    Excerpts from Level 19

Snowslide is a lot of fun to play with. It is somewhat awkward to use for freezing a mass of critters, but as something to quickly enter or escape a fray it is wonderful. Also, Snowslide has a 10-second 50% action boost bonus to run speed (on a 15 second cooldown) allowing for some rather nice sprint capabilities.

Best new use of Sleet Storm: No-save Area-of-Effect instant kill on evil eyes. And for a very low SP cost too.

Yeah, when I tried soloing it on my melee a month or so ago on heroic elite it was impossible, her poison strike does way to much damage to withstand.

Have you found any way to increase the dc of snowslide? Currently away from game on business and my first Druid was multiclassed to much. Have not seen anyone state if evocation feats/items or combat feat increases have been tested.

I haven't done any formal testing, but the ability is classified as an Evocation ability, so like other psuedo-spell Evocations (like Rune Arms), all Evocation DC bonuses should be applicable.

Although, personally, by the time Snowslide made it into my Druid's repertoire, I didn't find myself using it for crowd control purposes. It neither seems to stick all that well by the time Snowslide could be had, nor is it an easy ability to use mid-fight, as the Abundant Leap effect makes you dash out of melee range.

I did that on my caster this life (currently a FVS, solo on Heroic Elite at 18). Actually I found the hardest part of that chain to be SOTO - not the end fight but the first two massive Drow pulls, the ones with 1 or 2 Priestesses and ~10 archers. Died twice on those pulls after being Crippled (constraining normal movement) then blocked in (causing me to misfire Leap of Faith) and dying while 'mashing buttons' (spamming Heal and two Cures) to try to heal through the damage.

Spinner's poison hit for ~120 damage and her melee crits for ~80 (I was at 100% Fortification and you need ~130% to be uncrittable there). Painful but in no way unsurvivable

I kited her in and out of the Silver Flame's aura (each time she enters it she gets a new stack of his debuff, at 8 stacks she is Feared) and put a Bladebarrier on the same spot, and she fell low enough in HP to run off in a reasonable time. Then you have time to hunt spiders and swat other trash - if she appears again, run like hell to the middle.

I scared her off three times and used the shrine during the second one. No resources used (no heal scrolls, no haste potions as I forgot to restock, and certainly no mana pots).
    I don't have a zerging problem.

    I'm zerging. That's YOUR problem.

Each time I died from the poison it was in conjunction with a trip effect (Jarilith or Web Line Trip) or a botched concentration check (as there can be enough chaos going on that I don't realize I'm trying to use Heal just as the poison ticks again). I know I could have beaten it on Elite if I wanted to (given there was a high enough probability to not be poisoned and prone if I played in a manner that helped avoid both elements mixing or let the roll of the dice come out lucky enough), but I was compelled to just get it over with and continue on.

    Heroic Levels (1-19) Summary

It has been a while since I have played a gish-like character (a melee/arcane hybrid), but that is the niche that Druids currently fill, and fill fairly well. Out of the box the Druid is adequate at melee, respectable at damage-based casting, can reasonably incapacitate some critters, carries some staple buffs, and even has healing capability to boot. For someone who likes the melee/arcane type of playstyle, the Druid is a great match. However, for a Druid to feel fully potent, they have to stack on a lot of spells (Creeping Cold, Ice Storm, Body of Sun, Creeping Doom, Word of Balance, Storm of Vengeance, etc.) on top of their melee, and they can only keep this up for short time based on their SP.

The class of Druid wasn't quite as alluring or revitalizing as Artificer when it was released, but I still enjoyed it. For the most part, if feels like every couple of levels you get something to look forward to (such as Wolf Form, Ice Storm, Word of Balance, Body of Sun, Earthquake, Snowslide, etc.). The power gain is fairly well paced.

If I were to do a Druid again, I'd still stick with an 18 Druid/2 Monk (Stunning Fist works quite well and Evasion is currently quite handy with the Elite spell damage increase in certain situations), but I'd up the DEX at the cost of some WIS to use Two Weapon Fighting, instead of Natural Fighting. With the exception of Snowslide, sneak attack damage, and Magic Fang, the animal forms just aren't very compelling to use for melee in the later levels.

