edited out any names from the original post, although my friend had no issues with me posting her name.
And just what good would it do banning the harassers account? they no doubt created a seperate account just for that. Can you not trace my goods? Maybe the scammer mailed them to their main account.
Come on turbine do the right thing, earn your company and your DM's some renown and fix this please.

While the situation truly sucks, the overall culprit is players, not Turbine.

You did admit it was your fault for not being 100% sure and actually clicking the trade button.

The naming policy allows people to make similar names for a reason. Sometimes you want to be known as John, but someone already made that name. You then have the option of making your name Jon or Johnn. It's quite similar, but not against the rules.

Also, this is a MMO. Especially a free one. For every one customer that leaves, there's plenty to take his or her place. You'll just a be a minus 1 in a flow chart that still is growing.

I would like to know, what violation of the EULA has been done? Or are you stating that the EULA needs revision?

Also, one last point. Isn't stealing apart of Dungeons and Dragons? Now, stealing by cheating outside the rules of the game would be a violation, but stealing is a theme of D&D. This theme can come from picking locks to chests all the way to misrepresenting oneself.

actually while making the transaction i was certain it was her or i never would of clicked accept button. And i frimly believe that fixing this is just the right thing to do. DM's in other games go out of their way to be helpful and friendly, but not in DDO.

As I mentioned in your other thread about this, it is not Turbine's responsibility to fix as nowhere do they say they will handle these mistakes/cons.

In your quote here, you say you were certain.....ultimately, that places the blame for following through the transaction on you, not Turbine.

I agreed before that it would be great if Turbine could/would do something, but then they would have to help everyone who was conned by another player. I don't see them taking on this role. This is not the same as the bank error eating a bag (which they can sometimes help with as it was a malfunctioning mechanic/bug on the fault of the game). This was someone being sneaky and you fell for it.

You also mentioned in the other thread that the community has mailed/sent your character items to help make up for the loss. while I can't speak for what you've been given, your loss is somewhat diminished by the generosity of others.

You are also talking about the moderation of your previous thread, which unlike the situation in game you describe, is against the TOS for the forum.

This thread will be pulled down as well. It really sucks what happened and I agree it would be great if something could be done, but nothing will (other than support from other players).

You gave away your items. The game did not eat them. You were not robbed, and the EULA specially states you have a license to use the game, but do not actually own any part of it. Hopefully lesson learned to be more careful and you've seen the generosity of members of the community. Turbine is only obligated to moderate what they state they will. This is not one of those things. Again, sorry it happened, yes it happens a lot, and it comes down to the player being aware of what they're doing.

    Default irony

Does it not strike all of you as kind of ironic that they so closely and zealously watch the forum, but on the server pretty much anything goes? How and why would you waste manpower watching forum posts but let scammers run free on the server? The scammer in question was on again this morning, after being reported by multiple players. Obviously nothing was done about them. And yet turbine has the resources to monitor forums, and will ban players for things they SAY on said forums, but wont do thing when they DO something incredibly nasty on the server?
They have their priorities backwards imo.
Again, no matter what the TOS says, ultimately fixing this is just the right thing to do

And how would they fix it? Give you all the items back and take them from the other player? What if the conman here sold or traded items with other players?....are those new players involved now at risk of losing out and having the item erased from them because they bought "stolen merchandise" even though they thought it was a fair and legit trade?

To be very clear: Yes it would be great if there were a fix, but there's not. Turbine outlines the TOS/code of conduct/EULA to explicitly say what they will or won't do and what you can or cannot do. Whether or not you agree is irrelevant. If they did help, it would be great, but to imply they have to is ignorant and unwilling to accept the reality of the situation or see what you're actually owed because you don't like the answer.

Legally, the "right thing to do" is follow their own rules about what they're willing to do. Yes, it sucks, but it was yours and the scammer's fault.

You knew your friend had someone harassing them with a similar name (from the other thread). This could have been prevented with some work on your part. Lucky for you, the community decided to help you out in this. Don't expect more than this. People sometimes make worse mistakes with no compensation from turbine or others.

I apologize if this came off as rude, as it was not my intent, but your argument of Turbine should do it cause it's the right thing is invalid. They have no obligation to fix or moderate your mistake. Accept the blame for what you did, accept the gifts from strangers trying to help, and move on. This thread will come down too, and before you post another after that, know the consequences:

Taking about moderation placed against you or other is against the TOS.

    1) Your post was taken down for violating the forum rules which you were advised to fix but you chose not to.

    2) You freely gave your stuff away without verifying the recipient. Perhaps there was some duplicity involved but the transaction was still made freely.

    3) Giving 60 epic scrolls to a "friend", sorry I just don't believe it without a valid reason why.

I'm sorry this has happened to you, and wow this really sucks.

