Default Weekend Warriors #2 - Jorasco Medics (halfling ftr 12 / rogue 2)

Preamble: the Weekend Warriors are an on-going series of build posts by yours truly. The goal is to come up with F2P-friendly builds for newcomers or those with limited resources who are looking for something a bit off the beaten path from all the (usually very good) cookie-cutter builds out there, without being too gimpy. The idea, as you may have inferred from the title, is to come up with at least one build each week. Self-imposed constraints for the Weekend Warriors: 28 pts, F2P classes & races (plus drow, as it's not hard to unlock them as F2P thru Favor), modest gear & tome requirements (ideally none).

    Previous Weekend Warriors:

The idea this time was a melee-focused mini-medic using the halfling Dragonmarks for extra healing oomph, as well as UMD & Evasion. In my view, the halfling DMs are only worth taking if (A) your build has plenty of feats to spare and (B) can squeeze in some or all of the Empower/Emp Heal/Maximize "holy trinity" of metamagics to boost their output, but (C) do not otherwise get Cure / Heal spells (i.e., clerics, Favored Souls, bards). Even then, we're still talking about characters which use up to six feats to be a part-time healer, at best. Hence the "medic" appellation; the DMs are there to help you haul someone's bacon (inc. your own) outta the fire in an emergency, nothing more.

NOTE: in order to take the Dragonmarks, you must first complete the Hall of the Mark quest with a character on that server (doesn't have to be the one you plan to add DMs to, though). Once you do, the DMs become available to all your chars on that server.

I have two versions of this build: a TWF ranger-based one and a THF paladin-based one. In both cases, rgr & pally provides Devotion II (+20% to all three DMs) and access to Emp & Max feats (+150% to Least & Lesser DM); and can start using Cure wands at lvl 2. In terms of ranger vs. paladin:

    • Ranger 6 provides a bunch more feats (in particular a few archery feats so you have a ranged burst DPS option when need be), two Favored Enemies, and Ram's Might. Also TWF DPS beats THF DPS in the long run, although even the rgr is likely to use 2H weapons early on (due to low to-hit & offhand proc chance). She only needs +1 DEX tome before lvl 13, which hopefully doable for anyone by then - either by grinding for tome drops (which start showing up ~lvl 10) or making money to buy one off the Auction House.
    • Paladin 6 provides higher saves, fear & disease immunity, access to Empower Heal (+50% to all 3 DMs), Divine Favor, and Divine Might I (w/+2 CHA tome - see below). I'm also able to take rogue 2 sooner than the rgr build (see below), gaining Evasion and Wand & Scroll Mastery I that much sooner.

    First up, the ranger:

Now some of the drawbacks of this build:

    • The metamagics are backloaded - Max @ lvl 12, Emp @ lvl 15 - meaning the full power of the Least & Lesser DMs don't kick in until quite late.
    • With base INT 8, I have to delay rogue 2 until lvl 20 in order to max UMD, meaning she doesn't get Evasion & W&S Mastery I until endgame.
    • You may notice I don't take the Tempest I PrE; that's deliberate, as there's no way to squeeze in the three pre-req feats without sacrificing more important feats, IMHO, and Tempest I doesn't boost DPS nearly as much as it used to. [When the new Enhancement "trees" go live, it will hopefully be easier to incorporate Tempest.]

If you don't have a +2 CHA tome, drop Divine Might I.

As mentioned before, the main advantages of using paladin instead of ranger are being able to add Emp Heal and taking rogue 2 much sooner; though the higher saves, immunities, etc. are nice too. The main disadvantage is lower DPS; partly because TWF beats THF, but also because I don't have enough feats to spare for the entire THF chain without sacrificing feats I deem more important. So I skip the THF feats to add a couple more tactics feats instead (Imp Sunder, Hamstring). Learning the fine art of twitching will help your DPS.

There are also a few disadvantages to being Lawful Good: vulnerability to Unholy dmg (particularly prevalent in higher lvls), negative level penalty when using evil-tainted or Anarchic gear, and unable to use Stability items. The silver lining is being able to use Pure Good & True Law weapons before your UMD hits 20.