Some of my favorite things about the Druid:
    • Ability to have full positive energy healing as a Warforged (it made the vigor and regeneration effects handy to use).
    • Magic Fang (as it gives a pretty nice set of bonuses for melee that scales in level).
    • Takedown for fast tripping (in the lower levels).
    • Creeping Cold and Greater Creeping Cold (which are basically a one-cast death sentence to the lesser critters).
    • Snare (because with a mix of STR damage and penalties, it becomes a full 1-minute unbreakable effect, as a roll of a 20 is not automatic success for attribute rolls).
    • Sleet Storm combined with Freedom of Movement (no-save blindness is very handy as both a defensive mechanism and an offensive mechanism [no DEX bonus to AC, sneak attack capable, kills evil eyes])
    • Ice Storm and Wall of Fire (as they are staple efficient ways to take down a pack of critters)
    • Word of Balance (roughly double the damage of a standard damage spell on a large amount of critters types with no save? Very handy, if SR isn't an issue).
    • Body of the Sun (sure, it is a complete annoyance to use in conjunction with invisibility, but still a respectable fire-based damage over time spell).
    • Earthquake (being it is a reoccurring mass crowd control spell with a decently large amount of things it can affect, it is quite nice)
    • Howl of Terror (Ok, so it doesn't work completely like I expected to as critters aren't actually "paralyzed" with fear, but it has a short cooldown and no reoccurring save)
    • Snowslide (It is Leap of Faith, but for Druids, with a psuedo-Sprint Boost IV. Aim it well, and it becomes an attack and/or crowd control ability. Even better, it lets you dash through creatures for escaping things! It is just plain awesome)
    • Damage Over Time stacking galore (add a Creeping Cold, and a Greater Creeping Cold, and an Ice Storm, and a Creeping Doom, and a Body of the Sun, and a Storm of Vengeance, and a ...)
    • Reaving Roar (If you are alone or in a small group, it does a sizable amount of damage. Between levels 7 to 16 it helps you easily dominate clusters of critters).
    • Wolf Sneaking (I'm normally not a sucker for graphics and animations, but it is oddly endearing to me).

    Druidic Annoyances
    • Inability to use ranged weapons in an animal form. It makes things a touch aggravating to hit the ranged levers.
    • The bug that makes the Druid hop continuously in normal or elemental form when they shift out of an animal form while running.
    • The graphic for Regeneration going off even after Regeneration has expired.
    • Dogdog blisses out into AI purgatory after slaying a box or a critter dies near Dogdog.
    • Inconsistency on the permanency of weapon enchantments. Magic Fang fades on switching a weapon or form, but Fires of Purity stays until the duration expires.
    • Monsters that were once Poison Immune are fully immune to the damage from Creeping Doom, even though by the new rules, they should only have Poison Resistance 10.
    • Ice Flowers states it has a duration of 8 seconds, but only fires off a single time.
    • Howl of Terror states it is a paralysis effect via fear, but doesn't actually cause paralysis (helplessness).
    • Some creatures that can normally be blinded by effects like Blindness or Sunburst are immune to the blindness of Sunbeam.
    • Beastial Nature and Reaving Roar shut off after dying.
    • All Druidic area of effect instant damage-focused spells are either a long cast (Fire Trap) or delayed effect strikes (Flame Strike, Fire Storm, Ice Flowers).
    • Innate attacks are unable to be used under anti-magic or feebleminded/silenced situations.

Being Dogdog's innate run speed (from Striding) stacks with effects like Haste, he can really zip around. I've found him to be handy for the defense-based Eveningstar challenges.

Did you consider taking a level of ranger as your 20th level instead of druid 18? Because to me it seems that all you don't lose all that much (8th level and 9th level slot, one caster level, 1 spell pen), while you get quite a bit of nice stuff (sprint boost, favored enemy, slightly higher saves, some skill points, some spell points considering you only lose 90 SP from druid 18 and you get 10 SP for each point of wis mod unless I misunderstood something, meaning you get more SP if your wis is 30 or higher).

