Default Theletha, the Singing Elven Ranger

Disclaimer: this is not a finished post, things will get changed and updated regularly while I am playing this as my main.

    Uploaded with ImageShack.us

    Picture Taken on 12/21/2010

I am still missing the following:

    +45 Shroud HP*
    +10 Argo Favor**
    +10 Greater False Life
    +20 Exceptional Con
+20 Minos Legens (I'm still wearing Wrath of Sora Kel)
    +40 Yugo Pots
    ------------------
145 HP missing. Still a lot of work.

    Notes:

    * I am having problems slotting the 45 HP shroud item, I put my con/opp cha/sp GS on my goggles slot and my cloak slot is currently occupied by Bard's Cloak/Mabar Cloak. Granted I can build an epic Gem/Glove combo set to free up my necklace for a torc while retaining the Bracer's of the glacier. I might drop the Bracers of the Glacier for the Min II 45 HP shroud item.

** I am still lazy to even try putting an LFM to do Reaver's Refuge Quests on Elite. I might do so after I complete my Con/Opp goggles to tier III.

    -----------------------------------

    I am still missing

+1 weapon enhancement main hand/+1 off hand*
    +1 Exceptional Str
    +1 +2 Strength Tome
    +1 Yugo Pots
    +1 18 Str True Reincarnation
+1 Blessing of the three Dragons (I don't usually use airship buffs unless I'm doing epics)
+2 Training Dummy (except on epics)
+1 Str Shrine (I only did accept to use a higher level airship once for fun but I don't like airship buffs)
    ----------------
+9 Hit missing; problematic w/o Mass Hold but decent in low-end epics

    * I might end up making a Min II scimitar w/ non Damage Tiers just for the DR breaking and Lit II scimitars for Epic Bosses

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

    Current UMD

    23 Ranks
    3 Cha
    2 Cha Item (tier II)
    4 Greater Heroism
    1 Focusing Chant
    4 Spellsinger PrE
    ---------------------
    37 UMD

    Potential non switching UMD

    3 Cha Item (tier III)
    1 Cha Tome
    1 Exceptional Cha
1 Cha Shrine (I don't use airship buffs)
    ---------------------
    43 UMD

So much Work to do. I'm so Gimp!

    ------------------------------------------------

This bard multiclass, themed “man-shots and curved blades”, is built with the intention of capitalizing the Elf enhancements and PrE, the Arcane Archer, while contributing to the group effort as a DPS support character as a Spellsinger Bard through Songs, Spot Heal and Stealth. This is not a range + kite build. This is a melee DPS that treats Manyshot as a single target burst DPS and ranged combat in general as additional versatility in melee-hostile environment

    What this build provides are:

    1. Bard Package

    - Spellsinger II, regenerating up to 280 SP in 3:20 minutes for a maximum of 12 songs per rest. That's 3360 potential SP for you or your group to use!
    - up 35 ranks of UMD pre-shroud, and up to 44 ranks in UMD post shroud and can go higher. Love it, use it!
    - Caster's Friend in Epics: +1 Spell DC, +1 Spell Penetration and 10% morale Discount for sorcs/wizards in you group to land Mass Holds and other CC's in Epics more consistently! Keep their mana bar up and running!
    - High SP pool: Keep the melee and squishees buffed and running with perma displace/haste! Bonus points if wizard spams haste for more displacing action!~

    2. Ranger Package

    - Archery Set: Your minimum "must-have" feats for archery free!
    - Two Weapon Fighting Feats: Tired of pew pew? You get two of the three feats for free!
    - Extended Ram's Might and Jump Package: DPS and combat mobility? Gimptastic!~
    - Sprint Boost: Your walking days are over.
    - Favored Enemies: Undead and Evil Outsiders: Our DPS ticket to the end-game.

    3. Elf Package

    - Elven Arcane Archer PrE
    - Scimitar/Bow Enhancements(more on this below)

    4. Fighter Package

    - Haste Boost: Haste + Haste Boost + Manyshot + Abbot quiver = Win
    - More HP is better
    - More Feats is better than none

    5. General Package

    - Stealth
    - Solo Friendly
    - Dynamic Gameplay
    - Tactics Oriented Playstyle

    What this build lacks are:

    - No Evasion
    - +4 hit/+4 damage Bard Songs only.
    - Has only 12 songs to play around with.
    - No AC song
    - No Evasion

    How to Play

The biggest challenge on playing and tweaking this build is to get a meaningful +hit. I am aiming for 50 hit self buffed. With two different sources of burst damage (Manyshot and TWF) your DPS will be decent but on epics the lack of + hit will murder your DPS especially with lower than usual song bonuses.

