Now it's been a while since there's been a new race, but we've had plenty of new classes.
The most prevalent suggestions are Kobold and Gnomes but dare I suggest a third contender? A half-Goblin allows for the player to be a monster race but still retain lore. A Kobold would have quite emotional strife killing its tribal kin however a Half-Goblin even a normal Goblin would have no bars about the same because the situation wouldn't come up.
Gnomes are a logical choice but face it: They're uninteresting: because what you end up with is a Shorter Dwarf. Not particularly a legendary hero. Also the debate on what type of Gnomes to be included is equally endless: with so many different factions from forest to city it'd be difficult to pin down it's stats and enhancements.
Note: Wisdom can be associated with someone struggling to survive and the experience they gained: It's safe to say that any creature that has to fend for itself to survive with little muscle will get wiser.
