    Default Versatile DoS 2 Tank: 15 paladin/3 monk/2 fighter

I am currently not very satisfied with my 18/2 self-healing KotC paladin, and I am exploring other options for him. I noticed that he's not a very good choice for DPS, even against evil outsiders. This cannot be changed unless I TR him to a different class, or the enhancement revamp gives him a substantial boost. One of his current key features is his self-sufficiency, in particular the combination of Torc + CO and Maximized, Quickened Heals. If I change his build, I want to have one which utilizes these items.

I was thinking to add more versatility. By giving up tier 3 of KotC, I will lose some DPS against Outsiders, but if I get DoS 2 instead, my ability to maintain aggro in tank situations will probably be better than before. 3 Monk levels allow me to serve as a Light Monk for ToD and LoB, if there is none, and the Fighter levels provide the feats to be able to get the metamagic feats.

The skills are just a try to see how far I can come with just 8 Base Int. I'm guessing that I wouldn't actually run a char with as few as 7 ranks in UMD. Also, class and feat order might have optimization potential.

Ending stats are subject to change, depending on the tome and gear situation. I am aware of the fact that Greater Human Adaptability can help to even out another stat, if I manage to free the APs for it.

    Useful numbers:

    AC aimed for: 0.
    Hit points: 431 naked, 10 draconic, 20 toughness item, 45 GS, 30 GFL, 60 Con item = 596 standing.
    Situational: 20 Ship, 20 Rage, 40 Stance = 676, with stance bonus: 777.
    Healing Amplification: Human (30%), Monk (10%), Claw Gloves(30%), Ship (10%). 1.3*1.1*1.3*.1.1 = 204% HAmp.

The typical weapons used would be dual Khopeshes, Khopesh + Shield when tanking, and switching to handwraps when needing to grasp.

Questions which I have about this kind of build:
    • Is Shield Mastery necessary? The build qualifies for DoS anyway.
    • Is HotD a better Choice than DoS due to its healing amp?
    • Is Intimidate needed?
    • Does my choice of weapons sound reasonable?
    • Is it OK if I only take HV3, and not HV4?

I'm also pondering to TR Flodur, so if it was a TR build, it would get +1 Str, and a passive Paladin past life.

Do you want to be a great tank or not? That will answer your questions. If you do want to tank, then consider looking at The Dark Knight 18 paladin/2 fighter: http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=345344.

Thanks for the link. I'm a bit addicted to Evasion splashes, I have to admit.

I don't plan for a single-purpose character, but having a character who can tank well would be very nice, indeed. I don't want to be the best tank on my server, but I want to have a paladin who is not useless in raids.

Some of these questions are answered by the aim of being a tank, indeed, in particular the Shield Mastery issue and the choice of DoS over HotD.

But still: Can you tank successfully without needing to rely on Intimidate?

How far behind an EChimera's Fang is a +5 Holy Burst Silver Khopesh of Greater Lawful Outsider Bane, if at all?

You have to decide what you want to do with him, if you make too many utility uses for him then he will be less tanky and less dps.

As a tank you should focus on AC, threat, health, healing amp, DR, and damage mitigation from sheilds.

I would forget about self healing and being a light monk for tod.

I personally have a utility build that is quite fun to use, but I would never consider him to be a tank or a 100% dps. If you are set on evasion, then i would make 2 monk instead of 3, and use a bastard sword and a sheild, combined with light armor. That way you will get evasion.

Consider making him human for healing amp, and sentinal dragon marks for use with the chimera's fang (epic). It will be challenging leveling up, but you will not need an improved crit feat or a bastard sword feat to use it.

Paladins can make great dps also, you just have to decide which route to go for. You cannot spread yourself too thin.

IIRC, a +5 HB silver X of GLOB blows just about everything out of the water, with the exception of an eSoS on a high strength character.

I am using a the same build on my pally and I think he really does good dps especially against bosses!
The fabricators set(working on claw) and the KotC ToD set bonus really got him going.

Going to TR into fighter 12 pally 6 monk 2 for the fighter life then I might go DoS on the last life but that is going to take me a long long time as I have a very limited time to play.

I do agree on the evasion it really gets addictive even thinking of ways to get evasion on my sorc without gimping him!

What kind of weapons do you use on non evil outsiders?

I am making 1 litII and 1 alchemical for offhand but will make water khopeshes first like the cc