Though on the upside, a +4/+4 song on lower-end epics such as Red Fens is more than enough for straight melees since epics is usually a mass-hold a-lot contest of casters and inflated HP mobs so this build is doing fine on epics overall.

The most simple solution you can do without farming anything is to wield a light weapon off-hand instead of another Scimitar. A Kukri is your best choice. This automatically gives your +2 hit.

The "grind" solution is to get a competence bonus to +hit, get a Tharne's Goggle, do some epics and get Raven's Eye Set and/or just epic you spectrals (but its not an option for me).

    Weapon Tips

Body Feeder Scimitar / Seeker Scimitar <--- my personal preference and casual playing/solo

Scimitar / Kukri for general all purpose combat.

Warhammer / Light Hammer for undead.

Heavy pick / Light Pick on epics

Dual Handaxes as vorpal weapons. This is a requirement. First it is cheap, second it has x3 crit multiplier and third its a light weapon so you can roll a confirm hit to vorpal better on both hands.

Rapiers / Short Swords as Banishers

Heavy Mace / Light Mace as Smiters. It is cheaper.

    Mobility and Survivability

Learn to Flank correctly to get +hit bonuses to compensate the lack of songs to boost your DPS.

Learn to Position yourself as close as possible whenever you decide to manyshot with a bow so that once manyshot has ended there is no time wasted in between switching weapons and diving into melee.

When there are too many mobs in front of the target melee. We are not a ranger.

    When you cannot melee, range.

Emphasis on the following: Concealment bonuses such as displacement, static DR (axeblock, ironskin chant) and active DR (stoneskin) when buffing defenses.

Emphasis on the following: HP +hit +saves when deciding w/c gear to replace and look out for.

    Last Thoughts

The best way to maximize this build in action is to learn how to position yourself in combat to make the most out of your ranged/melee combat. Spreadsheets wont help you with this, but practice will and experience learning the limitations and pushing the limits of this build.

The Most Important Never Ever Never Forget Rule

Kite only when necessary, Learn when to put away the bow and last, aim for the casters first, then archers then melee.

Greetings AltheaSteelrain (and to the wider Bardic society). First time post here so please bear with me.

In my few the months playing DDO - I have enjoyed a fun and motivating dwarven variant of LeslieWest's Genghis Khan - lvl 10/2/2 so far.

I feel fortunate to be in a supportive Dwarven Guild (sorry boss - can't plug it here anymore than that).

Anyways I have followed you postings re your Mongolian Archer and my main point is:

Do u see foresee a dwarven variant of your build. Obviously the elven A/A is not applicable but what say fleshing out the third package in your build with axe specs (sort of a Dwarven Thrower using a dwarven thrower etc).

Anyways - really appreciate all the wonderful info, discussions, critique, and builds that yourself (and others) contribute so that this bardic noobie can enjoy the game and establish a credible role within the guild.

"Nos Partum Detrimentum" -("We build dammage")
The problem with Arcane Archer PrE is that either you go as an elf so you save levels for other build options, or just go ranger instead. Elf frees up the ranger restriction so I can keep all AA enhancements and be a Scimmie Swinging singign bard at the same time

The Axesinger is your best bet to maximize the use of the dwarven axe, and I also like this build template simply because like Leslie's Genghis is very customizable depending on your preference.

But if you really like to manyshot a bow and be a dwarf at the same time, it is still a solid choice, the only problem lies with compensating for the +hit bonuses the elf has over a dwarf and tweaking the said damage output to be at par and efficient with the Elf AA PrE (imbue arrows)..

Fun fun... *toys with the char planner*

    anyways, here yah go!

This is an armchair build concept, meaning, I haven't tried this nor experiencing playing with one. First off, I made this one as a 32 pt. build, since I don't think posting a 12 con dwarf is a bad idea in the forums. But if we analyze, the 12 con loses only 40 hp on level 20, so for me it translates into a more careful play style if you go for the 28 pt. dwarf version of this build that only has 12 con . Theoretically the Viscous property Imbue of the Barbarian Frenzied Berserker I PrE should apply to ranged weapons, if it doesn't happen you still have manyshot that you treat as a 20 second DPS burst with (WARNING: MIN-MAX NEWBIE COMMENT HERE) Lightning II Greensteel bow or Tier II double positive Bow against Laliat, in Against the Demon Queen Raid

Of course, the dwarf variant is still a tank and spank build, however it is hard to fit in the manyshot concept hence I had to either bump fighter levels but lose the barbarian bonus imbue weapons or drop fighter but will lose alot of feat slots to get manyshot. I don't think Two Handing an axe is better on this build, since you are already getting a higher dex than Genghis, then why not dual wield?