    Losses
8th level and 9th level slot
I am in Wolf Form most of the time and I actually make use of the extra 8th and 9th level spell slot quite a bit. On the 8th level spells I'm often carrying Heal (vital), Earthquake (very useful), Finger of Death (handy), and Howl of Terror (also handy). On the 9th level spells I'm often carrying Snowslide (very awesome), Storm of Vengeance (very useful), and Regenerate Mass (quick cast time and cooldown, useful for when I'm using Dogdog, frees up a 7th level spell slot). I find I do use the spell slots from my 18th level of Druid.

    one caster level
Depending on the spell, and the fact that I won't be using Shiradi Champion during this Diary of a True Reincarnate, this accounts for a 0% to 10% damage increase on particular spells, many of which I do use (Creeping Cold, Greater Creeping Cold, Creeping Doom, Word of Balance, Regenerate Mass, Body of Sun, etc.)

    1 spell pen
I generally only find this a benefit with Word of Balance and Finger of Death with my current playstyle.

    Gains
    sprint boost
The main reason that I would have taken a level of ranger. However, it is no where as alluring for a Druid who primarily uses Wolf Form, as Snowslide grants a 50% Action Boost bonus to movement speed (making it effectively capable of acting like Sprint Boost IV).

    favored enemy
+3 damage to a particular monster type... meh

    slightly higher saves
It would be a net change of +1 fortitude, +1 reflex, -1 will. It would be nice as it would help my lower saves, but I'll do fine without.

    some skill points
Netting +3 skill points in skills that are either fine as is, already maxed, or would get little use.

    some spell points
I'm usually around a WIS of 34, so it would net 18 Spell Points.

Does snowslide not stack with sprint boost? Because while I didn't actually say it, but sprint boost would be the main benefit to get out of the multiclassing. I thought they stacked, but if they do not then I easily see why it won't really be all that useful. I was considering how snowslide and sprint boost together might be a really nice option if you really need to lose certain mobs behind (especially if red alert of the like is stopping you from running away, although you do not really seem to struggle with that a lot :P )

    Hey MrCow,

I always got mad respect for your post and your diaries. A couple of questions since I am starting a druid:

    1) How did you like the monk mix? I went the same way. However, I am a fleshie guy just can't wrap my head around warforged. I went half-elf with 16 dex and 16 wisdom, plan on usiing weapon finesse allowing me to dump str a bit. Do you think this is viable?

    2) Is giving up the capstone worth it?

    thanks

I enjoyed the 2 levels of monk for the Druid. I'm still of the belief that it overall enhances how I use the Druid, instead of detracting (due to Evasion, Stunning Fist, the ease of fitting in Toughness, the fact that as a Warforged Druid I'm stuck in Composite Body, and so on).

I know I favor STR-based characters over DEX-based characters, so I will refrain from answering this as I know I am biased against Weapon Finesse.

Most of the spells I use tend to be Evocation towards the later quests, so I don't feel I am missing Hierophant (and the Monk's Ocean stance allows me to fill in for the +2 WIS it would also bring).

The ability to recast spells faster from Natural Adept in Wolf form (which is the form I use the most) would be nice, but I find that I generally don't have a problem in that regard.

Thanks for the answers and the honesty on the weapon finesse question. I will let you know how that plays out.

This has been my take on it as well. I’m really hoping Turbine resists the urge to go full retard with the casting aspect and instead brings out more of the more gish aspects of the class. If someone really needs to play an “elemental caster” then they have the sorceror class.
Things that if Turbine went all EXTREME PREJUDICE™ on, would actually make the game fun again.:
    • Giving us the racial PrE’s we were promised, before rolling out DDOStore™ Enhancement Trees.
    • Fixing physical defense for Rangers and Rogues. It’s ridiculous that you’re better off wearing Heavy Armor and ignoring your innate feats on these classes.
    • Cannith Crafting.
    • Update the named loot to put them on the same system.
    • Fixing the Cannith Challenges so that they can be 6 starred without incredible luck or store bought items.
    • Fixing all challenges to give us decent XP and ingredient returns for the unreasonable time we have to spend in most of them.

    Excerpts from Level 24

About 14 hours to cap the Epic levels by doing nearly all of the Epic non-raids on Normal and Hard, not all that lengthy a process, and I raked in 18 Epic Dungeon Tokens (which nearly covers a True Reincarnation).

Doing the quests on Epic Normal is often a far better EXP gain for the time invested, as the critters (notably the boss critters) have a sizable amount of HP on Epic Hard.

The doublestrike feat is called natural fighting, not natural attack; made it a bit tricky to find on DDOwiki.
