Default Request for help: drow paladin with rogue splash

First a little background. Three rl players playing DDO very casually (no raid, no end game - at least on our current builds). Anyway, other two play cleric and ranger (pure) but traps are challenging without any rogue skills in the fixed group.

So I came up with an idea to make a drow paladin tank with rogue splash for spotting and disabling traps.

I was thinking 2 rog/18 pal - but am open to other suggestions - but please keep in mind that he would be needed to spot and disable traps as well as tank - dps is a secondary concern.

    Hi there,

I decided to take a crack at what you're asking for. Before I post the build, however, there's a few things you should be aware of regarding tanking in DDO. Generally, there are two ways of tanking. One is to generate the most threat against a particular enemy, where threat is your damage dealt multiplied by some threat modifier. The second method uses the Intimidate skill to grab the attention of all enemies within a certain range, and pulls their attention towards you.

The first method is very useful against bosses where you can keep their attention on one person who is, in an ideal world, very sturdy and easy to heal. I'm guessing that this is what you have in mind for your character, but I'm not sure it is ideally suited to your needs. You see, main tanks like this are really only necessary against the end bosses of raids and epics, which you say you are not interested in running. So then you will be building a beefy main-tank... with nothing to tank.

The second type of build is, perhaps, better suited to your situation. This build can run into a big group of enemies, Intimidate them all at once, then hide behind their shield while swinging a bastard sword while the ranger kills everything without taking any damage. This type of character is great for normal questing, if you're playing with a group that is patient enough to allow them to shine... such as 3 RL friends all playing together... you see where I'm going with this? The only problem is that maxing Intimidate brings you up to 4 skills that need to be as high as possible for you to be effective as a trapper and intimi-tank (spot, search, disable, and intimidate). This is very tough to achieve with so many paladin levels, which are incredibly short on skill points. Thankfully for you, there is some nice synergy between the roles of the rogue going first to find traps and the intimi-tank going first to gather up your foes. To achieve all of this I sacrificed some skill points into spot, which means you'll likely be finding some of the traps with your face. But that's OK because you're built to handle it. Just go in with light armor on, so your evasion will work, and your shield out so you wont get spanked when you hit intimidate. If you are getting in trouble because you're getting hit too much, then you'll just have to drop evasion and equip some heavy armor to get your AC up.

    So here's the build:

Not a great idea, in my experience, unless you take a lot of rogue levels or gimp 1 or more stats to pump up INT, simply because paladins don't get enough skill pts. What you should've done is persuade the ranger to play one of my Tempest trapmonkeys; then you could play, say, a pure TWF drow paladin who acts as a de facto hate tank.

It would be much easier to deal with traps if you talked the Ranger into throwing a single Rogue level in at creation. A Ranger has the skill points to spare, so that trapping won't be an issue. A paladin does not have that luxury without gimping himself in some other way.

Thanks for the advice, it's highly appreciated.

We used to play EQ1, EQ2 and WoW since 2000 - more or less together, and I've certainly done my share of min/maxing playstyle (which I enjoy) - but now we've all gotten families and kids, and we don't have the same amount of time to devote to gaming.

I just thought I'd be doing something different for a challenge, and nevermind if the character isn't going to be great in all the usual aspects (dps/tanking) - the other guys are stuck with him anyway

Thanks for the help, the paladin is currently level 7 (1rog/6pal).

Now, I've chosen to go with the Hunter of the Dead prestige enhancement and am looking for some advice on which weapons to carry around.

So far, I'm able to craft "Holy" / "of Pure Good" weapons, and am looking at making such a bastard sword for general/all purpose - would that be a prudent choice?

I already have a mace (cold iron) that is Holy of Pure Good and it's decent for bashing skeletons.

Khopeshes if you took the proficiency, rapiers if you didn't.