You will eventually get a stunning weapon off-hand, since this build can sport 41 Stunning Blow DC with generic items only, meaning you will stun and hurt. I lost the Imp. Crit: Slashing for our general hack and slash DPS, but you will regain it eventually if you get Min II dwarven Axe or just stick with the idea of stunning every mob to get crit damage on your axe all the time for lets say... 3 seconds? :P

This build also lost haste boost, but then I figure in my experience that I dotn use haste boosts unless the boss drops down to 10%, i believe that the 15 second speed burst is redundant if every other 2 minutes you get manyshot and swing hard and solid with dwarven axes on cooldown. Plus Haste Boosts for me work better if you have a high critical profile on your weapon, the 15 second speed burst is more of the "luck of a roll swing a crit" for me, hence I dropped it and got a little more consistency for this build

On the bard side I initially aimed for 12 bard for warchanter II, but then the feat starvation kicked in and I was forced to return to my old policy of "deep-splashing" bards with at least a minimum level of 8, to qualify for the Imp. Song feat. So this "bard" will be mostly shunned for its GIMP layout during PUGs. Expect that.

Although if you are in Thelanis, you can always join... my army... of the dead... err.. party... er right.. right... Hmm must been those cookies... Anyways, PUGs in Thelanis are usuall open minded and although I did encounter a lot of anti non rogue splash sentiments, it is generally tolerable once you build your reputation in-game as a decent slot for parties/raids as DPS.

As a sideplus, if you want to screw this build even more (no offense intended) you can drop extend spell feat and get Brutal Throw Feat so you can unleash the fury of a 50 or more damage before other damage bonuses Greensteel Throwing axe (I got a GS throwing Axe on my Genghis Elf, and I deal 44 damage per throw before all other damage buffs) and hit them consistently on a bad roll. For even more fun, make a Lightning II Throwing Hammer and scream I AM THE GOD OF THUNDER!! for more flavor and roleplaying fun fun! XD

Overall, let me know what you think of this build

Have fun, and as a last advice:

If they make fun of you laugh with them and carry on; The cycle of hatred must end.

    Your bard seems fun!

Nothing serious here... felt like rolling the seemingly impossible tonight, a ranged bard! The levels are out of order. Just a (very) quick mockup.

Focus is on dex for to-hit. Higher CHA for many reasons. Very powerful bard songs. Can be adapted for more dps, more heal, etc...

I'd start 1 level ranger, 6 bard, 5 levels ranger, 8 levels bard. I'm surprised that I've found some synergies here.

    What do you think?

Short Answer: I need the extra feats from fighter 2 but a 14/6 Warchanter split is better overall especially in raids and epics (+hit!!!~) but will have to sacrifice Extend, PS and IPS to get GTWF and Imp Crit:ranged/melee depending on your preference.

To be honest, my current build is a result of trial and error, nothing more, fitting in the playstyles that I enjoy the most after playing and rerolling many great bard builds.

Long and Detailed Answer: (WALL OF TEXT)

Actually a 14/6 Warchanter is what I originally planned.

One day, I woke up and decided to be a bard archer. I wanted to pew pew and melee well. *opens character planner*

    Tada~ A 14/6 warchanter Bardcher was born!

After playing it up to level 16 as a warchanter I rerolled out of no apparent reason but boredom. It didn't felt right for my "style".

Hence I rerolled into this character split.

While a 14/6 is a better party support build for an archer compared with mine (especially going warchanter) I considered the feat selection to be too tight since originally I planned to be either full ranged or full melee. But my gimp senses wanted both so I decided to scratch 2 bard levels to get 2 fighter for the bonus feats.

The 2 fighter made all the difference. First, a 14 bard/6ranger split only has 7 feats to play around with. 5 of which are the very important "DPS" feats for ranger and AA PrE requirements. So it leaves me with just either dropping extend for maximize (to qualify for spellsinger PrE) and of course getting the toughness feat as mandatory.

While this is an acceptable loss since you get maximum ranged combat efficiency w/ IPS, the loss of Imp: Crit Ranged among the feats will drop DPS horribly. Update 8 promotes vorpal strikes with a bow though so I would not think it would make the ranged DPS suffer badly without this feat.

However, I like freedom with my weapons. A 14/6 split would be stuck being a sub-bar TWF lacking GTWF and imp crit: melee or just go THF all the way when engaging in melee. Add with this the fact that there is no room for Power Attack Feat. I would also be stuck using Min II's which is not bad but its just not my style and I prefer character over min/max

Hence the choice of dropping 2 more bard levels for two fighter levels to get power attack and GTWF.

