    Default Question about PnP races

    Are there any races in the Eberron setting that have +2 starting racial stats to WIS- i.e. can start at a 20 WIS?

    Thanks.

    Aasimar - the Celestially-Planetouched counterparts to Tieflings.

    * +2 Wisdom, +2 Charisma.
    * Outsider (Native)
    * Medium size.
    * An aasimar’s base land speed is 30 feet.
    * Darkvision: Aasimars can see in the dark up to 60 feet.
    * Weapon and Armor Proficiency: An aasimar is automatically proficient with all simple and martial weapons, light and medium armor, and shields.
    * Resistance to acid 5, cold 5, and electricity 5.
    * Spell-Like Ability: 1/day—daylight. Caster level equals the aasimar’s class levels.
    * +2 racial bonus on Spot and Listen checks.
    * Automatic Languages: Common, Celestial. Bonus Languages: Draconic, Dwarven, Elven, Gnome, Halfling, Sylvan.
    * Favored Class: Paladin.
    * Level Adjustment: +1.
    If implemented in DDO would probably be something like Drow where 32 point build is not available unless True Reincarnate.

    I'm not sure about Eberron specific stuff, but if Tieflings are implemented as player characters I would expect Aasimar to be in the same update.

    Dreamsight (?) Shifter is the classic Eberron-canonical +WIS race. Initially it's only WIS while shifting, but pretty much all shifters eventually tag the "keep trait while not shifted" capability if they can.

    Moonspeaker is an awesome PrC for WIS/Caster shifters ...

    Not sure if you're Eberron only - I kinda made that assumption.

    Just about any other can fit ... and that leaves open things like Dream Dwarves and other considered-cheaty 0 LA races.

    The creator of Eberron, Keith Baker, has been quoted as saying that ALL things D&D have their place in Eberron. As such, any +WIS race can be justified as long as you can fluff it.

    Default Don't do it.

    According to the reformed munchkins (so they say) on the order of the stick forums, almost all classes that have a stat bonus that would help a caster have a level adjustment. It is almost certain that whatever you gain in having that bonus will be less than the benefit from that level*. The exception is the dreaded anthropomorphic bat (-4 STR, -2 DEX, +6 WIS, -2 CHA) from savage species. Don't go there.

    *If you do bring a bat, the DM should pull out the dreaded "adult black dragon with a single level of sorcerer". Consult the order of the stick (and V in particular) as to why this is a potent combination.

    (This is a 3.x question, right?)

    If you haven't checked out the D20 optimization forums on the wizard's boards or on brilliantgameologists, you should.

    The Optimization Library (google should find it) or Surreal's thread of handy links has plenty that can help you figure out what you need.

    One of the better sources for this kind of info can be the CrystalKeep indices. Here's the race one:

    Order of the Stick is not a good source for comparing power level. Giant in the Playground doesn't have as many knowledgeable CharOp people as Brilliant Gameologists.

    Default order of the stick

    Recommended for the comics, can't argue about the board's power gamers.

    As far as 3.5 goes, the DM still has to taylor the game to meet how the players are going to play it (or at least tell the players how much power to build the characters for). While this was blindingly obvious in AD&D, the fact that there exist some sublimely broken builds shows that you can't even trust the 3.x rules. The DM must never abdicate the rule of his domain (see Gabe of penny arcade).

    As far as the black dragon bit, I'd hate to include a spoiler for anyone who hasn't read the strips.
