Default Attack of the Bardchers! (bard AA builds)

EDIT (11/19/12): a lot's changed since I originally posted these builds. In particular, epic levels, feats, and Destinies have been added; also "monkchers" have stolen the spotlight from other AA builds. The core concept for this build remains unchanged, though: a bard-based Arcane Archer with a mix of ranged DPS and support abilities (heals, buffs, CC via songs). I've updated the first two builds.

Figured I should put my AA bard builds into their own thread so I'll stop spamming them into other people's threads.

I should preface this by saying I see these as support characters. So please don't bother pointing out how a Kensai AA like Helves Angels or even a plain vanilla pure ranger will have higher ranged DPS - I know that. The idea is a build which can help out the party in various ways: she buffs the party before a fight with songs & spells; she can mez mobs with her CC songs; she can serve as a backup (or even primary if properly geared) healer with Cure wands, Heal scrolls, and (Mass) Cure spells; and she can provide decent ranged DPS from safely behind the front lines when she isn't doing the rest.

My first two Bardcher builds are bard 16 / ranger 2 / fighter 2. I feel this combo gives the optimal mix of bard abilities and ranged feats. Rgr is for the free feats (Bow STR & Rapid Shot) as well as low-lvl access to rgr wands (mostly Energy Resist/Protection); ftr is for the feats, Haste Boost, and +1 STR enh (if necessary). The first version is a 28-pt elf Virtuoso; the second is a 32-pt half-elf Spellsinger. As you'll see, they're pretty similar in most respects - just slightly different feats & enhs - and you could swap to SS on the elf or Virt on the HE. [I'm a bit lukewarm on adding Warchanter to this build these days; two melee-specific feats for a ranged- and heal-centric build seems like a waste.]

Skills: Concentration, Perform, and UMD are the key ones and should be maxed out. After that, it's up to you. I went with Spot because I like being able to see enemies trying to sneak up on me; plus some Balance & Move Silently. But other options include Balance, Jump, Diplomacy, or Haggle.

Tomes: the +1 DEX tome is necessary to take Imp Precise Shot; the +3 DEX is for Combat Archery. The STR & CON tomes are optional but obviously desirable.
Stats: if you already have some CHA gear or can afford Eagle's Splendor wands, you could start CHA 8; that would let you bump up STR to 15 or INT to 10 for more skill pts.

If you want to include melee as well, instead of Precision & Extend you could take Power Atk & Imp Crit Slash and use falchions OR ITWF & GTWF to use scimitars or rapiers. In either case you may want to add in the relevant Valenar/Aerenal dmg enhs.

Now for the HE Spellsinger (didn't list spells or skills, as they're the same as the Virt):

The main drawback to SS vs. Virt is you have to drop a feat I would normally consider necessary; ideally you have Toughness, Precision, Quicken, and Combat Archery on this build, there's not enough to squeeze all of them in on top of everything else. I say it boils down to Quicken vs. Precision, though you could swap Toughness for one of them if you think have enough HPs without it.

Epic Destinies: still working these out. Some combination of Fatesinger and Shiradi Champion seems like the obvious choices. Though I'm intrigued by the notion of going Shadowdancer, for the free Evasion, extra sneak atks, and Incorporeality.

EDIT (11/19/12): original builds archived for historical purposes (or in case I screw up editing the OP).

The idea is a build which can help out the party in various ways: she buffs the party before a fight with songs & spells; she can mez mobs with her CC songs (the Virtuoso version moreso than the WC); she can serve as a backup healer with Cure wands, Heal scrolls, and (Mass) Cure spells; and she can provide decent ranged DPS from safely behind the front lines when she isn't doing the rest. Unless you're soloing, you should always let someone else draw aggro first.

My first two bardcher builds are bard 16 / ranger 2 / fighter 2. I feel this combo gives the optimal mix of bard abilities and ranged feats. Rgr is for the free feats and possibly the +1 DEX enh; ftr is for the feats, Haste Boost, and +1 STR enh. The first version is a Virtuoso; the second is a Warchanter. As you'll see, they're pretty similar in most respects: just slightly different feats & enhs.

Skills: Concentration, Perform, and UMD are the key ones and should be maxed out. After that, it's up to you. I went with Spot because I like being able to see enemies trying to sneak up on me; I've also read (but haven't confirmed) it affects your ability to see far-off (non-stealthed) enemies too. But other options include Balance, Jump, Diplomacy, or Haggle.

28-pt version: you can start with either STR 14 or CON 12; give up DPS or HPs, it's your call.

If you'd like to have better melee DPS, take ITWF & GTWF instead of SF Perform & Extend; or Power Attack & Imp Crit Slash and use 2H weapons. You'll have to take Extra Song IV to still qualify for Virtuoso, though.

Now for the Warchanter (skills & spells are identical so I omitted them for brevity's sake):

You could trade Toughness for Imp Crit Slash or a metamagic (and free up 4 enh pts), but that costs you 52 HPs on a build which is starved for them, so I wouldn't recommend it.

EDIT: it is also possible to start with the Virtuoso version, then respec into WC at high lvls; just swap SF Perform for WF Slash and take Power Attack at lvl 18.

