    Default zen arcane archer

    I was thinking about building a zen arcane archer, and came up with this one. Basically I thought of using high wis to come up with an ranged capable cleric, using imbue arrows to play with trash mobs since the dps will most certainly be far too low. I am not happy with the result though, I have the sense it will be boring to lvl this guy, maybe anyone have any idea of how to improve it? note this is just a oddball favor build, and I know it is far sub optimal.....

    1. You're a feat short. Arcane Archer requires Weapon Focus: Ranged.

    2. If you're taking 1 level of Wizard, you might as well take 2 for Improved Maximize.

    3. No Bow Strength really hurts. Even with an 8 starting Strength, you'll still have +3 damage from tomes/enhancement bonus alone.

    4. Charisma. You can have up to Divine Might III in a build that regenerates turn attempts every 2 minutes - that's +6 damage/shot you don't get due to low Charisma.

    5. Zen Archery & Wisdom. One of the reasons Zen Archery is so rarely taken as a feat is that the maximum achievable Wisdom for an Elf is lower than the maximum achievable Dexterity. Now, if you so happen to have a build where Wisdom has a much higher payoff than Dexterity, then it might make sense. But your build really doesn't get that sort of payoff from Wisdom since you don't have any of the rest of the supporting material necessarily to be an effective offensive caster.

    Ultimately you're burning a little under 20% of your starting stat points to get +1 Will save, a tiny bit of SP and +1 save DCs. But without Heighten/Spell Focus, that +1 save DCs isn't going to be all that meaningful since you won't be depending on your offensive casting.

    6. 17 Cleric. Almost any decent build for this purpose is going to take no more than 17 levels of Cleric since that's the point you hit level 9 spells. Additional Cleric levels before 20 don't actually gain you that much. So I'd start with the assumption you have 3 multi-class levels to play with.

    7. No Spot. Yes, Spot is a "useless skill". Except if you're an archer. Since you will often be engaging targets at the limits of your range, you actually need to see those targets. Almost any ranged build wants to invest in Spot, even though they may not be able to use it for its conventional purpose (locating traps).

    8. No Quicken. Your primary support role is as a healer, and this tends to mean that Quicken is more important than any other metamagic feat aside from Empower Healing.

    Some basic builds you might work from:
    "High AC Archer"
    Classes: 17 Cleric/2 Monk/1 Wizard
    Stats: 12/16+3/12/12/14/14+2
    Feats: Toughness*, WF: Ranged, PBS, Rapid Shot, Manyshot, Empower Healing, Combat Expertise*, Bow Strength, Quicken Spell*, Extend Spell.

    "Support Archer"
    Classes: 17 Cleric/2 Ranger/1 Wizard
    Stats: 14/16+3/12/10/14/14+2.
    Feats: Toughness, WF: Ranged, PBS, Rapid Shot*, Manyshot, Empower Healing, Bow Strength*, Extend Spell, Quicken Spell*, Maximize Spell.

    "Zen Archer"
    Classes: 17 Cleric/2 Fighter/1 Wizard
    Stats: 8/16/12/8/16+5/16. This gives you all the qualifying stats you need and only -2 Wisdom from your original design.
    Feats: Toughness*, WF: Ranged*, PBS, Rapid Shot, Manyshot, Empower Healing, Zen Archery, Bow Strength, Extend Spell*, Quicken Spell.
