That what I did and allowed ppl todo back in GM days of 1991-1995, AD&D mostly, a little DnD 1st. Pick class, then 3d6 x6, done, off to the cave and fight the rust monster on the left

Though I did allow, after some fast deaths on appaling chars from players, decide to ease to roll 6x 3d6 and then choose what belonged to which stat and then pick a class. After all ppl are born with some stat distro and then pick what class they wanna specialize in while growing up, so class after stats made alot more sense to my players.

I do agree on a hard line, though it cost some players over that time and lack of progress(dying or players bailing/"backing out on" adventures I spent hours making) because of this cost the last players and the group closed. All to avoid the much worse power creep.

    On a similar note, I have had 1 character that had an extremely weird stat roll - 18, 18, 18, 3, 3, 3.

I ended up putting the 18s in STR, DEX, and CON, with the 3s in INT, WIS, and CHA. He understood exactly 1 word - smash.

Needless to say he was the party meat shield until he got dominated by a vampire and killed half the party.

I am NOT trolling, but are you using GM instead of DM on purpose? I haven't PnP'ed since 2.5; so if they changed it to game master or some such, I truthfully don't know- is that new?

Once had a friend, back in AD&D days almost always come out with 18/00 STR on his melees, I'd even watch him roll and there didn't seem to be any crazy tricks (unless his dice were loaded) but he almost ways seemed to get that double 0.

At least one of those characters he decided to headbutt a tombstone, rolled a 1, had a critical failure roll (can't remember what the DM had him roll), rolled 1 on that, thus breaking his neck and being a perma-parapeligic, lol.

that's true pnp, from 3 t o18, in order so u'll probably have a good class with some gimp stat (high str, average dex, low con, high int, low wis and high cha for example)

and choose the race &/or class depending your dices

we used to put at least 1 stat at 16 (if u have none over 14, usually we chose the main stat)

    LOL.
We had a similar half orc. Luckily I had (and still have) a Rogue with 20 in strenght (18+level ups) with improved trip and a spiked chain that kept throwing him to the floor, while the cleric "healed" the vampire.

People should embrace the low roll. It gives you a better starting point to actually RP. Best fighter I ever had only had a 16 STR.
Well I wouldnt call a 16 a low str I like the new hackmaster 3d6 all stats in order can do some minor rearranging but at a penalty with some minor rules for playable characters like at least one 13 and no 2 stats 5 or lower its defenitly more for nonpower gamers.

Do you think somebody in the world has ever rolled 6x18? Even accepting three rolls for character, picking the best roll, or making two rolls with 4d6, and discarding the lowest dice.
I guess in some parallel universe I have such a character...
Ive never rolled all the dice at once. I roll 1 at a time and place the dice on the table with the number 1 face up. I also wont roll on a hard surface (dice tend to bounce around a lot) so I use a folder with papers in it. Doing so tends to earn me a 13 or better, Ive had as many as three 18's but never an all 18 stat spread.

4d6 drop lowest gives a 21/1296 chance of an 18, so chances of six are only 1 in 55,247,704,847. But wait! There is more to it than this. Because there are races with bonuses. Let us assume that the real goal is "all 18 or better".

If you only need 16s, you get to a mere 1-in-203,380; 4d6 drop 1 has a 13% or so chance of giving you a 16 or better. So... *drags out Savage Species*. Hmm. 35% chance of a 14 or better. How about a djinni? Stat mods are +8/+8/+4/+4/+4/+4. You need two ten or better and four 14 or better. That's not quite even odds, but it's hardly implausible. Ohh, greater barghest; four +8, two +4. Your chances of getting that are decent. The lillend looks particuarly good; +10/+8/+6/+6/+4/+4. That gives you a spread; you can have one roll as low as an 8, one as low as 10, two as low as 12, and two 14+, and still make all 18s. Of course, that's a starting ECL of 13. :P

My second ever DnD character I ever rolled came damn close using a (witnessed) 4d6 drop lowest die. I got 5 18's and a 17 along with an interest (in junior high) in probability.

And--in case you're wondering--I dumped Charisma and it was a Halfling Thief. (Red Box basic DnD) I can't remember what the actual stats became after adding in the racial modifiers.

The best character I ever rolled has become something of a fisherman's tale amid my old gaming group. It was for 3rd/3.5, and using the standard there of roll 4d6, discard the lowest. I rolled straight down the line, four 18's, two 17's.

The problem with this is that the only witness to this personal achievement was the DM for the campaign. That in itself is normally not a problem, but the DM was the biggest egocentric bag of hot air I or my friends had come to know. For an example, if you proved (repeatedly) you were better then he at something, if you were present when he were socializing with others, you and he were "equals" at the task/game/whatnot. When you weren't present, he claimed he was the better man.

While my gaming group was more then willing to give me the benefit of the doubt despite the only witness being horribly unreliable, I instead opted to have this character go down as an ongoing joke and reference for our group.

    Default tone it down

I'd never use the point system before DDO. We used to play 4d6, discard 1d. We also used to allow players to distribute their scores to their stats to create the character they wanted. That worked in AD&D. I'd love that here, instead of the Max-gamer that the system attracts.

In fact I'd love DDO to be much more like the old game in terms of buying kit and getting magic items. I t cost 400pp to buy basic plate armour. I was lev 3 before I got my first +1 longsword and it meant something. Now it's something you run of to the pub to sell for pint of beer.
