    Default The Pauper's Ranged Monster - 28-pt elf AA Kensai (ftr 12 / rgr 6 / rogue 2)

    Are you a newbie who's fallen in love with Helves Angel but doesn't have what it takes to make one (i.e., half-elves, monk, and a pally past life)? Do you love the combination of archery and melee in AA rangers but hate how squishy they are or wish you did more melee damage? Do you just like pretending you have pointy ears and going "PEW PEW PEW!" in chat but want to be something more than YAPER (Yet Another Pure Elven Ranger)? [Hey, what happens in Eberron stays in Eberron.] Then have I got a build for you!

    As with Helves Angel and similar builds, the idea is to take advantage of the burst DPS from Manyshot + Haste Boost IV + imbues (+ Imp Prec Shot + Slaying arrows once you have them); then switch to TWF while MS is on cooldown. DPS is lower than Helves Angel (-2 base STR, 3D6 SA from rogue dilly vs 1D6+3 from rogue splash, no pally past life), but is still pretty respectable and is a (mostly) F2P-friendly build: 28-pt elf using only base classes; needs a +2 DEX tome for IPS and +2 STR tome for Overwhelming Crit.

    Pros: pretty good ranged & melee DPS; a lot more HPs than a pure ranger (+50 as presented given identical stats); UMD; Evasion; rgr wands & lvl 1 spells provide some useful buffs & self-sufficiency early on.

    Cons: Base INT 8 and no +2 tome means you have to delay rogue 2 until lvl 20 in order to max out UMD, which means no Evasion until epic lvls; "monkchers" who go for 10,000 Stars have stolen the thunder of other AA builds; no room for any tactics feats.

    I've done two versions: one is a longbow Kensei with Precision; the other is a scimitar Kensei w/out it. Naturally, the first build has better ranged DPS while the second has better melee DPS. They're identical until lvl 11, so you have some time to decide which path to take.

    Epic feats for both builds: Overwhelming Critical (req's base STR 23 = 16 + 5 lvl-ups + 2 tome) and Combat Archery (req's base DEX 21 = 17 + 3 tome + 1 lvl-up)
    If you prefer rapiers on either build, swap the Slashing feats for Piercing and Valenar enhs for Aerenal.
    Tomes: if you don't have a +2 DEX tome by lvl 12, you can delay IPS by moving up all the subsequent feats one slot. GWS has to be taken at ftr 12 and the epic feats are spoken for, though, so IPS has to be taken no later than lvl 18.

    Weapons: For melee, early on I would use the best 2H weapon you can find (like a Carnifex or keen falchion); once you have ITWF from rgr 6 and IC Slash, I'd use scimitars until you take khopesh. For archery, try to get your hands on a Silver Longbow ASAP: partly for the Holy dmg, mostly for the 19-20 crit range. Later on, try to get a Bow of Sinew from "The Taken."

    For skills I went for max UMD, with extra pts put into Spot & Open Lock; with high DEX and decent gear, most locks should give you no trouble. If you happen to have a +2 INT tome you can take at lvl 7, that would let you take rogue 2 much sooner (say around lvl 10), as you would then have enough skill pts to max UMD on your ftr lvls.

    This version takes the first two Shadow Dragonmarks: partly for flavor, but mostly for Displacement from Lesser DM, which is a welcome boost to one's survivability. The downside is some of the DPS feats get pushed back a few levels to make room for it. I also went longbow Kensai in part because there's not enough feats to go with melee instead. APs also get tight with squeezing in the Extra DM enhs; I dropped some of the to-hit bonuses to make room for them.

    The level 18 feat is up for debate: I would go with either Extend for longer Displacements, khopesh prof (use Min2), or Imp Crit Slash or Pierce (using either scimitars, rapiers, or heavy picks).

    To be honest, I'd rather do this with a monk splash instead of rogue - the two extra feats would really help out - but present it as-is for consideration.

    Sure, although I may start a new thread, since the U19 changes means there's a lot more versatility to this combo than there was before. But presuming you wanna stick with elf, the main changes are: drop Mental Toughness and WF:Ranged (unless going longbow Kensei); Toughness is no longer the de facto must-have it used to be; add Gtr Weap Focus for Kensei.

    HE rog dilly doesn't unlock rog skills, unfortunately; it just lets you add some sneak atk, which doesn't stack w/rog splash, so it would be redundant for this build.
    This ranged (longbow/longsword) seemed to be going well until the Enhancement pass(over).
    It should still do all the things it was originally designed to do - i.e., Manyshot (w/IPS) + TWF - but the Enhancement overhaul basically means you either have to specialize your APs in one area or spread yourself thru multiple trees to grab the best of the "low-hanging fruit," as it were.