At long last, here's my rogue 2 / ranger 2 / bard 16 Virtuoso AA. Compared to the earlier build, this one sacrifices two ftr feats, +1 STR enh, and some HPs for Evasion and trap skills.

This build is really tight on feats & enhs; so compromises have to be made. I also spaced out the rogue & ranger lvls to try to max out skill pts, but this also makes the build a late-bloomer; expect to feel particularly gimp until you hit lvl 9 or so, when your AA abilities + Manyshot finally kick in.

28-pt build: start with CON 12 - and learn to stay the heck away from aggro!

Tomes: I only listed the tomes necessary to make the build work as presented: +2 INT for extra skill pts; +2 DEX for Improved Precise Shot.

Skills: I focused on Concentration, Disable, Perform, Search, and UMD, with any extra pts going into Open Lock and Spot.

Spells: I focused on buffs first, then Cures. [Most of this build's healing will come from wands, not spells.] The only CC spell I took is Otto's Irresistible, which has no DC check and even in epics some mobs have no SR, so it's still useful.

Feats: if you wish, at lvl 6 you can take Toughness, Extend, or SF Perform (to meet Virt pre-req before bard 10 when Extra Song IV becomes available), then swap it for Precise Shot when you hit lvl 14 so you can take IPS at lvl 15. You could drop Imp Crit Ranged for a metamagic, but it hurts your ranged DPS, naturally. Likewise you could drop Toughness for something else, but that costs you 42 HPs on a low-HP build, so I wouldn't recommend it.

Enhs: after taking all the AA, Virt, song, and Toughness enhs I could, you really only have about 20 enh pts left to play with. I split them between Wand & Scroll Mastery, DEX & longbow enhs, and misc. things like Haste Boost, MotD, and MoM. But these are merely possibilities; feel free to, e.g., drop Wand Mastery for extra DEX or longbow enhs if that's what you want to focus on.

You dont have extend on your wc 16 bard 2 fighter 2 ranger. Pretty rough on a bard I would probably either drop toughness for extend or go with 14 bard 4 fighter 2 ranger. Since you are a backup healer - you might as well be a non healer with high umd for heal scrolls. Back up healers have little value in the scheme of things..

Hey what about 12 fighter 8 bard elf AA/kensai/warchanter? The songs would only be -3 off of a pure level 20 warchanter albeit without recklessness and the dps would be very solid.

I did post the 12 fighter kensai/8 bard wc/AA. http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=295723 .The kensai is in the falchion, but you could do it in the bow if you want to be more bow oriented.

I am pretty positive that smites are melee only, but divine Might and divine favor work with range. I am not sure though if there is really a good ranged pally build.

There has been some interesting high caliber ranged builds posted lately: 1. is by my guildy cleen who posted the Helves Angle Build which is 12 fighter 6 ranger 2 monk another I like was posted by Nick R. It is in the multi-class thread under the title tripple A stunnerI think original poster is craven_Vulcan or something like that. It is a 12 monk 6 ranger 2 fighter build which stuns with fists, has high ac, and is a quality ranged build.

I have a pally that I try to smite on range daily (keep forgetting). It definately does not work. Divine favor and might DO work however, making these great boons to the cleric aa variant. I think this build is more versatile than the hypothetical pally aa, and can also get full BAB through divine power.
-Thelanis toons- Alektronic (pdk pally), Bakeneko (monk), Ghyldra (druid), Hermeros (crafter), Lecker (wf wiz),
Panaceus (elemental barb), Quallus (SDK), Taigong (acrobat), Vamprix (archmage of vengeance), Vercigetorix (bard)

Yeah, my feeling was, since I couldn't take it until lvl 18 (not without delaying something important at least), Toughness was more useful than Extend at that point. If only WF Ranged counted towards WC!
go with 14 bard 4 fighter 2 ranger.
Thought about that: would give up Inspire Heroics and lvl 6 spells for an extra feat (also Haste Boost II and probably ftr Toughness II). Reasonable alternative, I just felt like it didn't fit the vibe of the character I was going for; plus the bard lvls are backloaded enough without 2 more ftr lvls delaying them further.

When I say "backup healer," I mostly mean with wands & scrolls; hence all the wand & scroll mastery enhs. Not enough feats or enh pts to spare to boost Cure spells, IMHO.

That's a very different build from what I had in mind: less party buffer, more personal DPSer. Why don't you put it together for us?

Why ranger 4 / ftr 4 and not rgr 6 / ftr 2? You net one extra feat from rgr 6 than ftr 4 plus an extra lvl 1 spell slot.

I made a spellsinger variant of your build. I'm taking mental toughness instead of SF: Perform and took 18 DEX and 10 CHA instead so I wouldn't burn any +2 tomes. I'm currently level 8 and it's so far been decently fun to play (not fast at soloing stuff but great in a party).

I'm less familiar with making healer bards. If your friend wants to be more of a healer with a bow than a singing archer, have a look at my Radiant Archer instead. I wish we knew if and when 3rd-tier bard PrEs were coming, so I could say if one should go for bard 18 on a SS healer.

na they wanted to be a bard. which i agree with is nice having maxed umd, stealth, cc, support spells, and not being relegated to being main healer only or w/e. just much more versatile really. was just wondering if there was anything that jumped out with that build that i may have looked over.