    BUT

I hate to break this to you, it's not Turbine's fault. Blaming Turbine and demanding (lets be honest you are) them to fix this is like meeting a conman in a restaurant, forking over your life savings, then instead of blaming the conman you seek damages against the restaurant. How is that fair? It's not Turbine's fault you trusted the wrong person, that is squarely on the scam artist's shoulders.

As far as Turbine reimbursing, how does Turbine know that you didn't make a new account (as all you really need for an account is an email address), roll up a toon with a similar name to your friend and give all the stuff over then report the scam? I'm sure that this isn't the case, but you can see where there is potential for someone to do this very thing and in turn scam Turbine. Plus because Turbine helped in one case they'd then have to help in all the cases that reported this scam, potentially causing them to hire more people to weed through and investigate, causing the cost of the pay to play stuff in the game to go up. Then everybody is punished! All because of the actions of one scammer!

Put the blame where it belongs - squarely on the conman's shoulders!

PS - Of course its easier to mod and enforce rules on the forums, there are far fewer posters on the forums than there are players in the game.

Was approached by the same scammer, as was a large part of my guild and other people I know. Luckily noticed that the player they were impersonating was also online and that the scammer was a level 1 character...was easy to verify that it was a hoax.

I do think their priorities are wrong...they do nothing ingame about such scammers but take action against those reporting it?

Doesn't seem quite right. Please protect those who are honest and good, while punishing/banning those who are ruining others good names or out to make some quick ingame cash through deceit. It really is common sense.

However, turbine is in no way at fault for any of this and has no obligation to fix this situation-and in fact the OP risks moderation by pushing the topic further. So maybe best to live and learn.

the person who scammed me is still using alternate accounts to log onto the server and is still harassing my friend. In fact they are currently trying to blackmail her as i type this. They have threatened to keep creating alt accounts and logging in with them for the express purpose of harassing her, and ruining her and her guilds reputation unless she pays.
This is being allowed by turbine, but they have the time to patrol the forums, delete my original post and give me a stern warning, but do nothing on the servers.
Unbelievable. I am assuming that this thread will also get pulled, and i will either recieve another warning or a ban.
Hmm, i get it, penalize the victim's, not the perp. Well done turbine, you are are a shining beacon of courage.

You would best be served reporting harassment and start documenting incidents, as turbine will at least take action with that sometimes. The bit about you blaming them for a trade you got burned on will not result in anything as it is not their domain to get involved.

Frankly, the best thing to do here is to communicate with any potential target guilds that this is occuring, and communicate to not respond or interact with the harasser.

Trolls will starve without attention and eventually wander away on their own, but only if you don't give them any scraps to feed from. This is much, much easier said than done, but it is the only sure way of solving this problem.

While this person obviously has issues, how are they ruining the guild name without the guild tag? If your friend pays anything they will keep at it as they know they were successful in their efforts. If they keep creating accounts, squelching won't help but going anonymous, for your friend, for awhile might. in reality, it only bothers you if you let it. Don't give the harasser power over you or your friend. Ignore them and it will stop. Creating threads, getting yourself in trouble etc. won't help your cause. In the game, there's really nothing someone can do to you unless you let them (other than be annoying). Easy, don't let them. I saw your friend's post to give a warning to the community. This is the right step IMO. She's getting the word out in a respectful way, in a manner that will keep the post on the boards. It will stop eventually.

Just because you can't see what action Turbine has taken (and obviously they have if the harasser has to open up new accounts to continue harassing) doesn't mean that Turbine isn't taking action. Sure they can block this person's isp address, but what's to stop them from going to a library/internet cafe and using the computers there?

Unfortunately virtual world is not like TV depictions of real world (sorry not had real world experience but I've seen it on TV!) where the cops can stake out the victim's house then catch the perp in harassing action. Even then it's not an instantaneous process where your friend walks into a police station and 3 seconds later the perp is being frogmarched into a jail cell with a mountain named Bubba.

This stuff takes time, Turbine has to investigate the claims, then take action. If they just immediately banned whenever someone said "Hey, this person is harassing me" then the harasser could get your friend banned from the game by making that statement.

Best advice, have your friend keep reporting it - make sure that the friend includes copy and pasted statements from the harasser and makes it clear that it is the same person. This gives Turbine the documentation to block the isp.

I know, it seems unfair that your friend has to continuously deal with this abuse but these type of rules are in place for the benefit of all. To protect people from being punished when falsely accused. If it helps ease things a bit, think of it this way - the harasser could be attempting to muddy the waters right now by claiming your friend, you, and all the nice people in the guild are trying to harass him/her/it and because Turbine investigates it's stopped all of you from being banned.

I was also approached by an impersonator, who gave themselves away almost immediately when it became apparent they were assuming I was a man. The name of the character was not the same, but impersonating another well-known person on Cannith server.

I suppose the only action to take is continue to report this person when they pop up, give them nothing, and take a large measure of salt with anyone claiming to be a new or bank alt of someone you know in game.