Now with a little more freedom in feat selection, I then realized that during my old warhanter days IPS wasn't really paying for itself, especially since at that time I was reading the forum posts that were criticizing ranged combat. I did not want to box my bard into the "omg not another gimp archer" mentality. Fortunately I'm a Genghis Bard learner, and know the value of a Melee Bard. Which is why I dropped PS and IPS in favor of getting both Imp Crit Feats and net another free feat to get extend spell feat.

So with that trade-off I now have a 12 bard splash that has "free" feats slots to play around with to toy with any of the 3 bard PrEs.

I chose spellsinger II because of the free SP regen and UMD.

Since I lack the better songs, I had to maximize the other tools in my arsenal to get the job done. UMD and stealth are good soloist synergies especially when you are farming for Greensteel Blanks. I practically XP ransacked the vale quests solo except Running W/ the Devils (I am too gimp for the end fight at that time >.<) to get plat to buy/beg/borrow/steal the following:

a Metalline Scimitar of Pure good
a Seeker 10 Kukri of Pure Good (working on a silver version)
    2 Vorpal Handaxes
    Rocksplitter
    Seeker 10 light Pick

The free SP regen coupled w/ Maximize Spell allowed me to Solo heal a lot of 6-man content, especially SoS on norm and hard. The DC and Caster Level songs are just nice bonuses especially on PUG groups w/ a lousy caster. My huge SP pool and very good players from my guild practically smells "we don't need just a healbot". This is how I completed my Dragontouched Armor w/ +5 Resistance, Healing Amp 20% and Earthen Guard. The last tier will be replaced by a Destruction Rune on standby after I completed my GS picks.

The Epic Mabar Cloak doubled my mana efficiency and survival rate.

Then I proceeded to ransack the New Palace quests to get the Wrath of Sora Kel Set to close in the gap w/ the Enhancement Starved concept and Lousy DPS with a nice bonus of making my CCW spell powerful before I started doing Shroud Runs to make my Lit II bow, Lit II scimitar, and currently making two Earthgrab Picks one heavy one light and probably a Con/Opp acessory in order.

This Set is just temporary up until I can craft a few more epic gear from the Red Fens to free up gear slots for more GS guards

I am also Shortmanning Claw of Vulkoor with a guildie w/ a woo woo stick (dreamspitter) and I proceeding to stealth all the way for a chance to make my Epic Claw Set.

Also aside from the lack of Songs I find no problems landing fascinate on Epics which is gravy.

So all in all, this is how it came to be a 12/6/2 split. No calculators, just trial and error, experience and of course learning from people like you in the forums what makes a bard great and not great.

So really I don't see why my build is gimped, actually I am taking the "gimp" word as a compliment.

So whenever I read a comment such as the above troll asking me to reroll I jsut smile and do the formal "go back to ye hole" replies because clearly they are missing the point.

This build is the result of playing DDO,me enjoying the game and being responsible for other people's time and fun.

A build is useless without a great player, any pro can take a toon out of the Gimp Roller and make it the best it can be. I am aiming for this title (for teh Epeens!)

Thanks for visiting my build thread leslie its such an honor

Reroll now; that build will never make it to 20.

    ;-)

The Rocksplitter w/ Maiming is going to be a very popular little weapon.

    Did you look at 14 bard / 4 fighter / 2 ranger?
Ghallanda - now with fewer alts and more ghostbane

O C'mon, I'm already at 20 and can TR anytime I want to

I already played the many bard splits that are rangerish but it doesn't play right for me except this split.

and I took a picture of the Rocksplitter with intention of making the pic "gimpy as possible". I was also doing a State of my +Hit address before I had the epiphany of posting a latest build in progress pic. That picture was before I decided to use a light weapon on the off-hand to get more +hit so I can turn power attack in Epic Red Fens consistently Naturally of course with a Scimitar my +hit is higher.

And I'm still using the Rocksplitter on Epics up until I can make my first Triple Earth Pick and reslot A destruction Rune on my DT. MY off hand is now of course the proper Seeker 10 light pick of Maiming

I shall update that picture once I complete my Triple Earth Picks and loot a spare +2 Str tome so I can post a much "nicer" picture.

Should I perhaps put something to boost e-peens instead? :P

Really, its just my preference and playstyle

I'm still planning on keeping a set of dual-upgraded-rocksplitters if I've got seeker somewhere else just for the occasions when a wizard is mass holding and earthgrab on a pick isn't as necessary.

True. I am actually torn between getting Earthgrab picks and/or keep the rocksplitter/seeker combo to save larges. However I figure since I mostly PUG epics, the additional earthgrab is nice and invaluable as backup.

Though yeah, that too; I am actually looking forward to Update 8 and a christmas discount so I can buy the pack much cheaper. :P