Splashing a Spellsinger hurts their CC spells: -3 Enchantment DCs and -5 Spell Pen without capstone & 3 non-bard lvls; also no Heighten or other DC boosters in your feat list. If your friend doesn't care about CC spells, then it doesn't matter; just mentioning it.

I'm also not sure whether to recommend going STR-, DEX, or CHA-based. If CC spells are out of the equation, then base CHA becomes much less important; all it grants is a negligible amount of extra SPs and a boost to CHA skills. OTOH, with rgr dilly instead of "true" Bow STR, your max ranged DPS is capped there, so there's not much point in getting carried away with STR either.

First of all - thanks to the OP for posting this. I tried your Virtuoso AA trapmonkey build (with slightly modified enhancements), and it is very fun to play. However, I'm starting to think I should go Spellsinger instead of Virtuoso. The Virtuoso playstyle really doesn't suit me, as I prefer to hang back with the casters, use ranged and only use fascinate in very specific circumstances (e.g. pillars in VoN6). I realize I won't be able to use spell-based CC effectively, I'll be taking the PrE mostly for the SP buffs. Also, I'm keeping the rogue levels instead of fighter, so I'm a bit short on feats.

I'm taking Empower Spell as the required SS feat and dropping IC: Ranged; Empower works well with bard healing spells and IC:R is the easiest feat to lose for me (I'm not willing to give up IPS).

However, now I find myself faced with a choice between either Extend or Toughness (with two racial enchancments for a total of 42 HP). Since I'm following your Virt build, I'm starting with CON 12 (and a +2 tome at level 12) which means a level 20 base HP of 188 or so without toughness. I don't plan to be doing much melee (if any), but this still seems a bit low. Also, with the upcoming nerf to Extend on offensive spells, which feat would be of more use in endgame raids/epics?

Caveat: Spellsingers are not my forte; MCed SSs even less so. This may well be extra gimped.

That said, I went back & revised my Virt AA rogue 2 / rgr 2 / bard 16 and switched it to SS by swapping IC Ranged & Toughness for Maximize & Quicken. My thinking was to act as a backup healer (Max MCMW + 175% Heal scrolls) as well as a trapmonkey & pew-pew-pewer. Needless to say, without Toughness this build winds up reaaaally squishy, so you'll have to be extra-careful with aggro management, esp. when using Manyshot + IPS. [If you're really good at avoiding aggro, you can swap Quicken for Emp Heal - or put Toughness back in.] Enh pts are also pretty tight, between SS, AA, and bard songs; I only had a few pts left over to spread around. Didn't bother listing skills, as those don't change from my original build.

Thanks for taking your time to post an updated build! I thought about it long and carefully, but eventually deviated from your suggested build for flavour. Here's my stab at it:

While I didn't supply a spell list, apart from the signature spells Otto's Sphere and Irresistable Dance (which I'm getting for flavour) it's all buffs and heals.

More INT, less STR. I decided I wanted Haggle. Still pondering if I should drop STR even further to get to 16 base CHA with tome (again, flavour, I just prefer to keep level 6 spells without equipment). Losing the +dam from STR will hurt, but given the very low attack rate on ranged builds it won't hurt nearly as much as it would for a melee. Levelups still go into STR, except last levelup to DEX to get nice, even numbers. I'll be flipping EQ depending on role, and I'd like to not be dependent on certain odd-numbered +stat items.

I decided not to take Quicken. I'm not going to pump concentrate and then get Quicken too - which doesn't do anything for scrolls. I did, however, take Extend. People really only rely on bards for one thing - buffs. Gimping buffs any more than I already do by splashing won't help. Since I'm not getting any offensive spells that I intend to actually use, the upcoming nerf might not hurt as much. Also I might use Empower instead of Maximize before my SP pool catches up.

Finally, I took a slightly insane departure in terms of enhancements. I'm dropping Wand Mastery IV and I'm getting Extra song IV and Music of Makers/the Dead. I tried to justify this to myself by arguing that Fascinate might save my bacon if I take aggro, but in reality it's just a flavour choice again. Fascinate is the one bard ability that doesn't get gimped by splashing, I might as well use it to it's full potential - even if I never actually use it.

Yeah, I know. I guess I kind of tried to retain the bard feeling in the middle of this very thinly spread build.

Oh, and I'm dropping Force Burst arrows (not a requirement for Slaying, it seems) and getting Skill Boost instead. The latter with help with traps, UMD and Haggle for a very small investment.

There are two major caveats. Firstly, no Toughness. Still, I'm no worse off than a CON 12 elf with all the enhancements (well, except that that elf can still use a tome later on). And I do have Evasion, which has to count for something towards survivability. I'll just have to see how bad I am at holding aggro before deciding. Secondly, it's horribly backloaded. Everything is delayed a few levels until level 12 or so. However, at this point I'm looking at an LR, so it's all the same to me. I wouldn't want to level up with this build, though.
