    Default Rogue 2 / Ranger 12 / Fighter 6 or Rogue 1-2 / Ranger 18 / Any Other 0-1?

Hi everyone! My first post on the forums! ^^

I am running my first character on DDO. I have choose a Ranger with a first level on rogue for being able to do traps and stuff. My ranger is Melee oriented, with Tempest in mind and Strenght based.

I use to solo a lot, but when I'm playing with friends or in Party, I also enjoy being as helpful as I can.

Actually I'm a level 9 Human (1 Rogue / 8 Ranger), but I'm not sure if I should go the Ranger way to level 18 or multiclass with Fighter.

If I go with The Fighter choice, I was thinking to do something like:
    - 1st Level of Rogue
    - 12 Levels of Ranger (Tempest II)
    - 6 Levels of Fighter (Kensai I)
    - 1 Level of Rogue (To try to recover all that skill points I loose for being Fighter)

I have enough Int to keep maximize Spot, Search, Disable, Open Locks, Hide and Move Silently as I´m leveling as Ranger. But if I go the Fighter way, at Lv 20, I would not have enough points to keep all the skills maximized, so I guess I would just keep Disable and Search (and maybe Open Locks) as high as I can.

The other Option would be to stick to Ranger for 18 levels and the last one would for something like Rogue (not really useful, I guess), Warrior, Barbarian (?) or Monk (If I buy the class, of course).

I´m really worried about my rogue skills becoming useless at high levels. I'm not sure if you need to be a Rogue with the right Prestige class and Enhancements to be able to do traps on really high levels (Epic and that stuff).

And I'm really worried about not being a good Melee DPS too.

My initial stats are something like this:
    Str: 16
    Dex: 14
    Con: 14
    Int: 12
    Wis: 10
    Char: 8

And I'm putting all the points on Strength, of course.

I don't really have any problem about taking a Minor Reincarnation (Not True) when I hit Lv 20 if I'm not really happy with the performance of the guy, but if I'm right this could only change three levels (no?), so I would have to stick with the 12 Ranger / 6 Warrior (or 18 Ranger) and I could only change the splash level/s.

So what do you guys suggest? Should I go the 12/6 road or just stick to at least 18 Ranger Levels? Is Tempest 3 better than all the Fighter Feats and Enhancements?

Thank you very much for any advice you can share =)

PS. Sorry about my lame English, as you can see, this is not my mother tongue v_v

I have been thinking about the build, and I think that if I put all the 6 fighter levels now, then the other 4 Ranger levels and then one Rogue level, I could keep all the important rogue skills maxed (Disable, Open Locks, Search, Spot).

I still have doubts about going Ranger 18, or Ranger 12/ Fighter 6. Going Fighter seems better for all the extra feats and the Fighter enhancements, but as I said, this is my first character, and I'm not sure how much good would be a 18 Ranger.

Are level 4 spells (and extra spell points) and Tempest 3 worthy?

I have been thinking about buying a Lesser Reincarnation now, but I think I will wait until Level 20, because I'm pretty sure, that when I reach that point I would have a better idea of what I really want.

But I still have doubts about the main question (12 or 18 Ranger levels), and the next time I level up it would be too late to change my mind. I would really appreciate any kind of advice you could give me.

    Thank you all very much

I think you have the right idea. Ranger 18 would get you more skill pts, more SPs, lvl 4 spells, and Tempest III (which is not as good as it used to be, but still a nice little bump in DPS). Ranger 12 / ftr 6 (presuming Kensai I) would get you more feats, more HPs, and higher DPS, but you'd no longer be able to max out some of your skills. The former makes a better trapmonkey and arguably is a little more versatile; the latter is better at melee. Whatever you decide, I recommend you plan the rest of your build out to make sure everything works out as you intend.

For reference, here's my Tempest trapmonkey build. Fairly similar to yours, although mine has UMD rather than stealth skills. IMHO - and the opinion of most vets - UMD is the most useful skill in the game; you shouldn't neglect it on any rogue-splashed build.

    Thanks!!!

At this point of the toon, I have enough int points to keep disable, search, spot and Open Locks maxed, even if I put the 6 levels of fighter, but the problem is that I just have to put the 6 levels all together now and two of my rogue skills will suffer a little (Spot and Search) becasuse for this 6 levels I´m putting all the points on Disable and Open Locks, both of them not ranger class skills, so Im not "losing" skill points.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure UMD is a better idea than sneak and hide, but when I started the toon, I just wanted to try the stealthy skills, and now that I don't really like it (I hate going that slow!), I regret not taking UMD (that sounds really good)

I'm pretty sure that when I hit level 20 and have played a bit twith this toon and unlocked the 32 points build, I will use a Greater Reincarnation +3, so I can max Disable, Spot, Search, Open Locks and UMD, and change some stuff like feats and Atributes.

This the current build I am playig (Im at level 9 at the moment):

Fighter kensai 1 doesn't really give a whole lot, especially towards dps. It only gives you kensai mastery 1 for +1 to-hit and damage, +2 stacking seeker. If you need all the three bonus feats, then 6ftr is ok, but if kensai 1 is the goal, I wouldn't do it. One of the feats you took as a fighter feat is power critical. You could easily drop that. Perhaps go 15rgr for the spells and extra FE and damage, and take weapon focus and weapon spec with your 4 ftr levels.
    Ghallanda: Neatoelf15wiz/1rgr, Neetoelf17wiz, NeatoManhuman13rog/6pal/1mnk, NeatoHombrehuman12ftr/6pal/2rog, Kneetoedwarf17clr, Kneedoughdrow18clr/2mnk

Minimize expectations and you'll never be disappointed

Fighter level 4? I didn't tought that... Mmmm... I could be a good idea! Let's see:

So if you just take Fighter 4, you lose:
    - 1 Feat
    - +1/+1 (Kensei)
    - +1 Str (Fighter Str II)
    - +2 to Confirm Criticals (Kensei)
    - A few HPs

    And you gain:
    - Level 4 Spells? (I cannot find this on the DDO Compendium!)
    - 1 Favored Enemy (And +1? +2? to damage against them)
    - Spell Points
    - Skill Points

Are level 4 spells really useful? Specially having in mind that when I unlock 32 points builds, I'm going to use a Greater Reincarnation and max UMD and I could probably use wands and/or scrolls (I don really know what kind of stuff could I use, so maybe I'm saying something stupid).

Changing the subject: I tought Power critical should work well with Kopesh. I haven't played a high level toon yet, so maybe I get the wrong idea...

And I have one "free" feat (I did put toughness on my last feat because I was not really sure what feat to put. Maybe Maximize Spell for a better healing in extreme necessity, I don't know).

By the way, if (when) I Reincarnate, if I eat any Tome at level 20, should I be able to use the modified stats redoing my toon? +2 Int at level 7 for skill points, better dex for some feats... You know.

Thank very much for your answers and advice, it's really helpful!

Unless you really need the skill pts, I think I would prefer rogue 1 / rgr 12 / ftr 7: you get everything you list for ftr 6 / Kensai I plus Toughness III & Haste Boost III. Getting an extra FE is nice, but I'd rather boost my dmg against everything; and the lvl 4 rgr spells are pretty blah, IMHO.

I think I'm more confident with the Fighter 6/7 approach. The main focus of the toon is (or should be) DPS and rogue skills. I'm pretty sure than the spells are nice and fun, but it really feels like a big sacrifice to lose +1 Str and Kensai.

I know, +1/+1 it's not that much, but every point counts and in this case with the +1 on Str, we are probably talking about +2/+2.

Thank you all very much for your advice!