While leveling, I think HotD I is the most useful of the PrEs, mostly for the +10% heal amp. Later on, though, you'll most likely respec into KotC I once you start tackling more evil outsiders. I've specced her for greatsword Kensai on the presumption the player will be aiming to make the Sword of Shadow their primary DPS weapon; but until one has it, make whatever is your best weapon your Kensai spec.

Have updated both posts with some explanations as well as a pally-based build to complement the rgr-based one.

Are you planning to update these for post-U19 use?

Just asking... and although I've allocated two of my preexisting halflings to the different 13/6/1 "mech-sniper medic" variants and one to pure rogue, that wasn't all of them (though I don't have a Lawful Good halfling) and I also noticed that I don't have a single mostly-Fighter toon for some reason...
No longer completely f2p as of November 2014. Father of 3 more DDO players so far (I do have more children than that).

Possibly, although there are only a few tweaks necessary, I think. Toughness is no longer the must-have it once was; it can be either backloaded or dropped. Which is good, because you'll want GWF:Slash to pick up Weapon Spec IV + Keen Edge from Kensei. Lesser DMs no longer exist as feats, so that lets you move up the metamagics sooner and frees up another feat slot later on; the downside is having to spend at least 12 APs in halfling tree for Greater DM.

The tricky question I haven't decided: should I boost INT for enough skill pts to max Heal (since that now boosts Pos Spellpower); and if so, where should I take it from?

BTW, I plan to post a halfling version of my just-posted Faithsworn Hunter, if that interests you as well.

Oh, it does, there's just the alignment problem.

Well, it's not like the Greater DM is needed all that soon if you have Maximize... and maybe leeches...

So. Feat progression something like this, maybe? (Didn't take Improved Sunder there, would it be important? But now it'd qualify for Overwhelming Critical with just a +2 tome, and... I just happen to have the birthday box on my spare halfling ;-) ... I suppose the +1 dex tome could be found somewhere even if tome prices in the AH seem to have gone up a whole lot.

Yeah, right, I'm not sure if Dodge and Iron Will are actually good ideas anyway, instead of the Improved Sunder. (Point Blank Shot and/or Imp Crit ranged, maybe? Manyshot is there already so...)

Plenty of stuff would be nice to be able to take earlier, if not for BAB and fighter level requirements.

It was 1:1 +spellpower from Heal, right? That'd mean it'd end up +23 at max, so... not all that much compared to what you can get from items and elsewhere, it seems. Especially if +skill items count the same anyway.

I would delay WF:Slash; move Power Atk or khopesh to lvl 3. I would also drop Iron Will so you can move up GC and take GWS at ftr 12; it's only +2 dmg, but DPS is DPS. Dodge isn't essential, but being able to add extra Dodge from halfling or Kensei tree is not a bad idea. Since you didn't bump up INT, I would max Heal on rgr lvls; 10 ranks + 15 item is 25 Pos Spellpower for almost no effort (apart from figuring out where to slot a Heal skill item). Which is good because DWS Devotion is about to be (or just got) nerfed.

Hm, it says level 21 is Rogue instead of Epic, well, first release of the 4.x planner... did it do that in 3.x? Don't remember.

Oh well. The others want to play on that server with low-level toons now so I'll just LR+20 now using this plan and fix things afterwards if it's badly off, or something.

Your UMD score looks a little low; I'm presuming that's because you didn't distribute all your skill pts or something. Otherwise it looks fine. And hey, thanks for letting me know the builder's finally been updated!

Oh, I did distribute them, after a fashion. I think I might have to pull occasional tank duty with this toon so I put the 12 ftr skill points into Intimidate in the builder, just to see where it ends up.

Comes out to possibly max UMD if I put all 12*½ there, though, and I guess UMD will probably be more useful in the end... not like I'm at the fighter levels yet anyway.

    Oh, and the builder...

Well, it's not like DDO is a fixed target anyway, with how things seem to change without notice or even after-the-fact acknowledgement in the release notes...
