    Default Orkmonkulous - DPS dark monk (a build by request)

    Objectives
    I got this request while on line playing and the gist of it was a maximum DPS Half-Orc. I’d actually rolled something like that up for myself since I didn’t have much experience with a pure monk (having mostly used it as a splash class). I didn’t do my build with a full plan but this ended up near identical. 32pts was requested but only minimal +1 tome use to meet requirements.

    Design
    Given a simple mission, we have a fairly simple build. Dark monk is the clear winner for Monk DPS and Half Orc the clear winner for a DPS race. Monk doesn’t take full advantage of Half-Orc’s many glories but even using half of them is significant.

    I wanted to start with a full 20 strength but in the end you need stat points in other areas to qualify for the stance enhancements. With +2 tomes you might get there, but with +1 it just didn’t work. 18 is quite respectable and in return you get better elemental strike options and better rounded defenses. Dex and wisdom are not going to deliver killer AC, but for saves and DC values they will be sufficient.

    Feats are pretty easy, the usual TWF chain, Toughness, and IC blunt are kind of a given. With our high orcish strength, stunning blow is a good option, and while wisdom is modest, a pure monk can do well with stunning fist too. Slap on some good stunning hand wraps and DC’s should be decent enough to land them fairly often.

    Enhancements were the hard part, I always find them a challenge on monks and its very much about how you want to cap them out. The Void series are good strikes, and the earth stance strikes are very nice. I like the extra dps from ninja spy but it does eat up scarce AP (and a feat for dodge). In the end, I couldn’t quite hit void 4, touch of death, and ninja spy together and I liked the benefits of ninja spy a bit more than void 4. So in the end its void 3, Touch of Death, ninja Spy and max fire stance. Of course we need to crank up the strength and the hork Power attack to really use the races DPS benefits.

    And presto, about as DPS focused a monk as you can make. Add gear to taste and beat the stuffing out of things. If the build has a weakness it is the somewhat low HP. Not that its shorted here, but monk is not a high HP class and this build doesn’t have killer AC so you do need to watch yourself. The heavy stunning should help pacify but I would try to avoid pulling agro from raid bosses and the like as they will chew you up pretty fast compared to other types of tanks. A little investment in agro reduction would be a good play here.

    Play
    Ideally you want to play this a bit like a rogue and pull as little agro as possible. Stunning focus means its less of a worry, but ultimately your DPS is best when you are sneak attacking and your HP are not as good as the full bab classes. Also, be kind to your healers and stock up on pots.

    As with any full monk, you really want to master your attack sequences to maximise damage and make the best use of Ki. I’d suggest mostly using fire stance for its enhanced ki generation.

    Variations
    You could try different sets of enhancements to play around with what is available and what style you like to run. I’d generally steer clear of 28pts (on almost any monk), but its doable if you reduce strength to 16. They build would also work fine for other races, but you would be giving up some DPS.

    If you want top DPS, take wind IV rather than fire IV. You have the base stats for it, just need a +2 dex tome. Otherwise, looks good.

    Edit: also, I don't see void IV anywhere. Either void IV or void zero. If you're worried about tomes, by the time you hit 20, you should have the tomes available to make it work.
