Objectives
The request was for a tank that could use axes and swords and used two handed fighting when DPS was needed. He wanted primarily fighter and suggested mixing rogue and paladin. He only had 28pt builds and free races so this is a free to play style build.

Design
I’m a fan of the splash rogue/paladin for tank builds as you get a large number of benefits and don’t give up all that much. Paladin is good for +3 AC and +8 on saves as well as early use of healing wands. Rogue nets you UMD, lock picking, evasion, and a little dex/reflex. All in all it really ups the self sufficiency. You loose out on 3 feats vs pure fighter and the third tier of defender.

These tend to have rogue at level one so you get a nice selection of skills to start wtih, then you pick up the paladin or fighter for a bit, grab the second rogue level once your combat is established so that you have evasion, then grab the second paladin level to top out saving throws, then take fighter solid until your feats and enhancements are filled out. At the upper levels you finnish out with whatever mix you like. I tend to take paladin 3 to get the +1 AC and Saves on the aura and rogue 3 to top off skills but neither is essential to the build.

For feats we start out with the obligatory toughness and dragonmark of sentinel. I really like sentinel on human tanks as you get +2 intim, access to more from enhancements, and a nice click for shield of faith which frees up a slot normally reserved for a protection item.

I go with bastard swords because the request was for some THF and the bastard sword pairs well with that on an intim tank. In raids you tend to just turtle rather than intim and swing but in most other quests there isn’t much need to block and you can take some shots between intims if you’re good at your timing.

From there I swing back and forth from tanking and DPS oriented feats to keep the character well rounded and versitile. Skills keep intimidate and support mobility skills up as well as UMD and a bit of Lock picking where there are extra points to spend.

Play
There are a lot of dimensions to characters like these so play varies quite a bit. At low level you are a kind of midleweight bruiser, not likely to lead kill counts but never a liability. You can solo well in a slow but steady kind of way, able to wand heal, fight well, and handle traps.

At mid levels the tanking starts to gel and DPS starts to pick up and the tanking steadily improves while the rogue skills atrophy into uselessness. Ultimately the primary purpose is intimidate tanking so that’s the play style you want to master.

You want to keep a set of heavy armor and a set of light armor available. The light armor is for evasion which sometimes is far more usefull than full AC. The heavy armor is for maximizing armor class. Mithral full plate is your go to armor baring epics and the like. For evasion I recommend a mithral breast plate.

UMD is very handy here but without concentration you won't be able to scroll cast in the clutch of the moment. Its more something to have in small man teams or when soloing or to scrape up softer party members after a tough fight that gets out of control. Hopefully if you do your tanking well, things will not get out of control in the first place.

Variations
You can tweak this build in a number of directions and of course it works well as a 32pt build (in which case you simply raise strength a bit).
